Europe War in Ukraine - Thread 4 - thread rules updated

This is the thread for discussing the War in Ukraine. Should you want to discuss the geopolitics, the history, or an interesting tangent, head over here:

If a post isn't directly concerning the events of the war or starts to derail the thread, report the post to us and we'll move it over there.

Seeing as multiple people seem to have forgotten, abuse is against the rules of BF. Continuous, page long attacks directed at a single poster in this thread will result in threadbans for a week from this point; doing so again once you have returned will make the bans permanent and will be escalated to infractions.

This thread still has misinformation rules, and occasionally you will be asked to demonstrate a claim you have made by moderation. If you cannot, you will be offered the opportunity to amend the post to reflect that it's opinion, to remove the post, or you will be threadbanned and infracted for sharing misinformation.

Addendum: from this point, use of any variant of the word 'orc' to describe combatants, politicians or russians in general will be deleted and the poster will receive a warning. If the behaviour continues, it will be escalated. Consider this fair warning.

Finally: If I see the word Nazi or Hitler being flung around, there had better have a good faith basis as to how it's applicable to the Russian invasion - as in, video/photographic evidence of POW camps designed to remove another ethnic group - or to the current Ukrainian army. If this does not occur, you will be threadbanned for posting off topic

This is a sensitive area, and I understand that this makes for fairly incensed conversation sometimes. This does not mean the rules do not apply, whether to a poster positing a Pro-Ukraine stance or a poster positing an alternative view.

Behave, people.

If that's the case then these men will be next to useless in the field of battle.

From their point of view they are just going to the field for their own execution, not fight in a battle. They is no incentive or motivation to actually fight.
If they are well down the rabbit hole, it will not matter to them.

Putin is a monstrous, evil, fascist who one day woke up and decided he wanted to conquer Ukraine. There was no other reason he did this, than his own insanely evil nature.
Nobody says that he woke up one day and decided this.

Reports that the port of Ust Luga was struck by a drone attack. Ust Luga is on the Gulf of Finland, halfway between St Petersburg and Estonia.

It's not the first time this port has been struck. I remember a strike quite a while ago (a year at least I think), unsure what hit it.

Target seems to be oil storage, however there's claims that a refinery was hit. Ust Luga hosts a port used for export shipping.

In the end Putin will get what he wants, I think. Not enough will from Ukraine's allies. Not enough people in Ukraine so war weariness setting in. Sad but I think true.
Apparently Ukraine has launched another series of offensives in Kursk, so not too weary yet.

I also think the paint over the cracks in Russia's economy is starting to peel. I don't think Russia has more than 12 months before their economy starts to force them to negotiate seriously. I don't see Ukraine giving up in the next 12 months, regardless of trump.

Russians getting their arsr handed to them in Kursk

Looks like Russians were doing the hard yards through mud in autumn attempting to retake Kursk territory, inc NK cannon fodder.

Now they are tired. Ukranian counter attack over frozen ground sees Ukraine retake Russian gains and then some.

2025 looking a good chance of a Russian collapse.

Think we should chip in and get one for our Russian apologists:

We saw how shit the Nth Koreans were at attacking, now we can see how shit the Nth Koreans are at defending.....

Some Russian shills are alluding to this counter as just being a diversionary tactic and the actual assault will happen in either the Belgorod or Bryansk direction.

First Lynx IFVs delivered to Ukraine.
Rheinmetal plans to begin making them in Ukraine.

Beast of an IFV, if they can keep them protected from drones, they will destroy any vehicles Russia has apart from tanks, and if equipped with Spike, can even take on tanks in a pinch.

There are various reports of the injured birds from the oil spills being transported to Krasnodar to animal welfare facilities, and then disappearing (the allegations suggest premature release into the wild) in order to delete evidence of the size of the catastrophe. [SOTA] [SOTA TG] (there are videos of the birds in enclosures here)

It is expected that some birds can be saved through simply getting themselves cleaned up, while more deaths are expected due to illnesses to such systems as respiratory. [SOTA TG]

Additionally there are mentions of birds being prematurely released, before being fully assessed. [SOTA TG]

Heartwarming efforts by average folks attempting to save wildlife, potentially tainted by political interference.

I can provide translations of the text in the above links if requested.

I've not seen any places to offer donations towards care facilities for the injured wildlife (of course its difficult to move money to Russia from without at the best of times!)

Per the Russian Christmas observances (Jan 7), Putin requested crosses worn by servicemen be blessed by Patriarch Kirill, and also requested his initials be engraved on these icons.

Moscow. January 7. INTERFAX.RU - After the Christmas service at the church on Poklonnaya Hill, Russian President Vladimir Putin went to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, where, at his request, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' blessed pectoral crosses and icons for servicemen in the SVO zone.

As the president's press secretary Dmitry Peskov told Interfax, Putin congratulated the patriarch on the Nativity of Christ and asked him to bless the pectoral crosses and icons that were laid out in the altar of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

During the conversation at the altar, the president informed the patriarch that he would pass on these symbols of faith to the commanders of the troop groups that are carrying out particularly important tasks in the SVO zone.

"I think that our comrades will be honored to receive these symbols of faith, consecrated by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' during the festive service on Christmas night," Peskov quoted the president as saying.

Patriarch Kirill consecrated pectoral crosses and icons in the presence of the head of state.

Putin asked that his initials be engraved on individual links of the chains to the crosses, Peskov said.

No nevermind, the drones were accounted for. This was just debris. "The air defense forces shot down the UAVs. There was debris hitting an industrial facility in Engels. Fire crews and emergency services are working at the scene," said Saratov Region Governor Roman Busargin. [BAZA TG]
