I think ruck depth is more a problem than quality

We're one ruckman short on our list

If there is a injury or two to our 3 ruckman we're down for the count

lol.

name one team that can lose their first two rucks?

you have got it exactly the opposite to the truth.

we have ruck depth.

we lack quality rucks.

particularly we get beaten in the ruck taps and our rucks arent doing well around the ground consistently.

lobbe redden and renouf all have good patches in the ruck duels but fade in and out during games and are prone to being walked over occasionally by a ruckman. lobbe and renouf have been pretty woeful around the ground then bobbing up for some good patches occasionally particularly in lobbes case (renouf has been almost non-existent around the ground) redden is quite good around the ground.

i do agree that gorringe has almost zero exposed afl form. does look to be a very promising ruck though and i think an upgrade on lobbe or renouf. a redden/gorringe ruck combo could be very good for us.

if their asking price was our first rounder i would hope we say no as that is way too much to pay for him.

our first for their end of first (pick 20/21) and gorry might be a good compromise but could also be something we could walk away from. if it was gorry and their 2nd rounder (pick 24-28 after the two activated compo picks + any fa compo picks) i would hope we say flat out no.

our 2nd round + one of these players (renouf/lobbe/young) or a pick/player received for them if they go to a vic club on-traded to gc as they are players who have some trade value but we can lose.

I've seen you say similar before. I would say that depth doesn't just mean quantity of players, it also counts the quality of the players. Essendon have (IMO) really good ruck depth, as if both Ryder and Bellchambers are out, they still have Hille. That's only 3 rucks, but their third in line is still a genuine ruck option. Gold coast have 6-7 players capable of playing in the ruck, but Smith was really the only one that stands out (Dixon's been great this year, but this includes playing as a forward, not pure ruck). Now that Smith has gone down with an ACL, I think GC are going to struggle.

I'd agree with most of what you've said though. I'm hoping that we can trade Renouf for Gorringe (sending both players home should keep them happy) which would give GC an established ruckman to cover for Smith's ACL recovery. We'll almost certainly have to sweeten it a little, maybe swapping some picks or something.

Don't know if anyone has already mentioned it, but I reckon Luke McGuane (unrestricted FA) would add quite a bit to our forward line especially with Butch and Shultz in there too.

Thoughts??

Noooooooooooooo thank you.

There are reportedly 8 clubs chasing Jack Watts. That makes it nearly a 50/50 chance we are one of them, possibly moreso as AFL360 lists Port as one of the clubs after Buddy.

Heard a whil ago that the Crows are leading the chase for Watts via the Dean Bailey connection.

What would people think about taking Johncock as a free agent? I'd be keen just to piss Crows people off. Even if he only plays in the Showdowns...

Won't happen - but I reckon he would be in our 18 at the moment if he was on our list.

I just don't see the point in bringing in anyone over the age of 28, even a ruckman. Will just hinder our rebuild. We need to get the right young players that we can develop, and know that we can hold onto them for at least 5 years to get the widest premiership window possible.

We should follow last years strategy and target players from top 4 clubs who are about 25th best on their list, in their early to mid 20s, and we can guarantee them a spot in our first 18.

Especially any big defenders.

I'd be up for taking watts. I think if he got his shit together/coached properly could play a similar role to westhoff. He plays best without an opponent. Interesting thought to see Watts and Hoff on the wings - fill the holes in defence, provide big targets in the f50. Both super athletic and can cover the ground well.

I don't think Lance Armstrong would have a competitive bone in his body if he played for Melbourne.

There's a reason jack viney is one of their best midfielders already. He just wants to compete and wants to win. Jack watts couldn't give a stuff if they won or lost.

If we are going for young underperformed key forwards with talent. I would much rather Sam day

Sam Day hasn't under performed, he is 20....a KPP and has played forward in a team with bugger all supply and getting the best defender. Bocks injury hurt his development.

The difference is , Watts is worth a very late first rounder or a early second rounder. Day is a top 10 draft pick easily. Arguably the most athletic person ever tested at the combine.

Lastly, Sam day is a KKP. I'm not for one second comparing them because although Watts is 197 - He doesn't play like a KPP. I'm not looking for watts to solve any of these problems, just a talented addition to the team. He's a 3rd tall at best at ether end.

Watts would be a tall forward who can push into the midfield/up the wing. Much like Westhoff in the first four rounds of the season.

Also, off-topic, but on-topic, I think at this stage, Josh Kelly is the player I most like for Port in the draft. Hopefully he slides to whatever pick we end up with!

Bringing in Sylvia and Watts would be a dream.

On another note, GWS should have a large number of players coming out of contract this season, surely some of them would be potentially talented KPP's.

Hence why I want day.

Maybe our first 2 picks for day and gorringe. Gc probably wouldn't be keen on that though

It will be interesting to see this year if any of the high melbourne draft pick failures who have changed clubs like gysberts and morton, start to suddenly perform differently. Without doubt the dees have problems in developing players, so if we could pick up watts for a second rounder I am all for it and would back king ken and co to develop him correctly. Everyone bags melbourne for selecting watts with pick 1 but every recruiter had him in there top 5 so there undoubtedly theres talent.

As for day....he would cost more but I think he would be worth it. Last years trade/draft period we targeted specific areas will be interesting to see what we do this year. I think our club looks a hell of a lot more attractive than last year and surely we have plenty of $$$ to throw around

30 year old fat back pocket. Where do i sign?

You've essentially described me. I'm a bit younger though (28 at the start of next season) but I feel like I could add a certain depth to our fat back pocket department.

What I bring to the table:

Tireless running (for 3 minutes per quarter no less!)
Elite disposal under 10 meters
Composure under pressure (unless I've thrown away my mouth guard in disgust, which happens around 1 every 2 games).
Ability to run water as emergency if required
Run a mean first leg in a boat race
Mad Monday Team Captain

I will be available at the start of next season. Will consider being rookie-listed.

I'm confused - are you describing yourself or Stiffy Johncock? Pretty sure that is his exact profile on the Crows website...

I don't think we could orchestrate a deal for Watts, Gorrindge and Day could we?

I like the idea of Watts and Westhoff on the wings, that would be an amazing sight, on paper anyway.

I think for Day Butcher would have to go and unfortunately due to injuries there wouldn't be enough currency in him :( eg first round pick, Butcher and Thomas for Gorringe and Day? Hmmmm if I was Gold Coast I would be saying yeah AND lol. Our our first round pick plus Butcher and Lobbe? i still think we are miles in front though.

I can't see GC trading Day to us. Why would they want a forward (Butcher) who is injury prone and who we have severe doubts about?

Again..Thomas - SANFL player - they are not going to want him.

Gorringe could be a possibility, but still unlikely.

I'm wondering out loud here but do we have to offer Hartlett up perhaps?

I know what he can offer but for his position salary etc is he delivering?

I would seriously offer up Butcher, Hamish, Westhoff in trade discussions.

Gold Coast don't need any of our players because they already have a high draft pick for every spot on the ground. The GC players need to want to come home otherwise we are not going to get them.

If a guy like Day wanted to come back it would cost something like our 1st pick + a decent player.
