Peptides! The *Essendrug Dopers: come smell the bull****! -PART 2

This is a reasonable position. On the other hand, the AFL trying to first sweep the systemic drugging under the carpet and then later making sure Essendon never needs to face public ridicule for their drug scheming means that Essendon has not learned their lesson. So they have languished in Never Gonna Land, losers forever and destined to be losers for many years to come.

I think this result is more delicious than any other possible result.
The fact they were rewarded with the #1 pick for having half the squad suspended for cheating is what gets me.

You get that for having the worst list, not because half of them didn't play because they were cheats...

True, also a strong and valid point. They used that pick on Andrew McGraw, though, did they not? If so, then cosmic justice was hard, hard at work and it did a phenomenal job.

Yep. This. It still defies comprehension that the AFL allowed this to happen.

The best thing the AFL ever did for Essendon was to completely guide the narrative towards Essendon ‘didn’t know what they were doing and no one had a clue as to what took place’ with thanks to the rushed but very descriptive Ziggy report. It was an absolute game changer.

That still forms the very crux of what most Essendon supporters and even neutrals with little understanding of the whole thing, cling to. “They didn’t know what they were doing or what anyone was injected with”.

It’s only those other pesky countries that dope their athletes like China and Russia, when our footballers plead ignorance as to what went into them, well that’s a different story.

Essendon is like the spoiled toddler that is never disciplined for being a little shit, so grows up a social reject and human mediocrity. The AFL is like the milquetoast, coddling parent.

I agree all of it is unfair, unjust, boy’s club garbage all driven by brand control and protecting the mates from the consequences of their actions. The AFL’s stage management that event are unforgivable, arguably as serious as the systematic doping program itself.

But the fact that no lesson is ever learned, like George Costanza at his finest, means that Essendon’s entertaining failure has given me far more years of joy that Seinfeld’s nine seasons of never learning a single lesson. I’m not excusing it, I’m simply enjoying the consequences of stage managing no consequences.

I had sympathy for the players until it came out they only put "panadol" on their list of drugs taken....

Apt - raising a toddler is the closest, I hope, I'll come to regularly engaging with a sociopath. Limited impulse control, zero empathy, unlimited wants and very little understanding of the consequences of their actions. Which is basically how I would describe James Hird also. He had zero qualms about what he was doing to the football club that revered him (and, bizarrely, still do) nor the young players under his charge. Just stick some experimental substances in their arm and hope you get a flag out of it! Who cares about the possible harm. He's completely unrepentant about it as well. And he's got a bunch of enablers around him, within the media, the footy going public, the club that still oddly adores him etc.

Now's he runs a managed investment. Does it matter that he has limited experience in this field despite his claims? Of course not - who cares if you burn other people's money! But of course GWS and now Port Melbourne keep inviting the cretin back into the fold. Jimmy the sociopath just keeps on keeping on - and I am certain an AFL club will some day once again give him a head coaching job so he can once again experiment on players to further his own personal glory.

So glad Striger is gone from Essendon. Dont know if i've been cursed or not, but everytime i watch one of their games, that school-kid fiddler seems to kick a miracle goal.
I hate it, them getting rid of Stringer is a sign that they are somehow making competent decisions again for the first time in decades.

It’s just Matt Rosa with the dead cat bounce effect. It’s the scum.

Watching Kayo tonight - replay of the 2010 game against Essendon where Buddy kicked those goals on Hooker.

My god we were amazing to watch. Great reminder of how epic Mitchell, Rioli, Buddy and Franklin were in their prime.

We had Beau Muston playing a defensive forward on Dustin Fletcher
Wayde Skipper and Brent Renouf in the ruck
Jobe Watson was bog average before the drugs
Amazing to see us before we recruited a backline and ruck. Gibson hadn't been recruited at this point (unless he was just injured in this game)
A backline of Tom Murphy, Steve Gilham, a raw Schoenmakers and Stratton in his first season - how the hell did that backline stop any team?

Awesome fun to watch this

Yes, Gibson was injured in round 3. Bad hamstring if I remember.

It don't think it did o_O

Stephen z Gilham was a premiership KPD
Yeh he was a solid citizen. But in the match I watched last night he was the backline's best player.

He was great when he had Croad next to him in 2008 having an almost-AA year. They actually worked really well as a combo.

The guy's career trajectory seems like proof that Machiavellian management doesn't discriminate against its treatment of any product.

There's a TISM joke in this somewhere.

But I just can't get past the notion that you can go from managing something as relatively straight forward as a group of footballers, and then after being banned for skulduggery, suddenly find yourself trusted to manage a different group of people's life savings.

Hird has an engineering degree from RMIT, worked in stock-broking then funds management in his late career and upon retirement.

He then undertook further tertiary study in France when he was suspended from coaching.

He also attempted to take his own life in 2017.

The fund he now runs he set up himself and he obviously has his own clients who you’d think wouldn’t be using his services if he didn’t provide them with a decent return.

To suggest he is “burning other peoples money” would be pretty speculative wouldn’t it?

I wouldn’t invite him to coach footy again myself but what you’ve written above about his non football exploits is IMHO unnecessarily harsh.

Great to see the sun lamenting Essendons finals drought continuing last night. You can just imagine them claiming it being over if they’d got up last night

Not an excitement machine, SG, but I liked the way he went about his work and he usually got the job done.
He was the only player in the 2008 season to go through the entire season with 100% disposal efficiency.

Irrelevant to the point being made. Sounds like more trophies to fill the place of the one he wanted badly enough to oversee an illegal drug program inside a sporting club.

I commented on the claim he was burning people’s money in his professional capacity. Which isn’t based on any established facts at all. He is well educated and has worked in that space for a significant period of time.

The point that he shouldn’t be coaching at any football club is separate - and I clearly said I wouldn’t want him coaching again myself. If Port wanted him as their director of coaching - that’s a matter for them, but I think it’s odd.
Still Brendan McCartney is the one who has to deal with that, and he’s been around the game for 30+ years.

As far as I’m concerned Hird is better sticking to white collar advice / investment work as it appears to be working out better for everyone.

I'd have serious reservations about placing any Machiavellian in charge of other people's money.

There weren't problems at the * for years, until suddenly there were.

My favourite bit of Essendon news over the last week was Ben McKay popping up on Channel Essendon to claim that they’re not far away from Finals.

You know, the guy that’s never played a final and played in 8 wins in 6 seasons at North…knows exactly what a team headed for finals would feel like… 😂

The way I’d put this issue is that when he had a responsible role at Essendon, he professed to have no knowledge or oversight of the “program” and was unwilling to take responsibility for anything that occurred.

I would hope Hird has matured and would not act in that manner if his current business ran into a significant issue. It may not be his “fault” but he is responsible none the less.
