By and large they have nailed their picks - what they haven't been able to do is retain their top picks.

According to an article on Perth Now the GWS have a bad retention rate, "The Giants lose players every year — their retention record ranks alongside Brisbane’s as the worst in the competition"

On this basis it is reasonable to suggest they nail their picks, and all the picks they get by trading 'want away' players, but just cannot keep them.

They planned around players leaving. With an absolute mortgage on the first 15 draft picks in 2011 (they had 12) it was going to be impossible to retain them all so they lose some on the way through but get draft picks back as they leave coupled with the picks that came with three years of Piss poor performances that were the inevitable result of a young list

The AFL have created Frankenstein and we're all going to pay for in the coming years. Nobody else in the comp has anywhere near the same talent pool

I would suggest the retention rate of quality players has been immaculate.

Shiel
Coniglio
Smith
Cameron
Ward
Patton

Those players have all been retained, comparatively they have lost Treloar, Boyd and Tom Dyson being of any note. Treloar would be behind, Ward Shiel, Griffen, Coniglio and arguably Smith Scully and Whitfield at a stretch. Tyson above all the previously mentioned Boyd is behind Cameron, Patton and Lobbe. McCarthy if goes you could argue could be in front of Patton at his best, that's a massive unknown as of now. If / when Lobbe leaves that may leave them slightly thin for KPF talent in the short term.

None of the 6 players at Carlton would be challenging for B22 spots and most last year were given away because they had to reduce list size so having a higher attrition rate is unavoidable. For the most part they haven't lost any great talent and if they have they have gotten rewarded well especially in the case of Treloar, to replace them in a few years.

I would say trelor would be be in the top 3. Could even argue he would be their best.

A midfield of trelor, coniglio and shiel could have been the next.cousins, judd and kerr.

You're underestimating Treloar
Still coming to terms with the fact that WB gave Griffin & pick 6 for Boyd.

SOS's drafting & trading was of the highest order.

I'd have treloar any day. Will be a champion.

Many ways it freed WB. And also sent msg that really anyone is tradeable. Remember Griffin said that had he not moved he would have probably retired prematurely. Or something like that. So it's a tough one.

Boyd we shall see. But he is over 200cm so would take him even longer to grow into his body. If he can step up, WB would really be unstoppable. Arguably they have just as much raw talent as GWS.

Yep exciting player and definitely can see the Shuey comparison
bit of a risk but could pay off big time. Just what we need IMO. wins his own ball, kicks goals and has pace. Could play as HFF that goes through the middle at first and then move into the middle. We also haven't had a genuine HFF for a while either so he could take that spot.

Not endorsing the idea, but Darling's name comes up because he is literally the only player we have with genuine value that we could probably cover. If the Eagles want to trade in someone with quality, they will have to give up someone of quality, and Darling is the only chip we have (other than draft picks). The alternative is go to the draft and hope they come good in a year or two.
Bundle up masten and lamb see what you can get lambs not fitted in and masten will make way for jetta when he comes good ,with all due respect i think masten is one of the problems

Not a risk at all he's talented should go in the top 15.

Will be some good talent around our first pick

Why we need to keep said pick. I'm pretty worried were going to trade it away. Here's hoping we dont
If we trade it away there's a chance we can get multiple players that would be handy in the midfield. Would be nice to keep the first rounder and trade some players for early second round picks though.. All depends how highly the club rate the young mids already on the list coming through and if they can have a good year next season

would like to keep this years first (regarding lobb, hogan and swallow remain at their clubs) and then make a play for them next season. Next season is regarded as a good KPF draft so we could use it to draft a few talls if we dont land hogan.

Redden episode should be a stark reminder to not act so foolishly in trading first draft picks.

Whilst Adelaide chose a relatively unknown in Doedee, players such as Burton, Gresham, Dunkley, Lovell, Tucker, Cunningham etc. were all available.

It could be said that some of those lads have had better seasons than Redden.

Still would like to get a bit higher in the second round though, good talent all the way through and if we don't have a clear standout player in mind for picks 10-30 then why not trade down for two of them. This is the draft to hit hard. Like I said though it depends how high the guys already on our list are rated. If we expect them to breakout next year then I agree it's better to keep hold of the first rounder to top up the talent. If we're going to need a complete redo of the midfield then we need to think about getting more second rounders. Whether that involves trading our first pick or players it depends. We don't really have much currency in terms of players that we would be willing to give up. That's why trading our first rounder keeps coming up. We have nothing else to offer anyone unless someone really rates masten, lamb etc, highly.

yeah agree. They might want to keep pick 12 as they think a genuine top 10 might slip or they might trade down so they don't have to reach for guys like SPP/bolton/rotham or drew.

At the risk of injecting facts into the argument, the pick that we traded for Redden ended up being bumped back to 21, which North (who got it from Brisbane as part of the Bastinac deal) used on B.McKay. So Burton and Gresham weren't available.

Of the remainder, Lovell played two senior games, Tucker 12 (for a bottom-three side) and Cuningham three. Only Dunkley could be said to have had a better year than Redden, and the word was that Sydney told him they'd match the bid if he was picked by a non-Vic team.

The Redden trade may prove to be a bust but it's not a "stark reminder" yet.
