If the doctor/trainer call the stretcher onto the ground, does the player have to leave the arena on the stretcher?

In years gone by this was always the rule, yet on the weekend a player left the ground by himself even after the stretcher was brought out onto the ground.

Has this rule changed in recent years?

No he doesn't have to leave the ground on the stretch but he must leave the ground and cannot return for 20 minutes.

If the player leaves the ground ON the stretcher he is not permitted to come back on for 20 mins. If the stretcher comes out onto the ground but the player gets up and runs off assisted etc, he can return whenever he wants.

he actually does have to leave on the stretcher once it enters the field, otherwise the team is fined i do believe.

does it matter?

actually it does matter.

in the past (i do not know the current ruling) once the stretcher came onto the ground the game had to stop and the player HAD to leave the ground on the stretcher.

They introduced the rule saying that the player had to get onto the stretcher and taken off the ground (whether or not he could still walk) as teams were using the stretcher and the ability to stop play to break up the game or time waste. (ie one team is on a 3-4 goal burst... bring out the stretcher for 3 minutes and stop at he game and the teams runs on).
