Lyon is just the kind of guy not to bring in young blokes; I predict he will be gone by 2025 if he doesn’t harass any female employees or it could be earlier.
A stupid post....

The fact he is the kind of guy not to bring in young blokes is a myth.

Freos 2013 grand final side had Cam Sutcliffe and Lachie Neale. Both of those blokes came from the 2011 AFL draft.

As for freos Rebuild from 2016-19....

Go look at freos drafting from 2016-19 drafts....

2016: Griffin Logue, Sean Darcy, Brennan Cox, Luke Ryan.

2017: Andrew Brayshaw, Adam Cerra, Hugh Dixon, Mitch Crowden, Lloyd Meek, Sam Switkowski, Sam Jones and Bailey Banfield

2018: Sam Sturt, Luke Valente, Lachie Schulz, Brett Bewley

2019: Hayden Young, Caleb Serong, Liam Henry, Michael Frederick. Lyon was sacked by late 2019. So that draft year doesnt count.

If Ross Lyon is gone at the saints by 2025, so be it.

So you think 2nd last to a premiership in 2 years isn't a quick turnaround?

What's your definition?
I suppose if you just isolate those two years it looks like a quick turn around but it was 10 years in the making.

It does show though that that things can turn very quickly.

Melbourne is probably the only premiers recently that bottomed out for years prior to winning the flag.

Even the Dogs only finished bottom 4 once in between their prelims and their flag

Bucks reckons he's spent a bit of time with Lyon recently.

Not sure he'll be invited around for drinks again anytime soon.

He was brought on with a long term focus, so it's hardly controversial to suggest that we're not going to do much this year, especially with our injury list.

I'm not sure we'll finish bottom 4 but I doubt you'll see many people complaining if we did.

Bottom 4 would probably be the reality check we need regarding list management and the potential to trade out some middling players.

You were garbage for almost 10 years from ~2007 including bottoming out twice (08-09 and 12-14).

You were finally building from 2016. One shit year in 2019 doesn’t mean that’s where you turned it around.

If we are talking about the demons?

Yes they finished 17th in 2019 and got a Flag in 2021.....

But lets not forget this, Demons didnt play finals from 2007-2017....

But looking at the Demons very closely. the true turnaround came in in 2014-6 when Paul Roos was the demons coach.

17th in 2014 with 4 wins.

13th in 2015 with 7 wins. that included a win vs the cats in Geelong.

11th in 2016 with 10 wins.

9th in 2017 with 12 wins... You could make an argument that demons could of got 8th spot and finals. lost one close game too many.

5th with 14 wins in 2018. Made finals and won 2 finals vs Cats and hawks,

17th wth 5 wins in 2019. crippled with injury.

9th with 9 wins and 8 losses. Corona virus stuff up part of the season. Like the 2017 season, finished 9th and lost one close game too many to miss out on finals.

1st with 17 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw. Won the qualifying final in Adelaide oval vs Brisbane. Won the prelim final vs the cats in Perth, won the grand final in Perth vs the bulldogs.

Don't know if depth is essential. Sometimes you just need to have a gun 22 and hope you have luck with injuries. Depth won't help if you lose any of your stars.

Disagree. Maybe in a grand final? Even then the 2018 Eagles were missing Naitanui, Sheppard and Gaff from their side - Schofield and Vardy in particular as replacements earned their stripes in the GF.

But more so - you need them to cover for a season. Geelongs depth, next-man-up and role covering ability made them look very fresh come September

Strong argument that the Tigers couldnt possibly have won with an injury to Dusty but also all year they had guys roll up and play a role (Pickett, Graham, Townsend).

Think you need a bit of both TBH, no team has ever won a flag without a bit of luck.

Well, you would know garbage so I'll definitely listen to you

Eagles got away with it in 2018 because Collingwood were missing players too. Elliott, Moore, Lyndon Dunn and Treloar wasn't 100% after coming back from the double hammy injury. We went into the GF with no recognised tall defenders.

Highly debatable.
Well thats your opinion....

Ross Lyon gets crapped on for not getting a flag.

Clarkson at the hawks had one of the best assembled teams in the AFL era and an excellent strengh and conditioning division.

I will always Savour freos 2012-15 finals run under Ross Lyon.

Just having a look through the thread. There is some good discussion and a few good posters with some great points. Then we have the obvious children that want to throw the boots in.

There seems to be a bit of a myth amongst some AFL fans that you have to completely bottom out to build a list which just isn't true.

Have a look at Port and North for example. One has been around the mark while the other a rabble for years.

Port have managed to build a very impressive young core in that time and North don't seem to have a hell of a lot to show for it considering.

As a Saints fan I'm quite happy with how we've recruited over the last couple of years. There's a good core of kids coming through now.

We probably need another good year of drafting before getting aggressive on the trade/free agency table.

Not sure there's such thing as no man's land if you are smart enough with your recruiting though.

Remain competitive and you'll have a group of players willing to stick together and improve.

Become a rabble and all of a sudden you need to be excellent off the field to keep your players together and motivated.
Not being from the state its hard to know, but i read/heard somewhere that the Saints want to in some way replicate the Cats by attracting players from bayside or peninsula area as you're the only club in the area.

Sounds like a good plan, but is it reasonable to think players from those areas would want to play at the Saints or rather, is that far to go if you live in those areas and played for another Vic club - obviously not Geelong? Also you often here alot of the Falcons boys support Geelong and want to play there, would it be the same for those players supporting Saints in and around bayside and peninsula or is Geelong area more unique?

Pretty long winded question on my part lol

Agree, I think it’s a good idea but we are going to struggle to have a huge amount of success out of it due to having other clubs not near as far away as they are for Geelong.

I doubt we have the same support around the bayside area as Geelong have down there too. Most of those guys coming through Sandy Dragons seem to have a wide range of teams they support.
