Very happy and relieved to have Culley on board.

Would’ve loved to give another like Florenca a chance for at least 6 months, but we do have a list squeeze coming at the end of the year so I understand the logic of passing when our other targets got taken before our second pick.

And finally, Vale Dark Sharks, or as he preferred to be called, Dark Sharts.

West Coast recruit Jai Culley says he is “stoked” to be an Eagle after being picked up by the club with the number one selection of the AFL mid-season rookie draft.

The Eagles swooped on the 193cm midfielder, widely touted by recruiters as the top talent available in this year’s crop, on Wednesday after finishing round 11 at the bottom of the ladder to secure the first pick.

“I’m f...... stoked,” Culley said. “I’m speechless right now. Sorry for the language but I am so pumped.”
Asked if he was excited to play in blue and gold, the Dandenong Stingrays player said: “Bloody oath. I’m so keen. I’m so keen.”

The 19-year-old said he was not sad to be leaving behind Coles and Charcoal Chicken for a spot on the Eagles’ list, with a move interstate imminent.

Culley, right, told The West Australian he had never visited Perth but that he’ll be on a plane as soon as the club wants, which will likely mean a trip west over the next few days.

“Whenever they need me, I’ll be there,” he said.
An on-baller who can have an impact up forward, Culley said he had no expectations of playing in 2022 but that he’ll be putting his hand up for selection.
“If I get the opportunity, I’ll certainly take it,” Culley said.

Recruiting and list manager Rohan O’Brien said Culley would likely train with the club for a week before playing in the WAFL during the AFL side’s bye in round 13.

West Coast had also had a second-round pick in the mid-season draft but elected to pass it up in order to keep a list spot available for one of their four injured players currently on the inactive list.

And then we go and drop the ball by not using pick 2

This is a welcome thread for Jai Culley, yeah? Be happy for a kid whose AFL dream just got realised. It’s not a forum for whingeing about other issues.

Welcome Jai! I’m looking forward to seeing you wearing the wings at Optus and monstering campaigners sooner rather than later.

Welcome to the best club in the land Jai.

He's bloody stoked and so am I to have him join us. Lots to love about the way he goes about it both on & off the field. Seems like such a level-headed & genuine bloke. Looking forward to following his progress in the blue & gold.

Anyone else getting Battlefield Earth vibes from Culley? I just hope his footy is better than the movie...

Our season has been completely shithouse but even as bad as it’s been, it’s still not battlefield earth bad

Can really see this kid becoming a fan favourite very quickly

Speaks well and has a great attitude

Along with Chesser we may have a couple of really good building blocks for our future midfield
