AFLW Yartapuulti vs GWS - Round 10 @ Alberton

Euphoria aside that was a good win given the circumstance but Matilda Scholz means a lot to this side and without her it was a struggle against the 16th side at home.

Making the eight is a lot more than I thought the girls would achieve in 2024 and win or lose it will be an experience on which to build.

It is at home and Scholz will hopefully be back. Good luck girls.
Without Scholz and Dowrick the midfield was severely depleted they are irreplaceable.

Watch everyone moan about this one decision now while having NFI about all the other ones that went against us all day 😂😂😂😂

Honestly I just tune out these muppets who pick a moment to comment on for likes and clicks and ignore the rubbish we put up with for the rest of the game.

The forward line was generally poor today. Our ability to capitalise on a few key moments and opportunities saved us, because apart from those moments, we were generally quite poor.
But the delivery into the forward line was appalling. The girls have transformed their game style over the past few weeks by NOT “bombing it to Gemma”, by kicking low and to spaces for the forwards to run onto. This time someone thought that, without our best tall and our best mid, “bomb it to Gemma” was going to be productive for the first time in world history. The one mark Gemma did take was kicked into space in front of her for her to run into and she took it on her chest.

To be fair to the girls too, they played up on Gold Coast last week, they're part time players and that's a tough game to recover from for them.

Richmond played in Darwin last week and fell in a heap in the last quarter against Hawthorn.

The other day in the general Port AFLW thread I listed the 6 sides we had beaten, the scores and their ladder position, they were all below us, and the same for the 4 sides we had lost to, and they were all above us on the ladder.

I wrote that we will continue the trend and beat GWS and in the finals if we get a home final win that but lose an away final.

That was before Scholz and Dorwick became unavailable.

I will stick to my prediction if there are no injuries from today's gane and Scholz and Dorwick play. I think we can beat Richmond. We then would play the loser of 2nd Hawks v 3rd Lions.

Cant see us beating the Lions, but we are a bit of a chance against the Hawks

Yep.

We've beaten 7 of the 8 teams ranked from 11-18.

We lost to 4 of the teams ranked from 1-10.

And in our short history, we've never beaten any of the teams in the current top 10.

Who knows what the momentum of our 6 game streak, and a first home final, could do. But beating the Tigers is going to be a massive challenge for us and will require a watershed performance. We definitely aren't going all the way to a prelim or GF, we just aren't in that league yet, but hey we can dream I guess. Ultimately any final is just great for the development of this young group.

Watched to 3QT then had to go out so kept track of the score on my phone. Thought we were cooked after we conceded a goal straight after Lamb’s. Managed to get back in front of a TV with two minutes to go.

What a win!

Kirsty Lamb by herself had at least 5 high tackles that weren’t paid that were far worse than the one that did get paid that won us the game. Swings and roundabouts.

Amelie Borg was being held every time she approached the ball, then dragged off it just as she got there. That routinely happens for key forwards, but I’ve never seen it happen before to a key defender. When her opponent saw she easscould get away with it, she just kept doing it.

Perhaps the best way to improve this team is to train them to con umpires. Teams and players that know how to con umpires reliably reap huge benefits from it.

The hanging onto our players off the ball that was not paid was infuriating. Then they find one against Gemma who was playing in front that cost us a goal.

And the jumper pull paid against Levicki that cost us a shot on goal. Fair enough it was there, but not once was it paid the other way when I could see it happening time and again on the TV.

I hope the teacher's aide students give him heaps on Monday.

Something else. We teeter on the edge of being a very slow side. When we are missing two of our fastest players and replace them with two of our slowest, we are going to be shown up badly for pace.

I feel that the coaches don’t realise how slow we are. Unfortunately, our ex-triathlete is good for distance but not for speed too. We were a much slower side today than we were 3 weeks ago. If we’re that slow again next week, we’re in trouble.

I watched the game on replay with the benefit of knowing the result beforehand and thus watching with a clear head.

Taking Scholz and Dowrick out of that lineup is without any exaggeration a 4-6 goal swing. There's just no going close to replicating what they bring to the table. Scholz's ruckwork and solo clearances, Dowrick's breakaway efforts and long kicking forward. Nobody steps up to do anything like this, it just disappears into thin air.

GWS are a bottom team but they aren't a terrible team. Without our best mids they had their way with us at stoppage. Parker and in particular Beeson just monstered us. It wasn't unexpected but it was stark to notice the difference with just two players out.

What this team does do irrespective of who is out there is give great and unconditional effort. That has been something that has been evident to me from the very start with this team but results in the early years have sometimes overshadowed it. I think Arnell is a really good coach who knows how to bring a team together to perform at their best. Winning 6 in a row and qualifying for finals is an A+ result IMO.

Arnell is Hinkley confirmed.
It's infuriating watching us trying to score with that ridiculous high press, congested forward line bullsh*t. It barely worked at home against a team that had won one game for the season. GWS had an open forward line that scored against us with relative ease. We also see this with our men's A's & B's. I lost count how many times we kicked into another player, and not because of the opposition smothering the ball. It was because of the total amount of bodies around the ball. Was agonising to watch yesterday apart from the last 5 minutes. Umpiring notwithstanding, we were poor.

GWS's ability to get the ball to the outside with quick handball badly exposed us yesterday, we play that inside contested game based on intensity at the ball carrier. We couldnt shut them down for most of the game unfortunately.
