Either the flat white I just ordered is instant coffee or this barista is some kinda arseh*le alchemist...

I said it before...

Though I may not subscribe to a theory... I don't dismiss things so easily...no matter how whack...

Calling someone crazy because it directly goes against what you believe is too dismissive imo

Its the exact same thing they did to people who said the earth was round..years ago...except they burnt them at the stake
Its also a waste of time to listen to people who talk about the earth being flat. It may seem dismissive but anything can *sound* true if coming from someone who believes it so it can be needlessly confusing to listen to them.

We are all inside a giant TV show set like Truman.. cover ya willies

While everyone was losing their shit over the potential moral decay caused by ubiquitous pr0n being carried into every home by the internet, the real danger is the default intellectual-contrarianism fostered by the great unwashed, who thanks to Google are reading at levels not seen since school - or perhaps ever - but have no idea how to critically assess the bullshit they're exposed to.

That's a bingo!

Suddenly educated opinion and "I just pulled this out of my arse" are available on the same platform and the idiots can't tell the difference, so their subsequent views get formed by a combination of search engine rankings and their own bias.

People need to understand that whilst everyone has an opinion, not all opinions are equal, and some opinions are just plain shit.

The internet was always going to become the ultimate short-cut to thinking, why research and study to form reasoned opinions the old fashioned way when you can google it and believe the first thing you read.. fits in well with the "I want it right now" plastic generation.

Your point is well made....right up until the invention of the 3d printer. Now we can make a round earth!
Yeah but thats not a photo of something real, its just a made up model.

This hasn't changed from when the Bible was the first book people were taught to read.

Pre the mass uptake of the internet and email people used to send out chain letters (remember snail mail?) urging the recipient to make ten copies and send this most important message, usually a hoax or urban myth, to ten friends. Now these ideas and "facts" can spread around the world overnight.

Edit: and because someone reads something on the internet it must be true.

There was one thing I really liked in the Matrix thing, and it was in the series of short films that came out, the Animatrix, which was the idea of an athlete breaking through the Matrix by pushing, and pushing for that extra little edge every day, as an act of will and effort to break the rules, and beat what `everyone knows' is impossible.

The idea that reality in a scifi setting can be broken by someone other than a stereotypical intellectual/hacker is pretty unusual.

Underrated post, I too found that one thoroughly interesting, maybe more than the actual sequels.

It always amuses me the frequency of burst water mains read out on 5aa traffic reports, but this morning it's happened in my neighbourhood - this was just a couple of John Butcher drop punts from my place. I'd been wondering why the water pressure was low this morning...
