It's a crap study

researchers analyzed the 30 top-grossing films every year from 1950 to 2012.

The westerns made from about the end of WW2 - 1965, which had limited theatrical releases, but were constant mainstays for American TV are not even considered in that report. I can tell you with 100% certainty because I have 100's of them in my collection, that whole populations were wiped out.

In the over 500 war movies I have from the same period the death toll is staggering.

The 250 odd sci-fi movies I have from the same period the death toll is substantial, and that is ignoring the end of the world movies where everyone dies.

Then add in crime & film-noir, all with various guns, I refuse to believe the gun violence from 1950 to 2012 in movies has altered markedly because their sample size is so small & limited.

All they are doing is using flawed research to justify a laudable outcome, that is greater gun control in USA.

I'm all for government regulated gun control, America needs it desperately, but trying to help it along with bullshit studies is the wrong way to do it, it's so transparent & false.

I don't think it id flawed at all.

Small sample size here, but Expendables 1 and 2, whilst featuring more graphic violence, have less firearm action than their shitty PG-13 counterpart, Expendables 3.

All it shows in that the top grossing popular mainstream, gun violence is actually more prevalent now at a lower rating. Just because that doesn't take The Wild Bunch in to account I don't feel it invalidates it.

Americans are such a funny bunch. Can't show a tit. Can't see blood after violence. Can't swear. Can still have a smorgasbord of violent and sexual content, but keep people dumb and naive to the actual consequences of these things. Don't actually let them see the outcome of blasting someone away with a automatic rifle. Maybe that's why they all shoot at each other so regularly?

The Australian film and tv rating system is an exact science in comparison.

Great article on Slate about the making of 'Airplane', where they talked about how many lines were lifted verbatim from older serious movies, specifically 'Zero Hour'.

This includes the line "We need somebody who can not only fly this plane, but who didn’t have fish for dinner."

Damn stargate is a great film. I'm not sure how to feel about the sequels though that are being made, given it invalidates the equally good TV series.
