All in strategy. What a joke.
I will reveal the big joke of this article. It assumes because we brought in 4 players in the trade period that we are sacrificing our future....rather than going just to the draft. We did both. And may I add at minimal cost to out draft picks.

We have been going to the draft for years. We have a long list of draftees and rookies still on our list who are developing.
I will exclude what I consider to be our best 23.
This is our future pipeline of players not considered best 23.

The ages of the above players are relatively young. We already have a pipeline.

We have been going to the draft for years. We have a midfield that is except for 3 players, 23 years old or younger. And we made a grand final 2 years ago with this midfield.
This year we added Adams and Jordon(for free) to bolster the midfield.

We snagged Grundy, arguably the 2nd best ruck behind Gawn for a future 2nd.
We brought in an experienced KPD in Hamling (for free).

So bringing in 4 experienced players Jordon(free), Hamling(free), Adams(2nd) and Grundy(future 2nd) is going all in.

We also drafted the best young ruck IMO. A midfielder(Cleary) that Collingwood bid on with its first pick, another KPD in Snell and and rookied in Kirk. Hardly going all in for the now.

The article is a joke.
Agree. Save the ‘all in’ stuff for when we snag Jamarra and sign Logan on long term deals. After we win the flag this year ofc.

The major.all.in.comment was absolute tosh.

Who knows about the speculation on Horse.

However our inside midfield was one of the worst in the comp and it had to be addressed.

Grundy and Adams are quality upgrades on what we had in 2023. A fit Sheldrick walks into the mids.

I dont think the article makes assumptions that we have sacrificed our future or anything of the sort with bringing in those 4 players.

Its loosely trying to join the dots between Longmire contract expiring in 12 months and weither this is his final hurrah as in "all in for John Longmire tenure"

Quote from the article disagrees with you
"Longmire made a number of decisions that reversed previous strategies and now clearly has designs to win the premiership in the very short term – even if it means sacrificing some long-term success"

"This brinkmanship will either be considered brilliant within two years or foolhardy"

The article is rubbish but it does pose the question how long can you keep improving before you miss your opportunity ? We've been on this rebuild / improvement curb for some time now. If it is not this year or at the very least next year we are a serious contender then we are treading water until the tide finally washes over us. My opinion is it is just about time.
Agree. You can't continue to be a contender without ever taking the big prize. That defeats the purpose & eventually you will take a nose dive as you regenerate your list. Cats did a lot of trading to win one but that is all. They are already in the rebuild phase. If you look at their list there are something like 10 who will retire within 4 years. They now have a big gap between their middle ranking players & the bottom 6 or 8 players in the team. Mainly because of lack of blooding & drafting at good spots.

We need to win a premiership or three with the lust we gave & the additions that come in the next three. While we have this good bunch of experienced players. Even though we are still young, we have blooded youngsters in the last 5 years.

or even this
"It will be interesting to see how the draft and rookie draft play out. If it is more of the same from the trade period it will be more about whether a player can play now, rather than the best future talent"
My belief is that the club saw the opportunity to bring in Grundy (an A grade ruck) to replace a banged up Tom Hickey and be ahead of an unreliable Ladhams and took it. Simple good list management.
I bet we couldn't believe our luck when approached by Adams' manager and said "yes, please!".
Nice fishing to pick up two handy fringe players who at very worst will be very solid depth.
Sensible drafting to take players who would take a while rather than ones who would be ready before there was room in the top 28. Again, good list management.
The article is pure froth.

lol .. we drafted a ruck and a defender who are long term investments who are unlikely to be seen near the seniors for a couple of years.

The one piece of short term thinking (that most here support anyhow) was retention of Reid.

"long term success" there is zero evidence we were on the path of success had we not made those trades.

These 4 inclusions i thought bring us closer to success then further away.

Very odd article

I pointed all of that out in a post answering the article. I thought the article badly written, badly researched & relying on The 1970's North Principal, bring in all the experienced players to win premierships. Since adopted by Cats. He seems to think we have gone that way & in doing so compromised future drafts. That's total bull. We still kept our draft picks basically in tact. Two Free Agents, two trades. Only two draft picks used in reality.

Geelong is a anomaly they can bring in A graders for 400-500k they can afford to just top up year after year.

We cannot do that.

It is hardly going all in when we trade in two players in Grundy and Adams for basically a 2nd Round and 3rd Round Pick spread over two drafts and getting a 1st Round pick back in the process of our overall trade period. We have taken a free hit at Hamling and Jordon which is in line with previous free agency recruits we have targeted over the last 5 to 7 years. At the same time we have stocked up in our positions in the draft in the last two years.

The opinion article is someone putting two and two together and getting the answer completely wrong. Horse does not have the final say of list management so his contract status has nothing to do with list management decisions and the club would not make decisions based upon one person's future alone.

Rocket Eade told me once he has no say apart from 1 player

I sort of disagree with this. We have been contending since Moses was a boy. Grand Finals in 05,06,12,14,16,22. We have been in countless final series also in the same time frame. With good management, good coaching, man management, recruitment, development we can have our cake and eat it too. We will be thereabouts this year too. Don't judge the Swans by the actions of most of the other sides in the comp. We have our own barometer.
We have an eye to the future and an eye on the present.
Always. That sets us apart from most.

For those interested in the Fantasy Leagues

Fantasy footy people are interesting sometimes because they really focus on just a few things, some of which can be quite enlightening, like how much game time is this player going to get, is he going to play mid + forward, how well do you think he'll go this year.

Grundy is hot property right now, partly because his price has dropped, but also a sign of confidence he'll get back to his old form.
Some positive talk about Taylor Adams if as likely he plays of of midfield minutes as well as forward
Plus the age-old (and not unreasonable) speculation about Heeney -mid, forward.
Apparently James Jordon was fantasy rookie of the year in his first year way back whenever.

Speaking of Grundy, I've only just come across this old review of Grundy's career from way back in October. For those who like me recall that he went from hottest ruck in the league to VFL also-ran but can't remember how, this describes that path in granular detail. Not sure if it's paywalled or not but this is the bit that stuck: getting towelled up by Essendon last year.

Max Gawn went down injured and Grundy stepped up. However, when the [Dees] faced the Bombers, the tag team of Sam Draper and Andrew Phillips stretched the Dees’ recruit. Watching this, I remember thinking that the 2019 version of Grundy would have handled this. More to the point – the 2019 version would have taken on both Bombers and ran them into the ground. The 2023 version couldn’t do anything close to that and was found out.

Guardian poll on Australia's greatest sporting moments. Sadly 'Davis come save us' is not one of them BUT of the seven AFL/VFL/VFA moments three count 'em THREE are Swans players so stick that up your so-called greatest club-of-all jumper Collingwood.

It's a fun read. And you can still vote.

I don't hate myself enough to want to watch an Essendon game by choice. So I can't comment on that game.

But I thought Grundy was excellent in the game against us and probably second best on ground after Oliver.

He averaged 138 ranking points in the games he was solo ruckman for Melbourne (143, 144, 128).

He only has to be 80% of the player he was at Collingwood to be a massive upgrade for us.

Yeah. I saw that. Can't argue with Bob Skilton and Goodsey for the first two. I'm satisfied with Pratt at #3 although there are numerous other contenders. But I can think of multiple players I'd have ahead of Magic at #4: Bedford, Round, and Kelly for starters.
