Depends who we recruit , most said that about coll this year
I didn’t.
pies best 22 is good.
they have done well with injury management as well.
went to a function that had Nick maxwell as guest speaker and the different road they took compared to last year was eye opening.

Wouldn't be surprised at all. Cotchin Edwards Riewoldt Lambert Tarrant all likely gone. Martin Prestia Lynch pretty much at the end of their careers and not a heap coming through to replace them
Our recruiting has been abysmal the last four years.
in my opinion of course.
this year’s draft crop out of the equation, I only see cumberland and Ralph smith, who may end up being a solid B grader at best, as pass marks.
biggie will take too long to be up to the standard.
dow and martyn, no.
ryan, I still hold hope for.

It’s not that good we smashed them and never looked like losing , what they’ve demonstrated is the ability to build a list in absence of high end draft pics , mid season pics all good . They lack for kpp , make up for it elsewhere , good material for the avg fw that suggests you need to follow the NM route to contend again

Have hope all. I think MJR will explode next year, Ryan has huge potential as a forward/ruck relief, Sonsie and Dow have class, Gibcus future gun, Cumberland will be a favourite, and Banks, Clarke and Brown will definitely get there. Then if we can snare a Taranto etc ... we will be back.

We could be bottom 4, depends what we recruit. Of those above Edwards and Lambert have had no impact this year and Dusty apart from a half against West Coast has also had no impact. Our defence should be ok with what we have coming through, but we obviously we need to find a gun mid and gun forward. If a player like MRJ becomes a gun it would help a lot.

If Ryan does make the grade it’ll be huge for us.
Structurally it’ll mean we have a 206cm ruckman giving our midfield first use and at that size nobody is out marking him in our f50. At the very least he brings the ball to the ground for our small forwards

I don’t know, we could easily be top 4 right now and the older guys that may retire haven’t exactly been ripping it apart .
I am expecting top 8 minimum next year ( with a decent injury run)
I expect that we ll bolster list with some qty incoming recruits , provided we retain our best < 25s we can regenerate in same fashion as swans and cats as we have existing qty to build on ,, bottom 4 clubs have zippo qty in their ranks

Personally I think our best course of action is to bottom out ASAP to get access to the best young kids possible and then look to continue building the foundations of the next generation. We've got some pieces in place but are clearly lacking in some other areas and the only way to address them is to being in highly rated kids that can build alongside what we've got.

We need a couple of qty imports to step in where some experience is departing

I agree , be interesting to see how long it has been since a club won the flag without a couple of top 10 draft pics .

People who think we should go into next year with the same midfield are completely bonkers.

"Hit the draft" is a 50/50 - we hit the draft last year and it's time to bring in ready made mids. Bringing in 25 and under midfielders like Hopper, Taranto types isn't bad management - you get 7 years out of them minimum - as good as hitting the draft with a known quantity guarantee.

Unless you have a top 5 pick you look to trade your first rounder and if the cost of getting a ready made gun is too high then you settle for the draft, assuming you have cap space that is and aren't overpaying them. Case in point Taranto for potentially our first who is a former Pick 2 and while a good player and for most part justified being a pick 2 isn't a superstar and in redraft might go between 5-10 instead. We might miss out on the next superstar but at least we know what we are getting and will get a 100 plus good games out of them.

Use Free agency to get older players who are looking for success or have been lowballed by their club i.e. Tarrant.

Imagine being concerned about midfielders who win the ball rather than defend when our midfield cannot win a clearance.

Do we want 6 midfielders who only defend and ignore our biggest weakness?

Did it ever occur to you that "Taranto can't defend" is more a coaching issue? Pretty sure players follow their coaches instructions more often than not.

Our biggest issue with our midfield is the two best that we have at winning the ball in a contest spend more time forward than they do in the midfield. Other issue is we play a spare in the backline rather than equalling numbers around the ball.

Personally I think Hopper is the player we need more as he is better in the contest both at winning the ball and stopping the opposition. Tarranto is better on the spread but I don't think we need that type of midfielder as much as we need Hopper who is probably the ideal replacement for Cotchin.

Tarranto has the greater upside and in time could be an ideal replacement for the role Martin plays but Im counting on Martin being able to fill that role for at least another 3 seasons. Tarranto has shown signs of being able to go forward and be a handful to play on and it was his calling card in juniors but for whatever reason hasn't be able to do it consistently. I think a big reason for that is likely coaching though.
