As Malt-ucius once said “The ox is slow but the earth is patient”.*

The team has been slowly preparing for this day for 2 years, increasing their training loads, practicing ad nauseam different end game scenarios, perfecting their smothering techniques. And now the fruits of their efforts will take flower (can fruits flower? Eh you know what I mean).
  • Naicos will amaze with delicate handballs floating like butterflies into the waiting hands of his teammates.
  • De Goey will bullock his way through opponents like Germany through the French lines in the Ardenne.
  • Murphy will courageously abandon his man to come across and spoil certain marks in the best cross over since Full House/Family Matters did it in 1991 (love you Steve).
  • Tay Adams will provide inspirational motivation from the sidelines like Presti reincarnated (Presti is already Billy Picken reincarnate so his spot is available for reincarnation).
McRae has them ready. Wade has them ready. Jackie Lauder has them ready. Beau’s mum has them ready. Their time is now. Make sure you are ready. Give them your all, every last breath of air into the Collingwooood chant, every last scintilla of muscle energy in waving your scarf, every last drop of positive energy sent their way.

Carn the Pies, carn the Carringbush, go you bloody Magpies, number 16 is ours!

*Or was that the Cox is slow but the goals are worth it?

Thanks Gappa. Beautifully said. We need more like this in GF week. Pies are in great shape. Best team of the last 2 years.
Let us all in full voice get behind this great club all the way on Saturday. Respect everyone dear no one.

Now, I'm reading a lot about much we're battling. But people forget we are a team that has been built upon foundations of battling hard. It's the Collingwood way. If we look at the past two years, nobody expected a Grand Final. Nobody expected us to be even playing finals last year and not this year. Under Fly, we find a way.

But if we look to our rich history even more, Collingwood is the team that was written off. We were founded in the suburb of the poorest of the poor. We were written off. Yet we young. Our greatest period of success was when the suburb struggled the most. Because we were hope. There was no way Collingwood should have been winning in the depression but we were a machine. We continually battled against rules, against the AFL and yet still have found ways to win. We were written off in 1990, we were written off in 2010. We were written off so many times yet we bounce back. We have battled through it all. In recent years, we've fought against new sides entering the comp, against a board in tatters, against a club with no direction, against the media, against the umpires. Our greatest wins this century have come when we were battling there. R23, Carlton, 2022, a fine example.

And we still have found a way to overcome all.

At the end of the day, despite all odds that are set, despite who is in and out, and what the experts say, one of two teams will win and it could be us - we just have to want it and fight for it and score more points than the other team so the fans will sing sing "Collingwoooooood" as the final siren sounds on the last Saturday of Septmber at the G.

Floreat Pica hoc Septembris.

I overstated how much time Frampton played forward in that Gold Coast game. It was about 10 mins in the first quarter and 15 in the third.

In the third quarter he had 2 inside 50 targets; one he halved, the other he got a free kick for having his arm held by Ballard and goaled. His direct opponents didn’t get any intercept possessions, being Ballard at times but mostly Mac Andrew. They certainly weren’t zoning off him and intercepting, but it’s such a small sample size.

His other goal was while running through the centre playing as a ruckman.

I can't remember any bad luck heading into 2011 or 2018. Apart from mick malthouse self inflicted drama.

A key player for geelong literally got injured in the game. And 2018 we had a 30 point head start. I would say they are both lucky things. It's just we didn't take advantage of the luck. In 2010 we were super lucky with that ball bounce.

I've attended the last 2 aleague grand finals which were both losses for me, couldn't go to the win because of covid. I have just seen winning the whole thing as a bonus. If I can only find joy in a sport when I'm winning a flag it means I'm miserable 99% of the time.

I've only seen 1 flag win, and I was in Europe at the time so couldn't even enjoy it.

My point is most teams have some kind of bad luck going into games.

If we lose, it's not going to be because of bad luck. We are playing at our home ground on a clear day. If we can't replace 2 players then we are most likely the weaker team and aren't likely to win anyway.
Still not getting it Colin.

I rewatched a bit of that game and he was forward, back and in the ruck.
This is the flexibility he brings.

So given the loss of Adams and McStay who are the players capable of coming into the 23 for Saturday? Frampton? (Not in my opinion - not as a forward). Noble is the only AFL standard player who seems to be available this week.

It’s perfectly ok to have wrong opinions

Yep.

I also just watched the 3rd quarter against the Bulldogs; he had three I50 targets, one he halved, another he marked and goaled on Ryan Gardiner, the last he was in a 1-on-2 and was outmarked by the opponent not involved in any grappling.

He’s an unknown quantity really, but I think he can replace some of what we lost in McStay. Time will tell.

Our forward line is unquestionably in better shape than our defence was in 2018.

I’d argue each line in the 2023 GF is better than their 2018 GF counterparts

The 2018 GF side had Thomas, Phillips, Sier, Langdon (MASSIVELY overrated on this board), an inferior and less mature version of Maynard, Chris Mayne and an at the end of the road Varcoe

2023 is an objectively far stronger and more talented team

You lost me at 'Sier' then again at 'Langdon' - 'massively overrated'. Otherwise I agree this team is better.

We have basically only Frampton as our not quite up to a standard we'd expect player, but no one else really. Though McCreery doesn't get enough disposals or goals at this stage of his career.

We'll know more about all our players by Saturday night.

Just put $5 on Maynard at $81 for the norm smith.. he has grand final beast written all over him if you ask me
I suspect they will lock down on Degoey, which means Crisp or Mitchell will need to have massive games for us to win. Mitchell I fear has been carrying an injury all year and don’t think he’ll be able to improve. So perhaps it’s Crisp. Plays the big games well.

Aside from dropping Lippa I don’t know what else we can do to improve our chances, I suspect they won’t now that Adams is out as well.

I advocated for Frampton in the backline last weekend, don’t think they can activate him off no prep or finals exposure. I wanted to drop Cameron for Frampton. I suspect this won’t happen either so it’s Cox and then Cameron as the resting ruck forward solution. This still leaves a massive hole in the backline, it’s a disaster for our offence if we need Moore, Howe and everyone else in the vicinity to jump and spoil because we are so concerned about their height.

Replacing Adams again is very tough, we’ve not given enough exposure to players in the lead up to finals. Noble is the obvious choice.

I’m at a loss for solutions!

Sure had a great lead into the finals series, was better then than our Adams replacement will be at extracting the ball. Langdon was key, was just about best on ground. Super smart, great intercept and courageous. Good kick too. Mayne also played his role extremely well. So you’re largely wrong.

Looks like Frampton will play forward if he plays. He popped up in that area of the ground during match sim.
Cox/Cameron served as the rucks (so played against one another)
And so the forward structure was Frampton. Mihocek. Jamie. Hill. Beau. Ginni. Nick who played half forward.

Lippa played on the wing.

because Howe/Moore didn't participate, Crisp played off half back, along with Murphy, Markov, WHE, IQ, Maynard
