Wayne Schwass - Geelong cannot win the flag

Why is anybody surprised the "experts" have dropped off us? St. Kilda have just mauled Crows who were fancied, and though we got close, it cost us a lot to push them, while Saints just keep winning at will. They have NO WEAKNESS at all, while everybody is aware of ours, even if they are not severe.
Not convinced Ottens will save us--what did he do in 08 GF when he was fit? Dog-what's wrong? How many Cat supporters are confident we'll be better in the finals than we were last year when th opposition is better, we are no longer #1, and we managed to lose it last year when we were easily favourites?

It doesn't make sense to dismiss us completely. We're still clearly the second best team in the league. Geelong dominated the H&A season last year, but failed to win the flag. Who's to say it won't happen with St Kilda this year? Obviously, St Kilda should be premiership favourites given their recent form (if only slightly), but it hardly means Geelong doesn't have a chance.

Valid point's you have there jadub....whoops...:thumbsu:...veedub - could do w a jaydub..:D
I think most cats supporters always expected the competition this yr to close up, beit top 8/top 4. And while we missed a 'given' against the hawks in the granny we were always a classed an even side w 4-5 gun's that are 'marquee' players.
Because of the improvement in the saints, continued consistency of the doggies & collingwood. The hawks maybe closing in again; the Cats/Hawks/Doggies & Collingwood's window of opportunity beit where it's at has definetely tightened because of the saints sudden but belated strangle hold on the comp.
I've still got beleif in our boys, now that it looks like it's going to be one tough cookie to crumble if we get there & win...geez this 'title' will feel so much better.

its mostly just a bunch of no names trying to make a name for themselves by being controversial, they dont beleive it but they think they can get attention by making comments like this.

dermott and kb are both on the station that still has the lowest ratings and couldnt afford to keep grant thomas, they seek attention.

as for david schwass i couldnt remember who he was until someone mentioned the syd game were we came from behind, what media outlet is he on ? another no name after attention. just dont give it too him.

by they way the bloke who IMO dislikes geelong the most is dermott brereton.I Know lots of people get frustrated with R walls but at the same time I have heard walls say lots of good things about geelong.

in the last couple of years were we have had more succuss than any other side.

dermott, has writtenr articles about
how geelong cant win the premiership
how hawkins is no good
comparing geelong to the titanic
how a number of taggers can stop ablett
and how bryce gibbs is better than joel selwood.

i remember after we won the flag in 07 and dermott didnt turn up to his radio show on SEN.

I read a specific article that he wrote in the sun in late 06 or early 07 saying Geelong cant win a flag because they are to slow and have no fast midfielders. Pfft look how that turned out.

you guys for real I would have thought the supporters of possibly the best team for 30 years would have not given a shite what a retired football player had to say.

im sure you have seen the spirit of your boys when their backs are against the wall.

but to the geelong supporters saying last year they should have won it, it was a given YOUR RUBBISH it was 50/50 going in and 1 team had to lose 1 team had to win

at no point was the 2008 GF a given to geelong that's probally why you lost

Getting in context, Dermie was discussing Lake and said he and someone elst were perhaps the in form full backs of the moment.

It was muppet Hudson wh cracked the shits and like apetulant kid said "so you dont rate scarlett ? You are showing your bias" BVugger me is it so PC that you have to mention scarlett every time you mention full backs ?

Just on Hudson I remember his sugar rush on SEN on GF morning while they were all discussing the upcoming game and he was " you know we are going to win" and "yes dermot, but you realise hawthor have no chance" etc etsc so lets not start on ********s on the radio.

Now, on the main discussion.

Geelong are a genuine chance BUT.

The opposition is tougher than last year.
There is even more pressure on them than last year.
The same deficiencies seem to re-surface and some cant see any progress by geelong.

Burt you guys should be grateful for the negative media. The cats were obviously a bit too pleased with themselves last year to the point of being almost comatose. This will rev them up no end so it could be good. Its not the losses which are beneficial but the rev up form negative press.

PS Saints will win.

PS I just noticed this is the Geelong board so I have unitentioanlly posted here -I thought it was the main board. Apologies in advance for any offence caused - delete this if you wish

Someone talking about form fullbacks and not rating Scarlett in the top 3 is clearly showing their bias. Well done Huddo.

when i watch a geelong game i notice more what mackie does then scarlett but then again i watch the forward not the defenders so i cant comment on eithers game

I do wish hawks had 6 scarletts lol

I was going to have a go, but I can't now :(

Oh isn't is PPS? Or something.

This is actually good for us since it takes the pressure off... the more the saints and the doggies are talked up the better. stevie j's absence has been strongly felt - he is our most effective forward. with him and otto back, i'm still confident we have the saints and doggies covered.

We don't have them covered (maybe bullies...just) but that doesn't mean we can't steal it, it would be the sweetest victory of them all.

In all honesty I don't really care that they're writing us off. But I think it's a little flabbergasting that anyone is at all. Remember how we were dead certs last year? St Kilda are human. We exposed that when we played them bar 15 minutes of ineptitude. Next time we come across them, if we do this year, I'd still back us in. Anyone who thinks we have no chance of winning a flag this year is a moron not worth listening to.

Listening to SEN on the ay home from the game and Bartlett commented Geelong was only missing Bartel, Harley & Ottens - no mention of Kelly and Stevie J. His co-commentators didn't correct him.

My point is that some in the football media simply and conveniently overlook the truth to suit a story. e.g., Bartlett says Geelong's weakness is its forward structure. Of course it is weaker without Johnson.

As for Brereton, he is a tosser who has always hated Geelong.

From memory Schwass said the exact same thing heading into the 2007 finals series, not only did he tip North to beat us by 6 goals in the QF he also said we would go out in straight sets!

we have them covered... our style of footy stands up well in finals (fast paced, scrappy, win the hard ball) whereas the saints have more of a need to hit targets to be effective. in my opinion, that style of play may stand up for a quarter or two, but will break down over 4 quarters.

if the cats play hard for 4 qtrs and can convert in front of goal, i'm still certain we have all teams covered.

Of course we can't win the flag - as if any team's ever won the premiership with a 14-2 record after 16 rounds and with the best midfielder and best defender in the league
We ARE of course in contention, but in the history of the game, EVERY team that has won 16 in a row has won the flag. Saints are the obvious favourites.
