Trade update from Charlie Gardiner:

Key points:
-Pleased with the resignings. Getting Papley and Mills locked in were keys for the club
-Excited to have Buddy on for another year
-Happy with the draft picks we have. Open to trade them but sounds unlikely.
-We haven't made a decision on Naismith and Bell. We're going to see how our trade period goes before making a call on both
-Club is optimistic where the list is at. Disappointed with Grand Final result but believe they can improve a lot and grow. Lot of inexperience in the playing group, get more games into it

Rinse and repeat. Same boring shit every single year.

Not sure what the complaints are though. Club is well run, you don't get better by making massive changes. Instead you need to make small incremental improvements overtime
Every club is out there improving their lists and what are we doing? Having a ****ing tea party. We just lost the gf by a confidence shattering 80 points, but let's sit on our hands and watch all our competitors improve.

Every club thinks they are improving their list. Essendon and Carlton have "improved" their list for years and still can't make the finals. To your point, we're doing the same we have in the last 4 years. Since then we have gone bottom 4 to grand final - what other club has improved as much as we have over that period?

Just because we're not making radical changes in the trade period doesn't mean we're not improving. Just because a club is making big trades doesn't mean they are improving

Yeah that's their bad list management/game plan. Our team does a far better job when they actually do it.

Yes and now we're actually in the window, sitting on our hands doing **** all is not going to make up an 80 point deficit.

I'm not asking for radical changes. Just try something that might improve us in any way. We don't have to sign cripps. But bringing in established players that give us a different dynamic will fast track improvement. Esava would change our dynamic completely. We don't have an Esava type on our list. Yet we do nothing.

Stoked to see them re-sign. Clarke probably deserved a 2 year deal, but happy to see him there for at least another year.

"Sydney Swans Executive General Manager – Football, Charlie Gardiner, said Clarke’s one-year contract is a reward for his hard work."

Yeah, 1 year seems oddly short compared to all the club's other recent longer signings. Maybe they're not convinced his impressive second-half of this year wasn't just a flash-in-the-pan?

As someone else mentioned, he likely has a trigger clause in it. I'm fairly certain Swans said we had tabled him a 2yr contract

6 big dances in 17 - I’m very happy with “rinse and repeat” - whatever that is

You don’t seem a swan supporter
**** off. How would you know? I'm a 12 year interstate member. You don't know know me. Just because I want to see improvement in a different way to you that doesn't make me a swans supporter? Don't judge me ****wit.

Ryan’s lock down job on key attacking defenders in the back half took the whole comp by surprise - a whole concept generated by our coaching staff - that will now try to get replicated by other clubs but also worked out over the off-season how to combat it - could be a one (half) season wonder

We all accept Clarke still has his deficiencies.

It’s not like a three year offer came in from any one of the other 17 Clubs

One year seems about right and Clarke’s management knows it too

Swans great joins Giants

Sydney great Tadhg Kennelly has joined Greater Western Sydney as head coach of the Giants' Academy.

A veteran of 197 games for the Swans, including the 2005 premiership, Kennelly joins the Giants after previously working with the AFL Academy, AFL NSW/ACT and Sydney since retiring.

"We're thrilled to appoint Tadhg to the role of head coach of our Academy programs," Giants head of academies Jason Saddington said.

"With Cam Bernasconi departing to head up the AFLW program, a role opened up to work with some of the best young talent in our academy region and we identified Tadhg as the ideal candidate.

"He brings a wealth of experience in the coaching space and across his AFL career he showed an incredible determination and ability to learn and understand the game.

"We're excited to have a player and coach of the calibre of Tadhg join our club and he’s excited to get started."

I think his position in the 22 is tenuous when the season starts again. Campbell and Sheldrick will be used more which squeezes out Clarke.

Who was that Freo tagger (Crowley or something) who made midfield taggers a thing for a short period of time. He was one of the most high profile players in the league and then suddenly nothing. Sometimes it doesn’t take much for inventive roles to be found out by oppositions and then become redundant.

I think Clarke and the Swans know knows that Clarke will continue to need to fight to be starting 22 next year over Wicks, Sheather, Campbell, etc.

Glad he picked up a gig in the industry.

He could potentially help western Sydney players transition from the round ball to the oval ball, given his background.

Edit: Interesting to see Swans and GWS swap coaching staff. Hopefully it leads to more mutually beneficial player trading in future too.

I like Clarke a lot, and really respect him, but he's still got a hell of a battle keeping his spot.
I hope he continues improving and solidifies himself.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Opportunities for coaching if they don't want to leave NSW only 1 alternative option. Both have already stated its difficulty to get other coaches to move here.

In truth it also saves both teams money for 'moving & cost of living' expenses.
