Toast Thoughts On The West Coast Game

I'll stop bagging Reilly, I still have my concerns under pressure in big games, but he's playing some damned good footy.

Think Stiffy needs to replace Doughty though.

Thommo was good - if he was Judd he would've got half a dozen frees today, constantly held.

Pets played a good game on Hurn, was at him all game, and had some very important line breaking possessions late I'm the game.

Vince and Porps both excellent.

Sloaney's intensity is brilliant.

Talia and Truck very good again.

Jenkins good.

Coaching wise, third term - I don't understand why we let our forward structure fall apart in the interests of following their players? Too many times we had the ball around the centre, and lost it because we had nobody up forward.

Wright has been excellent, could be our find of the year.

Jacobs had a point to prove today - and he did.

Johncock great.

The start of the game reminded me of the boys against Geelong earlier this year. Set the tone early with desperation and aggression for the ball then blasted them as the game went on :thumbsu: Although the one thing that stood out was there were a lot more 30-40m precision forward passes, which slowly killed off the momentum the eagles were building after they got a few quickies. Certainly helped my heart knowing that we controlled the tempo of the game the whole day.

P.s I f***ing love Wright, he aint a bad looking man either :D, and Bernie's form has been just awesome.

Just realised a missed a couple of players....

24 - Sam Jacobs - Reminds me of Darren Jolly...Bobs up around the ground and kicks the odd goal.....OUR MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
33 - Brodie Smith - Errors early and as the red wine kicks in cant remember lol

What was so bad about Smith's game exactly? He had two bad kicks from memory and one of those was a 30m skyrocket in the centre square. Other than that he was good defensively and all his other disposals were very neat. 71% DE and 2 clangers.

Our ball use was exceptional! We bombed it up forward a little bit at the start of the game, but later on (mainly cos Kurt went off) we really looked for the the leading forward. West Coast defenders had no chance with the delivery we were giving our forwards.

On Tippett: I think his game early on was actually very good. Was constantly double and triple teamed. Was knocked around in every contest and was probably only a matter of time before he got a knock to the head. With Tex coming back in next week, I would probably give Tip another 1 or 2 weeks off, just to be on the safe side.

That was the only downside for me. Waters got off the chain and they ran it out of defence with ease. On reflection the soft free to Porps late in the 3rd was crucial.

I think in the 3rd we struggled to find the structure with Tippett off.

That's an interesting observation. Often because we know Tippett is there the bail out option to the goal square is always available. Take it away and we are forced to be smarter and more discerning with our ball use.

Can we maintain that sort of decision making while Tippett and Walker are both there? They're both big bodies but if they can get more footy on the lead they will kick some big bags.

Such a great game! Always good to knock off the Eagles as I have a lot of inbuilt hatred to the team from the west!!!

Wasn't it awesome to see the brilliant form of Dangerfield, Porps, Vince, Wright, Scotty T, Reilly and Rory doing as they please!? Was like poetry in motion and wonderfully orcestrated was their hard-edged contests and superb ball movement and execution! :thumbsu:

The standout improvement for this game was Jenkins! We all know his athletic prowess, but he was uber impressive today, taking marks consistently, was getting some hitouts, leading into space like a true CHF, and kicking goals! Not only that, but his second and third efforts with some clean hands were fantastic! A true asset he has with his hands and effort in down low! :)

Of the negatives, the Tippett knocks continue... It was a sour note to a superb game by our mob.

These are the things that stick out in my mind at the moment, plenty of other points will probably be brought up by others!

Yeah, I would still rather have Kurt there. The 1st was still our highest scoring quarter, so don't think it effects us to much. Kurt brings our small forwards into the game. But yeah, bombing the ball should always be the last option.

What happened to Tippett?

I've gathered it was a clash of heads. Ugly? Blood? Helped off or ran off? Subbed straight away?

No blood. Hit to the Temple which isn't good. Spent a minute or so on the ground (laying down), but walked himself off IIRC.

Not sure if it was a coaching directive. Seemed more like the boys were catching their breathe. Didn't leak to many goals IIRC, so not too worried.

I only became aware after a nice possession in the second, where the commentators said he'd be down in the rooms for a stint in the first quarter. Might take a little while before we find out the nature/severity of the issue. Hopefully something minor, but you're right it makes more sense for it to be a strain.

Cox and truck? landed on him in a marking contest... reckoned it would have hurt with those two lumps!

Clash of heads, nothing ugly, no blood and I don't think he failed the concussion test but we were so far ahead, they decided to not take the risk.

After crumbing the ball and having a pot shot for goal in the second term, he clashed heads with Beau Waters and was lying on the ground dazed for a short period. Was up and walking off the ground very gingerly afterwards. On the bench after half-time and was subbed off midway through the third and not taking part in the game after the clash...

It was a terrific game today, always in control - even when they gained some ascendency. It was these moments in particular that I enjoyed the most because it showed how we reacted under pressure. Initially, not well it must be said, but then somehow we managed to settle and started this very patient kick and mark game as we moved the ball slowly forward. It wasn't the backwards tempo type of game ala Craig (where we nearly ALWAYS came undone at some stage with a turnover). We did this twice throughout the game, both times eagles had kicked a couple in a row. And both times this slow, forward tempo game resulted in goals to us. Once we did it the second time, it completely broke the eagles back. It was good to see us have a second level when needed. Overall, very happy with the team performance. Thought the only real worries for me was the non-performances of Petrenko and Callinan. Did they have specific roles to play, or were they both shut down?
