What's going on with Carlton's list

Thomas & Sidebottom for a start. Shaw spends a bit of time running off a wing too, as does the underrated Ben Johnson.
Gee Rohan, if you are going to put forward an argument, make sure you actually get your facts right. Shaw is no more a midfielder than what Harry 'Obama' O'Brien is & Johnson wouldn't have seen the midfield since Malthouse's early days at Collingwood.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas the Bay.

My issue is that I - being a non-Carlton supporter relativey unacquainted with its depth players - could not see where significant internal improvement would come from after 2011. Basically, I saw 2011 as Carlton at its peak - which, mind you, was able to be competitive against some of the best teams and perhaps deserved to knock off WC.

The key questions are:
1. Is there significant/substantial development in the list?
2. Is the development able to be realised whilst Judd (29)/Scotland(32)/Waite(29)/Carrazzo(28)/Simpson(28) are still performing?

If the answer to 2 is yes, then you should be pushing for top 6, you would think, after an aberration year of injury.
If the answer to 2 is no, then when is the best window - ie, will you be in a position to challenge in 4+ years when you'll have Murphy(29)/Gibbs(27)/Kreuz(27)/Betts(/Walker(30)/Jamison(30)/Betts(29)?

It seems as though the best players are either peaking or about to peak, but there are doubts about the support staff.

But surely Carlton fans must be slightly distressed that they didn't pick up a kpf?

They were into lynch and cloke?

Why? Cloke always a long shot...not wise to emotionally invest in long shots. Lynch would be handy no doubt, certainly not a must have at the reported price.

Lynch looks likely to cost you a 24 yo CHF who has shown (albeit rarely) that he can play the game...and we should be distressed?

Carlton clearly feel that their list as it stands doesn't need any improving. o_O. The decisions made in the last few seasons are going to send the blues back to the stone age. Say hi to Footscray when you arrive

All lists need improving but it seems Carlton are happy to use the draft this year instead of trading for club discards like Knights or Chaplin.

Why aren't Collingwood trading for a Ruckman that could step straight in if Jolly goes down? Lynch can't ruck full time, Dawes is gone and Wood is rubbish.

Plus Cloke's demands have sent Wellingham out the door

West Coast - Wellingham wanted to go home to Perth otherwise he would stay at collingwood, not sure what you wanted Carlton to of here?
Hawks - Lake may not last the 2 years on his contract and he only wanted to go to hawthorn.
Sydney - Tippett - Can't match what sydney are offering and he didn't want to come to melbourne.

Suggest a bold move that Carlton can look at.

You don't have to do those deals, but there's plenty of other options in fixing your KPF issues.

Dawes - No world-beater, but he'd bring the ball to ground for Betts and Garlett.
Hansen- Again no champ, but would be a good foil for Waite.
Gumby - Carlton don't seem keen, which is fair enough already dealing with Waite. But you have to try something, or you'll fall further behind the top teams.

Carlton best 10 mids / smalls are - Murphy, Judd, Carrazzo, Gibbs, Yarran, Betts, Simpson, Scotland, Robinson, Garlett.
I don't see an age issue there. Top shelf.
Carlton's best 10 talls KPP are - Jamison, Kreuzer, Waite, Henderson, Hampson, Laidler, Casboult, Watson, Mitchell and McInness
Add youngsters and depth like Bootsma, Buckley, Rowe, Lucas, Ball, Davies, Touey, Duigan, Warnock, Walker and the list is young and top 4 material.

That's all good and well, but which of the current top 4 sides do they replace?? Crows maybe?? Hawks, Swans, Pies will finish top 4, WCE should replace the Crows.

Funny that when we do trade we're apparently looking for a quick fix, yet when we hold onto our picks and develop our own kids we aren't trying to improve.

Pendlebury, Swan, Beams, Sidebottom, Thomas, Ball all better than Wellingham.
Judd, Murphy, Carrazzo, Robinson, Simspson, Scotland also

Blues do need a KPF if Casboult and Mitchell don't come on. Waite injury prone, not sold re Hampson.

Can you name the 8 players in front of Wellingham in the midfield?

I have pendles, swan, beams and possibly ball.
Definitely Pendlebury, Swan, Beams, Thomas, Ball and Sidebottom. That's six.

Wellingham and Blair are the next two, either order. So there's an argument he was either number 7 or 8.

He is 24 and not sure he's had a Top 10 finish in our best and fairest?
