We should make a big play for Gaff, frontend ,backend the contracts just get the campaigner in!

What's the point in trading in 18yo who will take years to develop? Sure Higgins was a good pick but all the other picks were playing VFL all year. We're not outside the eight are we? It's list management 101 to trade in mature players when in the premiership window. We tried to play the almost exact team as last year. Rance didnt want Lynch to come, if we think we can not trade and keep finishing top 4 we are dreaming

List management 101 is having an even spread of youth and experience to ensure competitiveness over a long period of time. Ask any list manager in any sports and they’ll all tell you the most effective way to improve year in and year out is internal improvement.

That’s to say nothing of having to manage a hard cap which you can’t do well constantly trading in mature players year on year (we’ve seen that by and large to pry players out of other teams you have to pay overs).

Not trading in any players didn’t cost the premiership this season. What did was one Friday night where the opposition had everything go right and they played out of their skins and we were lethargic. Bringing in a mature player for say Higgins wouldn’t of changed that at all.

We should have gone after Stringer, Devon Smith, Motlop and anyone else decent at the time. It's all great to say let's keep the band together but it's about winning flags not making the players dictate who's on the list.

Sounds like a plan that would keep our window for 2 - 3 seasons max

Would prefer a slow burn that keeps us on top for the next 10
Smart drafting is the only way that happens not pissing away picks and cap space on mercenaries that have no investment in the club

Disagree , when you're the top club you trade in ready made players, if you don't, you're just gonna finish 4th every year. It's about winning flags that's all that matters.

Astbury and Conca plus 2nd round pick for Gaff.Free up cash somehow like Sydney did when they got Franklin and Tippett in the first year.

In this draft I would do that with a 3rd instead of a 2nd - but Gaff seriously doesn't have us on his radar. He's even a better chance of staying than going imo. It's like if Jen Hawkins said to you, "you would have to be last man on earth before I would make love to you" and you answered "so there is a chance then!"

But is Dunstan really an upgrade on Conca - that's just making more work for ourselves.
I just dont think conca does either inside or outside really well, and imo if we cant find someone who can do the combo better, we should look for someone who does one better and structure around that... dunstan was just an idea, someone woukd woukd def do inside better at least.

I dont think we need to be in panic mode either, higgins i think will move into the role long term as well, so club may be thinking that once the lynch domino falls, it will allow the other structural changes we seem to lack (eg more on ball time for caddy, maybe even more midfield timr for rioli, the combination solving a lot of issues)

Not if it was someone like Scully or Cerra who were, and possibly still are, Tiger supporters! Or The Bont!

If you think the club sombody supports as a kid means anything once they are drafted you are off your head

Out of the 40 odd players on our list you would be able to count on one hand the ones who were tigers growing up and it’s the same for any other club

Not sure that being a supporter of a particular Club affects much these days.......

Doggies won from 7th in 2016. We won from third. This year it’ll be second or third. Point being where you finish has some bearing on chances at a premiership. But it’s crazy to think a talented team has no ability to win it from 4th.

Also some of the names you’ve mentioned; Stringer, Devon Smith, Motlop and Gaff... they’d be fantastic to bring into the side. But I guarantee you that if we were, youd be blowing out your cap (ironically making bringing players through the draft MORE important because they are on less money).

You bring in those guys, you lose all shots at trying to bring in Lynch. Then you have no money to bring back Lambert, Rioli, Butler, Vlastuin, Edwards, Castagana, Astbury and McIntosh; all of whom have a contract expiring next year.

It also would have meant we couldn’t re-sign the likes of Grimes, Short, Grigg, Houli etc this year. By constantly bringing in these players it forces others out. Swans brought in Tippet. Lost Mumford.

Yes ,you maybe right but if you put it to him that you can play in a team with Rance, Martin, Riewoldt and Lynch. He wont get first tag and he's a good chance of playing grand finals. Opposed to that, he could go to North Melbourne get tagged every week, finish jyst outside the eight, but make $200,000 more a year.We should at least make him an offer.

Trust me Soc2 - Gaff is not short of offers, despite his suspension. It's a little more sophisticated than shooting fish in a barrel, plus you have Player Managers on % using all manner of "best interest techniques" to get deals done. Rock logic doesn't work in the world of AFL recruiting - Water logic works best.

I understand that but you would have a chance of them “buying in” given that. You hear a lot of ex players going back to support their favourite team growing up once they retire. Surely there is some hope of them buying in if they were to be traded in. Must be off my head then to think like that!

You are both right and wrong simultaneously. It is a blend of both. We do both, all Clubs do both, some have a stronger bias than others. What I said to Soc2 was simple. Trading isn't the only way, just like Drafting isn't the only way. They are definitely not mutually exclusive.

Not off your head TT - just a little too romantic perhaps - use it on your significant other more than your football club is the best recipe for success I've found;):D

Haha sorry mate didn’t mean the off your head comment literally

Really enjoying all the different directions and ideas we have

All just a bunch of blokes and possible lady’s who all love and are passionate about our club and want what we had last year and this year bar this weekend

Talking of an inside bull who can win the ball and farm it out...how about Tom Liberatore? Seems to be out of favour and is a restricted free agent.

A second chance at another club could be just what he needs.
Matthew Knights does not agree!

He seems to be on a 1 man crusade to make as many changes to the game & stay as relevant as possible for as long as possible.
For a bloke that only played kick to kick in the backyard , he sure thinks he knows it all, but that’s what you get from an ABC left wing hack

No credibility any more!

But FA should be reduced to 6 years but draftees should be on a 2 year deal plus a 2 year team option to give some power back to the clubs.

Bontempelli ;)
Trying to keep that young kid down at the cats
