RBT for 3years & then hand the reigns to Lenny.
Why else would you give up the comforts of farm life where you grew up for the hustle & bustle of Melbourne?

"St Kilda really means a lot to me so to be coming home feels really right. It feels good to be back in the colours and representing the club again," Hayes said in a club statement on Thursday.

"Being involved in grassroots footy over the past year really reaffirmed my love for the game and it coincided with an opportunity that felt too good to pass up”

I wonder if we could see a Dal Santo style resurgence from Hunter Clark under a coach like Ross?

I seem to remember Nick being labelled lazy on-field, not working hard enough off-field, and not fulfilling his potential early in his career.

…either that or he will fold like a cheap suit.

And then he got traded to …… North Melbourne 🫢

untried coaches are all the rage right now after Voss and McRae, everyone wants one. We’ve tried that with our last 3 appointments and there isn’t a whole lot of amazing experienced candidates out there.

Club has its work cut out big time!
Voss coached Brisbane 10+ years ago. He was not untried.

Could a succession plan not be worked out down the line? If it’s not announced straight away as part of his hiring doesn’t mean it needs to be discounted out of hand. I doubt Lyon would be back on board for a 2 or 3 year succession. It would be because he has unfinished business of winning a flag. Don’t think he’s wired that way.
It could be but if there's nothing in place in 2 years to takeover from him then I think we are making a big mistake

Whilst I think it is really important to have a DNA throughout the club, I'm not so sure that being a St Kilda person involves the same amount of pride as being a Geelong person or a Richmond person or an Essendon person during their glory years.

Cripps may not remember his is time at the club with any degree of fondness and may view it as a dark period in his life considering how often he was injured as a player.

I hope not, but I fear we're overstating this factor. While other clubs can bring ex players back on the premise of bringing pride and glory back to their grand old club, we haven't had much of that so there's no question of our boys "bringing back" anything, although I will concede at least in the case of Hayes and Lyon they can bring back the fearsome non-negotiable high standard they were involved in even if it didn't bring them any prizes.

The Dogs won the 2016 premiership after bringing back their favourite sons.

Haven’t read through so could be an old message but got this yesterday.

Lyon signed up. Done ✅ deal. 5 years deal. At a million a year.
Fox son is funding.
Riewoldt going onto board
I hope you are right.

But how does fox fund our soft cap?

Unless you are saying Ross takes less from the club over 5 years?

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I'm not sure why everyone is so keen on having "st kilda people" bought back. It gives a bit of a sugar hit to the supporters, but we don't seriously believe they'll work harder or do a better job because they played for us, right??

If we're really looking to change the long- standing mentality and culture of mediocrity, history clearly suggests the st kilda people aren't best suited to facilitate that.

If we make progress with this endeavour, I'd think an appointment like Enright's last year will prove to be more beneficial than getting Lenny this year, seeing as though he was entrenched in the most successful setup in the comp for the last 20 years.

Cripps seems like a good operator, but we shouldn't be all in on him just because he played for us, we should target the best around and go from there. And we might not get Stephen Wells, but we can ask, and maybe there's a key person from his team we can pry out who would do just as good a job instead.

He is 56 in a few weeks.

Not 106.

If he thinks he can do it and wants to do it for 5 + years go for it.

AT WORST, The next 2 are pretty much free throws.

It’s the 3rd years results that will be important.

It depends on the St Kilda people.

What exactly makes Lyon the best man for the job? I am a very analytical person so even though I have a dislike of the man based on past event If he is actually the best person for the job so be it.
Reading past article about him from players like Roo one main takeaway which many of us already know is that he has a tough love no apologies attitude approach to coaching but is this still an appropriate way to push/motivate players of today? Is a break them down to make them better a realistic approach anymore? There will always be the type A personalities that will thrive under this style but are the new generation of players raised to this way of coaching.
Posters have mentioned his defensive style of coaching as a plus but from what I have seen of the better teams it is their ability to continually move the ball forward.
Collingwoods run and gun style to Geelongs style of as one person moves the ball forward another fills their spot regardless of position.
The main thing I want to see from whoever we get is the establishment of an ideal. Play for each other, Play for the supporters, get the best out of yourselves because you have a limited time to achieve success so don't waste it. Whatever it is have something the players buy into.
I wasn't sure what I thought when reading about how McRae was upset about players laying on the ground after their loss. But its a mentality of a culture he is trying to create which I applaud.
Whatever we decide I hope we do our due diligence as we don't need to rush this for fear of losing out on someone.

Not what I get from what past players say about him. He's a friend and father figure but he's got a really clear communication style. It actually doesn't come across as cruel or tough. More direct.

You hear him in the media doing analysis, he says stuff that is very insightful but he delivers it quite monotonous and matter of fact. Even when others get excited and try to make drama he stays quite flat and calm and he sounds authoritative. He's also quite dry humoured and low key funny.

I hink a lot of players liked that he gives extremely clear instruction and roles are defined and easy to understand. There were rumour of players "confused" last year. That's one thing you never hear one of his ex players say about Ross. Like Horse, he seems to be very good at defining what players roles are and having them learn that inside out and have other able to walk in behind them and copy that role.

The structural and communication stuff I think will transcend eras. The game day strategy is going to be his make or break. Part of what made him a great coach was that he innovated and was doing something different. Now his different is the norm and guys going back to free flowing pre Roos/Lyon era game styles are breaking those zones open a bit easier, like the Richmonds break the zones down through chaotic ball movement that is too quick for the zones to restructure before the ball is in their area.

I heard 3 years and no figure put on it. It seems to be a lot for a guy out of the caper for years.

They also all eventually understand that the hard work and preparation is what leads to success.

Probably takes 12 months. But they all get there.

It’s part of forming his “Elite” environment

Jaymie Graham is highly rated as an assistant coach at West Coast and Freo and has been thrown up as a potential untried coaching candidate.

Good luck appointing him as our coach though after a more highly credentialed WA coach in Scott Watters got burned alive by Saints supporters.

It wasn’t Saints supporters that cooked Watters

He did that all on his lonesome.

He alienated pretty much everyone at the club outside of the younger players. To the point where there would have been a mass walkout of staff if he hadn’t been boned

Oh and I doubt he has signed anything.

He hates going up against other prospects, last time he did it was 2006 for his first Saibts gig and I remember reports that while he thorough, he showed in some of his answers to questions that he thought it was bs.
So while he won't go through a selection process, surely the board need to do DD and he need to present his thoughts and vision of what the Saints can do in the coming 3-5 years.

Disagree.

I think he needed a breather and to step away.

He will be better for it.

Especially if he truly is open to outside help and wants specific people in key roles like forward/transition coach.

He was coming well before the review panel was even appointed.

Fanciful for people to link his decision to Ross Lyon.

August 2022

"The Saints have been exploring the possibility of bringing Hayes back to clubland after two seasons away from the game, meeting with the St Kilda great in Sydney in recent months"

Considering that he can be sacked after 6 months the length is no issue just the coin that was going screw our soft cap if it was Clarko.

I remember speaking to a couple of business colleagues who worked at Collingwood FC back after they won the 2010 flag. Apparently in the reviews of the game over that summer, one of the points mentioned was that they were confident that they could exploit Lyon's game plan and strategies- worked pretty well.

Exciting.

One thing though, isn’t Lindsey’s son a Carlton benefactor?

Had Max Hudgeton and Ball for his ip and stole all our MacBooks on the eve of the GF and were experimenting with low dose HGH.
