Taranto has moved up, but if he hasn't he is a steal at pick 7. We may very well have our sights on English. He shouldn't go top 10.

Sounds strange after all their stubboness that GWS couls give us picks 5 and 7 for mccarthy just for pick 3 in return

That would be beyond awesome.

Someone with a greater understanding of the academy system may be able to shed some light... however the pick 3 is significantly more valuable to them than it is to us as it allows them to take pick three in the draft and then use a later pick to take their academy players. Provided neither Essendon nor Brisbane bid their pick 1 or 2 (unlikely).

Exactly, they stand to lose two of their first round picks if a bid came at three but if they have that pick they take someone not on their academy list and it moves their next possible matched bid is beyond pick #7.

I need to pad that out a bit;
A bid at pick #2 = an academy pick matching of pick #4.
A bid at pick #3 = an academy pick matching of pick #6.

Those are approximate point equivalences.

All of a sudden GWS are in need of our pick 3... McCarthy just became the steak knives.

They must absolutely adore this McGrath kid.

Isn't that the point of the deal though? Instead of using their two first rounders to get McGrath they end up with pick 3 + McGrath?

They do? How does that work?

I'm obviously missing something here if thats the case.

Let’s assume Essendon and Brisbane don’t bid for McGrath.. GWS use us jump up the queue to use Pick 3 in the draft. The bid from an opposition club for their academy player comes post pick 3 and GWS then get to use their later picks to match the bid.

I believe that’s the theory. But I’m not full bottle on the points system.

You're right but it's not McGrath. He's not academy.

Id be ok with only a 2 pick drop. When we could ask gws not to touch our player. Not much in it for them though, only puts them above brisbane..
