Europe War in Ukraine - Thread 4 - thread rules updated

This is the thread for discussing the War in Ukraine. Should you want to discuss the geopolitics, the history, or an interesting tangent, head over here:

If a post isn't directly concerning the events of the war or starts to derail the thread, report the post to us and we'll move it over there.

Seeing as multiple people seem to have forgotten, abuse is against the rules of BF. Continuous, page long attacks directed at a single poster in this thread will result in threadbans for a week from this point; doing so again once you have returned will make the bans permanent and will be escalated to infractions.

This thread still has misinformation rules, and occasionally you will be asked to demonstrate a claim you have made by moderation. If you cannot, you will be offered the opportunity to amend the post to reflect that it's opinion, to remove the post, or you will be threadbanned and infracted for sharing misinformation.

Addendum: from this point, use of any variant of the word 'orc' to describe combatants, politicians or russians in general will be deleted and the poster will receive a warning. If the behaviour continues, it will be escalated. Consider this fair warning.

Finally: If I see the word Nazi or Hitler being flung around, there had better have a good faith basis as to how it's applicable to the Russian invasion - as in, video/photographic evidence of POW camps designed to remove another ethnic group - or to the current Ukrainian army. If this does not occur, you will be threadbanned for posting off topic

This is a sensitive area, and I understand that this makes for fairly incensed conversation sometimes. This does not mean the rules do not apply, whether to a poster positing a Pro-Ukraine stance or a poster positing an alternative view.

Behave, people.

While some U.S. officials have expressed skepticism that allowing long-range strikes will change the war's overall trajectory, the decision could help Ukraine at a moment when Russian forces are making gains and possibly put Kyiv in a better negotiating position when and if ceasefire talks happen.

"Removing targeting restrictions will allow the Ukrainians to stop fighting with one hand tied behind their back," Alex Plitsas, senior non-resident fellow at the Atlantic Council, said.
"However, like everything else, I believe history will say the decision came way too late. Just like the ATACMS, HIMARS, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, Abrams tanks and F-16. They were all needed much sooner," he added.

To some experts, the number of red lines that have been crossed reveal the inability of belligerents involved in the war to project power internationally.

While the Russian Federation commonly uses the "red line" phrase in international politics, it has simultaneously used it to shape narratives aimed at domestic audiences.

In 2023, Russia made 15 official "red line" statements, compared to 24 in 2022.

  • Ukraine's European allies warming up to Trump's push for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine (WSJ)

The script is too obvious, and all links back to Putin and Trump.

1. In the months before Trump's inauguration, Putin will significantly escalate the attacks against Ukraine
2. This will necessitate an escalation in the military support and use of weapons provided by Europe and the US
3. Putin will blame Biden for bringing the world closer to WWIII
4. Once Trump takes office, Putin and Trump will announce that the conflict must end and it has to involve Ukraine ceding the territory it has lost, as well as leaving Kursk (essentially a full surrender by Ukraine)
5. Trump will take the credit but it'll be absolutely devastating for Ukraine in reality
6. Putin will be emboldened and continue to make threats against NATO
7. Trump will do what he promised, and cut funding/support to NATO, leaving Europe vulnerable

Anyway lets agree that Russia needs to leave all Ukrainian land ASAP.
will be interesting whats agreed to if they do do a peace deal.
should the Biden administration have tried a peace deal sooner?
Ukraine have been losing more territory as the war draws on.

Is there an opportunity for Biden to end the war before trump takes office?
Or would trump get credit anyway?

Putin doesn't want "peace". He wants a full Ukranian surrender disguised as a peace deal.

If the war ends with Russia getting to keep all the Ukranian territory it's stolen and no deal for Ukraine to join NATO, then Putin is getting 100% of what he wants, and Ukraine is getting 0%.

That's not a "peace deal".

Europe (the EU + the UK) has a population 5 times that of Russia and a GDP of 8 times(*), there's no way it should ever be vulnerable to a Russia that can't beat Mighty Ukraine. Frankly it's about the only thing I agree with Trump on: NATO has been carried by the US with many European nations - particularly the smaller western ones - bludging off the US and not bothering to spend their fair share on defence.

(*) Last time I looked, a few years back.

Point 7 is wrong, Putins terrible campaign has shown NATO could handle Russia with ease without US help.

If and when the war ends draft dodging donny will want to take the credit even if he's not in office.
