Depth is the projected issue, not quality AFAIK. So anything beyond pick 5 is likely to be worth significantly less. Our F1 pick will be worth plenty, unless there's a miracle, but not worth a gamble on a F1 pick from a team expected to make the finals.

I'm talking purely about points value. They have a top 3 rated player coming through. Stockpiling later picks doesn't work anywhere near as well anymore from 2025 onwards. They will need early picks to match the bid.

I also didn't mention our pick at all. Just that the Suns will likely want to trade pick 12 for a future 1st.

Tom Dekoning has taken ages but in his 7th year as a 24-25yo he has finally become a decent ruck, not dominant at this point, just decent.

His brother Sam could easily be similar and come into his own in the same age range, but based on what he has shown so far he is outrageously over-rated, as demonstrated by the fact Geelong declared him fit for finals and left him out, preferring middling players like Stanley, Koldjashnij, Jack Henry, Neale in roles SDK was in line for.

I think both will be decent players in the future, but haven't exactly got the runs on the board to write home about at this point.

You may well be right, but who knows what the AFL will do. They confused the * out of everyone this year with the NGA bidding. And next year’s changes to FS , Academy, NGA bidding, hasn’t really been rubber stamped. They are talking a reduction from 20% to 10%( points discount ) on matched bids , but refusing to say it’ll apply to every academy player.

They’ll look after the Northern states and the academies they’ve driven.

The changes have been put in place already. They can't not be. Clubs plan for future drafts years in advance. It's why they couldn't make any changes to the F/S / academy system this year. Some clubs (like our own) specifically traded picks in 2023 to take advantage of other clubs needing points in 2024.

Let's say Uwland gets bid on at pick 3.

In 2024, you could use picks 32, 33, 45, 51
In 2025, you would need picks 18, 25, 33, 44

It's a huge difference in points needed to match. GC already have the points needed to match Lombard this year. They will be giving us 6 (and maybe 20). 12 is much more valuable to them as a way to get points currency in 2025, so they will likely trade it to someone. I'd say Collingwood, since there's the whole John Noble situation, but they have their own father/son bid to match in 2025.

Restriction on Northern Academies: There will be no restrictions based on ladder finishing position for Northern Academy clubs.

ONly way i see Richmond getting pick #12 from Gold Coast is offer them a deal they cant refuse

Rioli + F2 + $500k x 2 years for #6 + #12

This gives them points for next year plus cap relief
We could then use #21 (1st pick on 2nd day ) get into 1st round in 2025 and might even do the same with #22 if we get that for Graham

Just basically means we get #12 plus move our F2 to F1

I see Richmond weren’t listed as one of the 8 clubs trying to get Pick 12. Perhaps we were told they wanted a future first only and we are happy with 6 and 20 ??

why would we think of trading pick 21 to get into 2025 frst round??? Sounds like a loss

West Coast’s decision to sign Andrew McQualter as its senior coach for 2025 had an immediate sliding doors effect on the AFL trade and free agency landscape.

The former Richmond interim coach, who won seven of his 13 games in charge of the Tigers in 2023, was announced as the new Eagles leader on Monday.

He pipped Geelong’s Steven King and Collingwood’s Hayden Skipworth for the role after a long and arduous process from the selection committee.

McQualter’s announcement at West Coast saw Richmond vice-captain Liam Baker immediately choose the Eagles as his preferred club only minutes later.

The Herald Sun revealed in May that Baker’s preferred club was the Eagles despite the Dockers’ interest and vast draft capital given his love of the club and players including Daniel Kerr growing up in West Australia.

Baker is expected to be traded for pick 13 if the Eagles can secure it in a trade for Tom Barrass, who is heading to Hawthorn.

Richmond’s dual premiership player Jack Graham will also arrive at the Eagles on a four-year free agency deal in a decision that strips yet more experience from the Richmond list.

Both players had been waiting on a decision over the club’s coach and had strong ties to former Richmond interim coach McQualter.

It means there are now only seven Richmond premiership players from the 2020 premiership side sure to be on the club’s list with Kamdyn McIntosh still waiting on a decision from the club on his future

Graham had been offered an increased four year offer from Richmond, who will now have to sweat on any free agency compensation.

But for the Tigers to secure end-of-first-round compensation the deal might have to be as much as $700,000 given the 20 per cent pay rises in the past 12 months for players.

If the Tigers were offered second-round compensation for Graham the pick would still fall in the early 20s given they have the first pick in the second round.

Richmond’s list will have lost premiership players Dustin Martin, Marlion Pickett, Dylan Grimes, Daniel Rioli, Shai Bolton, Liam Baker and Jack Graham this season.

Those losses represent 1204 games of experience as the Tigers attempt to find a way to quickly bounce back after only one finals appearance since 2020.

It means second-year coach Adem Yze, contracted to the end of 2026, will have a tough task to ensure competitiveness with a young club which will be stacked with early draft picks.

The Eagles will now continue to assess key position backs on the market, with Tom Clurey, Lewis Young and Denver Grainger-Barras among those looking for new homes.

I knew I’d read this somewhere, this is from August 2024.
Note the part re whether it applies to all players.
I don’t trust the AFL to be transparent

“As part of this, the 20 per cent points discount applied to matched bids will be reduced to 10 per cent. However, the AFL will continue to review this and assess whether it should apply to all or some of father-son, NGA and northern Academy players.”

When Richmond has a juicy father son coming,that's when the CFL will make another rule change.
 
Blair said last light in regards to Rioli, they want our best player they'll need to pay up. Shit club.
