I'm also of this view and support Gerard's assessment. Unlikely to happen though but we can only hope the club has the balls to see it through.

Bigger issue for me is how do we get A grade talent on our list. Not enough talent for me is the greater challenge

See the way I see it is Nathan has finally got the puzzle that he wanted coming together, yes I know it was a dam good side that he took over but that's a different conversation.
He has build this side and I think the amount of young talent is there but lacks the experience right now to compete consistently, so Buckley should get first crack at turning his list into something special, I believe he will be coaching us into next year and that's when the pressure should come if results are lacking.
I personally am happy for him to remain as long as we are improving as 2017 unfolds, the first 2 rounds haven't been as bad as the media are making out.
Just a little frustrating for us supporters.

Well said.
I suspect Nathan will coach us next season as well.

The wheel will turn soon enough

So you are okay of us going Backwards for the 6th Straight Season?

I think he wasn't saying that.
Sometimes you have to step back, reassess, reboot, then go forward again.

I'm not sold on Bucks and am in the sack camp, but I thought Whately made an impressive case. I don't think he will be sacked midseason, but for him to coach next season we need to see something soon to confirm we are on track.

I can't give a tick to any of these yet:
- prove he can adequately coach defensively
- develop young players
- get a consistent effort from players week to week

With you all the way on #1 Coach defensively. Seen none of this in 5 years since Heater left.

Nathan brown being a dumbass as usual. really not a very bright bloke.

mayne and wells at free agents not trades. they cost nothing except cap space.
and a load of that cap space. They also cost us developing some younger guys in those positions because both those guys are depth players in a team challenging not one developing.
Have a look at the disgruntled players that have left the club, and the ones that have not developed and the imbalanced list we have with no young KPP in the wings

do you know the reasons why they were brought in?

11 years

Leigh had about 10, loved Leigh!

Bob Rose now there's a football tragedy he was there for awhile.

At the end those baying for blood, that's there view that the coach is the key ingredient.
Appoint a good coach suddenly Fasolo kicks straight; suddenly White becomes AA etc.

But anyway

Was it 10 years of regression ? Cut the losses this season, probably end of this season. Buckley by his own admission said finals or bust. I'll give him this that he probably realises that after 6 seasons trying to "win" the locker room and "building" his own team that if he couldn't take the team to finals at the very least that he had done all he could to get what he could out of that group, which in turn is a reflection on his ability to coach and that he gave it his best but that he wasn't good at it so he called it a day

If you say so, ok then.

With a bit of luck and hit bit more polish we are sitting 2-0. Then is there all this pressure on us?

We haven't won yet but we are not getting flogged. We play well in patches and have small brain fades.

We have completed well against the better sides that shows we have something there. It's just getting it out on a more consistent basis. The club chose a path to follow and rebuild the club with a lot of kids. This while the suns and gws came in and took a big chunk of the top end talent. Ok you may think that's bad timing but Bucks did that knowing he is going to cop heat while we rebuild. All sides have injuries but when you're introducing a lot of kids you can't afford to have them to you're key players. We have been unlucky in this department but get a few guys back fix our little mistakes and I'm sure we will see the improvement that we are expecting this year.

You can say he has had 5 years already but I think we have been to rock bottom and can now start to climb back up. We have taken the hits we needed to.

This is a guy who have been with the club since 94 and done nothing but put its interests first. I willing to give him more then 2 weeks and 2 close loses before I'm ready to dump him. Even if he does pick Blair this week( which will make me cry).

Nice post.

We are there about, and have some weird brain fades....
But nothing has killed us like accuracy!
It's a killer.

Sometimes reading the perennially joyous posters you'd think we lost both games by 100 points each game.
It's not like we didn't play with team spirit against the Bulldogs.
Costly in the forward area, absolutely.
Then the scrappy Richmond game.... misses like that direct in front, kills you dead.

So the panic? Well some handle dissapintment differently.

I just think, it's happened, what can we learn, what can we do better, dust off, go again.

I thought I'd take a look at the premiership coaches of the last 20 years and see how they stacked up against Buckley and in particular whether I was correct in my assumption that no coach prior to winning there first premiership missed finals 4 years running.

The good news for Buckley diehards is that there was one and none other than Mick Malthouse. It does come with an asterisk attached as those 4 years only a top 5 was in play so it makes it harder to judge. In two of those 4 years his side missed out on finals by 1 game and percentage.

Below are the results I've compiled with the maximum amount of consecutive years of non finals appearances per coach bolded as well as the years they occurred. Some notes of interest on each man also included.

Luke Beveridge coach 2016 to present - 0 (won premiership 2nd year)

Alastair Clarkson coach 2005 to present - 2 - years 05-06
(pre 2008 premiership) (won premiership in 4th year)

John Longmire coach 2011 to present - 0 (never missed finals) (won premiership in 2nd year)

Chris Scott coach 2011 to present - 1 - year 15 (post 2011 premiership) (won premiership 1st year)

Mick Malthouse coach 1984 to 2015 - 4 - years 86-89
(pre 1992 premiership, all Footscray, top 5 in play) (won premiership in 9th year)

Mark Thompson coach 2000 to 2010, 2014 - 3 - years 01-03
(pre 2007 premiership) (won premiership in 8th year)

John Worsfold coach 2002 to 2013, 2016 to present - 3 - years 08-10
(post 2006 premiership) (won premiership in 5th year)

Paul Roos coach 2002 to 2010, 2014 to 2016 - 3 - years 14-16
(post 2005 premiership, all Melbourne) (won premiership in 4th year)

Mark Williams coach 1999 to 2010 - 3 - years 08-10
(post 2004 premiership) (won premiership in 6th year)

Leigh Matthews coach 1986 to 1995, 1999 to 2008 - 4 - years 05-08
(post 2003 4th premiership) (won premiership in 5th year)

Kevin Sheedy coach 1981 to 2007, 2012 to 2013 - 5 - years 05-07, 12-13
(post 2000 4th premiership, includes 2 years at GWS) (won premiership in 4th year)

Denis Pagan coach 1993 to 2002, 2003 to 2007 - 5 - years 03-07
(post 1999 2nd premiership, all Carlton) (won premiership in 4th year)

Malcolm Blight coach 1989 to 1994, 1997 to 1999, 2001 - 2 - years 99, 01
(post 1998 2nd premiership, includes 15 games at St.kilda) (won premiership in *7th year *not including playing coach in 81)

David Parkin coach 1977 to 1980, 1981 to 1985, 1986 to 1988, 1991 to 2000 - 4 - years 87-88, 91-92
(post 1982 3rd premiership, 3 years at Fitzroy, top 6 in play 92) (won premiership in 2nd year)

Lets hope our slow start has changed some attitudes at the club and we can come out on fire this Friday night. A bit of criticism could help fire us up.

It's not the result I'm looking for.
It's the performance.

We could easily grind a win but what does that prove? It answers very little questions about us as a team, individuals' abilities and of course the coach.

We need to see that we can zip the ball around with precise kicking.

We need to see that we can carve through the corridor.

We need to see we can transition the ball from kick ins or defence with unbroken chains.

We need to see we can hit the scoreboard effortlessly without having to "overwork" for a goal.

It's not about "work rate".

We need to see some gloss. Classy performances that make you sit back and take notice.

Anyone get a good look at Treloar's body language and maneurisms when asked about Buckley last night on 360? Clearly there are issues there.

Can you please describe what you saw that would lead you to that conclusion?

Wallpaper over the cracks if there isn't a performance to match

If we beat Sydney at the SCG then one would assume the performance of the team is improved on the last two weeks. Wouldn't you agree?

I'd prefer to interpret the left over leaves in the bottom of Treloar's tea cup.
