The key decision on McCartney is not whether to sack him it is whether we will renew his contract.

By round 4 or 5 next year the press will be circling asking questions. The old "Are you in discussions etc".

In all likelihood next year will be similar to this one, hopefully some slight improvement however we are likely to be bottom 6 again.

I personally don't believe McCartney is a senior coach capable of tactically competing against the best, Wallace and Eade both pulled off surprise wins whilst coaching us, I can't see McCartney doing this.

However unlike some I don't believe McCartney is hindering the developement of our young players and I would be happy for him to coach his contract out. I just hope the club is strong enough to be out in the market place in 2014 looking for a replacement.

*Caugh*St Kilda*Cough*PtAdelade*Cough*

Surprise win, superior game plan, tactics, and decisions both pre game and game day. Fremantle round 2, look at them and look at us, we won 3 quarters, but lost it in the first. Geelong, we could very easily have snatch that game had things gone a little in our favor, + a little luck. Brisbane, voss was out coached and they were completely outplayed. Maccas tactics didn't seem so bad when more then half the team came out to play.

Don't be so quick to call macca a bad game day coach. I am not defending him, and have been upset by several aspects myself. But when your game plan relies on which side of the bed any of 14 players wakes up. (who will get worse as the season progresses and they get battered and tired) Your pushing shit up hill...and it's fresh.

I could coach Geelong to a win, because its more then likely more then half the team will come out and perform to at LEAST the pass mark of their ability.

This year the trend has shown, the youngsters play well very inconsistently. When on a couple occasions they played well, the senior players, fatigued from having to carrying them, faltered. Hardly surprising the only two games this year where a good mix of senior and younger players performed were the very first, fresh as a daisy Brisbane game, and the redemption game against the Saints. The port game was more port being on the end of a down ward spin. You wouldn't want to rematch them now. Freo game was more froes defensive mindset allowing us to get back into some form, any other team would have continued the attack. But still, when the guys woke up, our tactics suddenly worked?! how strange.

Macca said something during the post game presser. it isn't a case so much of 1 or 2 of the players in any given 3rd of the field playing bad, you can somehow make change to compensate., We seem to have an entire third, forward, mid or back, fall apart, with 1 or 2 players actually playing ok. You cannot fix this on game day. Unless the players actually come good.

I often come back to this post to see whats going around and its the same old same old. Boring opinions with little substance as to why you think the guy is a bad coach

You may have written a really insightful post, as you normally do but I stopped reading there. People have given plenty of reasons as to where McCartney(or the coaching staff) are coming up short. Sure, not everybody has said smart things but many people have. Everything from Cooney, to Toumpas, to kick outs to playing too negatively, to the use of Gia, to the inside midfielder recruiting policy, to losing key players all at once. There are plenty of great points being made in this thread - both for and against Macca.

Also, how much do you think all the coaches get paid combined? A million dollars? I have no doubt they know more collectively than we do but that's their job and when they aren't getting the job done - and getting pantsed structurally by Melbourne, who are coachless is a clear sign they aren't doing it - then they are open for criticism.

(I will go back and read your post now seeing you have taken the time to write it so passionately)

Agreed.

Consider the club's financial situation compared to those teams. We are far from the Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn or Sydneys of the leaugue. If you'd like I could go through the last 15 year histories of each of those clubs and show you how they've had their rebuilding phases too (bar maybe Sydney who are propped up by the AFL). Plenty of supporters lost faith in Malthouse, Thompson and Clarkson during their tenures too. Not saying it will work for McCartney but to say that our trajectory compared to those teams is that much different is just not true. The draft also wasn't compromised when those clubs rebuilt.

You also mentioned poor drafting, of course this effects the makeup of the team. Before the past 18 months we probably had one of the most underdeveloped recruiting departments in the league - we simply couldn't afford one. If we had a more even spread of players, our team would look differently right now. Our list is very poor and we're in this for the long haul.

It's not as simple as other clubs have done better than us therefore McCartney should be sacked...
But it might be a case of 'those clubs are still competitive while we've entered expansion side territory so McCartney's tenure ought to be reviewed'.

Re- The poll.

I think he should see out his contract. I have no issue with the way he's developing the younger players. His tactics are on shaky ground though. We are a totally unbalanced side at the moment with far too much focus on winning contested ball. After that it seems like we don't know what to do with it. Whether this is due to the players at the club or his tactics and recruiting I'm not sure.

He gets another year and if we haven't improved the attacking side of our game by then I'd like to see him go.

Interestingly only 21% want Macca sacked by the end of the year.

I beleive that is a reflection of lack of obvious and better alternatives discussed and argued by those who would like him gone. This is also reflected by nearly as many who want him sacked undecided. Provide alternatives with supporting reasons and the poll shows on BF at least you could immediately push close to 40% support

Imagine if it was a facebook poll :D

I'm amazed there are still so many that say no. I thought a lot would be undecided, but it's good that people are willing to keep the faith, albeit marginally.

I have been a member of the bulldogs for 35years consecutively and I am as previously stayed am firmly in the "sack macka now" camp

BUT I would rather him for the next 20 years than Gia! I am astounded anyone would even contemplate this. The guy has a heart the size of a pea and wouldn't know how to chase a defender or get a hard ball get in an under 12 game. When he put his name up for captain I personally wrote a letter to the club saying that if he was the captain I would not buy a membership and I can guarantee you if they ever made him coach I would not give them a cent

I love my club but I will not support a bloke that prances around the ground and only kicks goals from other guys hard work. Admittedly he has been very good at this but imagine if he actually had a bit of heart and mongrel, what he could have been. A guy that continually ducks his head should never be a coach as how could any player respect him no matter how much footy he knows.

The only bigger joke would be making Higgins captain. He should be the first one out the door at years end for whatever we can get for him. Sick of watching this princess jog around the ground and give half hearted effort every week

I know this will get people's back up but the club has just hired a coach from ocean grove that never played footy and that is and will be an abject failure so the next CPA h must have passion, respect and mongrel and MACCA and Gia are both missing some if not all of these traits

I love how people say this like we just plucked him out of the BFL. Lets ignore the years at Richmond, Geelong and Essendon.

I enjoy reading those who want Macca sacked say that anyone would be better, the interview process would identify someone better and they don't have to come up with alternatives.

Bulldogrob I am excepting you as you and a couple did provide alternatives.

This is a major issue in the discussion. Anyone would not be better, see Neeld, the interview process is not always great, see Neeld and Macca for arguments against your own theory. I am happy fro Macca to be replaced, just provide realistic alternatives with what they would bring we that we don't have now

All you people are so predictable

Bag Guido and Higgo and dont note that we have a captain that has so much courage but cant hit a target if helped him and hows 0 respect regarding on field leadership. Oh by the way I gather you love that man Daniel Cross who dosent prances around kicking goals because he cant kick

I was going to reply in detail but honestly, can't be bothered. It would be nice if Mattdougie would stop quoting himself - we get that you don't like Macca or Gia but no need for the myths, misinformation and threats to the club.

Just remember Chris Grant was one of the panel members who selected Macca, go take it up with him, threaten to withdraw your membership if the club don't do what you want.

Whether it's this year of the end of next year in my honest opinion we will be getting a new headcoach.

Below is a list of coaches that could be available at the end of this year or next year in no preferred order.

What are the thoughts and have I missed anyone

1)Paul Roo's

2)Mark Willam's

3)Leon Cameron

4)Neil Craig

5)John Worsfold

6)Scott West

Yeah let's have a team of fancy blokes that only get the ball when the blokes that you say can't kick give it to them and let's see how that works for us. Ask how many dogs fans who they would rather have Boyd and Cross or Gia and Higgo and the score would be over 80% to the blokes that can't kick.

I have no time for footballers that don't do the hard things and even "finishers" can have some balls when they need it.

And for the record find me one dog fan that doesn't love the way Crossy has played whether he could kick or not? Westy wasnt exactly the best kick in the world but he had a bloody dip and did his job EVERY WEEK not when he felt like it. Cross and Boyd walk off the field every game knowing they went EVERYTIME they had to and if as you say you have watched the dogs for so long there is no way you can say that about Gia and Higgins.

The game has gone past Crossy he is now far too slow but he will be missed by ALL dog fans and you cannot say that about Gia coz I know as many that can't stand the bloke as love him

And Chris Grant is the oracle of coaching selection??

Much like Gary Lyon has been to Melbourne?

I did not threaten the club I do not believe my 6 little memberships is enough to make the dogs change their minds on any selection. I was indicating my disgust with the possibility and my intentions if try decided to go that way.

Brandon McCartney is a genius

And Gia is the greatest ever

That make all those with one eyed opened feel better?

Ask me the same thing when we 3 wins and 19 losses AGAIN next year

BUT at least the kids are developing!(a habit of losing)
