The rule shouldn't be there though. Why is the player who is going for the ball penalised? McVeigh didn't slide in with the boots, he was just finding the footy in the pack and barely touched Hunt really. I hate it.

Is this a serious question? To protect their shins. They cop kicks and studs to that area all the time. Ever wondered why lots or ruckmen never have their socks fall down? They are taped up to help keep the pads in place.
