Europe War in Ukraine - Thread 4 - thread rules updated

This is the thread for discussing the War in Ukraine. Should you want to discuss the geopolitics, the history, or an interesting tangent, head over here:

If a post isn't directly concerning the events of the war or starts to derail the thread, report the post to us and we'll move it over there.

Seeing as multiple people seem to have forgotten, abuse is against the rules of BF. Continuous, page long attacks directed at a single poster in this thread will result in threadbans for a week from this point; doing so again once you have returned will make the bans permanent and will be escalated to infractions.

This thread still has misinformation rules, and occasionally you will be asked to demonstrate a claim you have made by moderation. If you cannot, you will be offered the opportunity to amend the post to reflect that it's opinion, to remove the post, or you will be threadbanned and infracted for sharing misinformation.

Addendum: from this point, use of any variant of the word 'orc' to describe combatants, politicians or russians in general will be deleted and the poster will receive a warning. If the behaviour continues, it will be escalated. Consider this fair warning.

Finally: If I see the word Nazi or Hitler being flung around, there had better have a good faith basis as to how it's applicable to the Russian invasion - as in, video/photographic evidence of POW camps designed to remove another ethnic group - or to the current Ukrainian army. If this does not occur, you will be threadbanned for posting off topic

This is a sensitive area, and I understand that this makes for fairly incensed conversation sometimes. This does not mean the rules do not apply, whether to a poster positing a Pro-Ukraine stance or a poster positing an alternative view.

Behave, people.

Anti-Russification protests in Georgia have escalated following the government anti-EU moves.

Giorgi Melashvili (head of the Europe-Georgia Institute,) in an interview with SOVA: “We finally see the real face of the Georgian Dream, which is not Georgian at all, but rather Russian”

Large numbers protest, security forces have been responding - water cannons are in use. There are injuries, and arrests.

The reason Russia had been able to stabilise the Ruble is, there is very little trade in it.

So the Russian reserve bank could have a big impact on its price by buying and selling it, as it is then the largest trader in the market.

That they cannot maintain the price shows how little reserves they have left.

They had to suspend Ruble trading. That's drastic. They could back it with gold but that's not a very smart thing to do.

Putin has already wasted 40% of Russia's national wealth fund. He could use that to prop up the Ruble but thats surely throwing good money at a bad situation.

Russians going on conscription raids.

Mobbs I hope none of your contacts are subject to this.

I don't know anyone in Moscow other than following a couple of karaoke musicians & rarely exchanging some chats. When it comes to these, the majority are women so they're probably not targetted anyway. Hadn't seen these stories about conscription raids yet myself either! There have been raids in St Petersburg but those were nightclubs initially thought to be LGBT+ crackdowns, more recently heard it might be more about a poisoning incident.

One bloke I did try to track down was a guy who lived in Tuapse (there was allegedly a drone strike on a ship there), but haven't heard back.

Tbh, my convos with people I knew over in Russia have lessened a lot over the course of the war - either they are pro-Russian and well, I'm a westerner(!) or they just don't want authorities scrolling through their phones and spotting war chat in there.

Not quite as shocking as it might first look - having a criminal record apparently previously made you ineligible for government ministries, and now, for specific cases it might not.

More interesting is the last paragraph - staff shortages in these ministries and even the police force is kind of a big deal.

The Federation Council has allowed previously convicted Russians to work in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Federal Penitentiary Service

Senator Mikhail Belousov explained that the changes provide for the possibility of a citizen entering service if criminal prosecution against him has been terminated due to "active repentance." This concerns criminal cases of private prosecution that were terminated no less than three years before the day of entering service.

The decision may be related to a shortage of personnel: the Telegram channel “Important Stories” previously found out that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Federal Penitentiary Service are short almost every fifth employee, and the problem of police shortages exists in more than 50 regions of Russia.
