FWIW my changes for this week

Out: Riewoldt Prestia
In: McIntosh Dow

B: Grimes Tarrant Balta
HB: Short Broad D.Rioli
C: McIntosh Graham Pickett
HF: Edwards Baker Bolton
F: Castagna Lynch Soldo
R: Nankervis Martin Ross
INT: Gibcus Cotchin Aarts Dow
EMG: Ralphsmith Mansell RCD Parker

No need for wholesale changes just yet, but I expect a few to have some heat put on them heading into this weeks game. With Prestia out, I'd love for us to throw Ross back into the midfield rather than the wings, given that is where he got a lot of people excited about his future back in 2019 before injury hit. Against the Cats in the first practice match he lined up in the middle and he gives us another bigger body against the Giants big bodied mids. I'd also like to bring Dow into the mix for this week and let him start to stake a claim. The last 2 years has been tough for our younger kids, but no better time than now to start finding out if he can step up.

I was tempted to bring in someone like Miller to bolster the back line and swing Balta forward, but I don't think there is a big need for that. The problem wasn't our backline last week, but the ball being constantly delivered in the Blues F50 with little to no pressure. I want to see how our midfield reacts after last weeks poor performance as a whole. I'd also like to see us stick with the 2 tall forwards which we seemingly went away from after 1/4 time last week when we shifted Balta forward. I like the idea of Lynch being given freedom to move around and having Soldo/Nankervis remain as deep get out options to see if we can generate a bit more movement in our F50 with the smaller guys buzzing around.

Finally if he is right to go the other change I'd make is RCD for Aarts, I think Aarts Castagna Baker Edwards Bolton is one sub 6 footer too many, where as having Dow RCD Ross Graham Martin Cotchin Pickett & McIntosh is a better spread of bigger bodies

Based on Peter Burge...

- Riewoldt to miss a week, potentially back after that, will have to assess.

- Prestia, minor, running today, hammy normally a "bicep" injury and he has injured two other parts instead, so yep minor, expecting a quicker turnaround, sounds like 1-2 weeks but no timeframe given

- KMac main training this week and if gets through will be available

- Vlastuin running flat out but injury is complicated as he cannot kick fully still, progressing his kicking with a light ball and short kicks, sounds like slow going, probably round 4 at the absolute earliest

- Lambert looking to step things up even more this week, things going well as they can, has been able to tick most boxes, they now just want him to try participate in match practice this week, then will need a few weeks of backing that up, so potentially available any time from round 5 or so if things go well
vlas kicking a mini footy , must be bad !!

Part of building him back up, apparently the injury is from kicking so they are ticking boxes till it's all good. Gotta take the step by step approach as much as we want a quick fix.
our rehab team have no clue, cant believe we let inness go to the swannies

So you want to take probably our best player from last week playing the position he plays best and put him into a position he has barely played at afl level?

Mids need reinforcements but that’s just robbing Peter to pay Paul
Absolutely I do
The bloke almost won a norm Smith in the middle.
We have our first picked winger coming back this week.
It's not robbing anything.
It's being flexible and smart

Good analysis mate. :thumbsu:

I'd like to see Balta full-time forward (including when Jack is back) playing as a lead up HFF who drifts deep at times and up to the wing at other times. Use his speed, stamina and kicking penetration to much better effect than we saw last week, more in line with the Hawks pre-season game.

A bit left-field, but I wouldn't mind seeing Parker in for Aarts. They're similarly blunder prone with hit and miss disposal, but Parker has genuine pace and a little more mongrel, I don't see him as that much different to Pickett in all honesty...he's a bit quicker and has a little less aerial capacity. Can similarly pinch-hit in midfield.

If RCD's still getting over covid and a bit off-pace still, Parker seems worth a couple of games to see what he can add after a full pre-season with us.

game is over officiated, umpires should be invisible.
wont be happy if ive gotta sit through another game this week with 10+ 50m penalties.
that edwards one was ****ing disgusting, honest mistake.

Therein lies the problem, how many weeks do we give our premiership heroes before we're going to make the hard call on whether they are still best 22 or not?

You say a couple of weeks, but what if we get to round 4 and he's had 12 15 & 17 disposals but his actual impact isn't substantially better than what a kid like RCD Dow Martyn could offer. Do we keep him in the side hoping that he'll come good or do we actually make a call that needs to be made?
If he’s done the above in the next theee rounds absolutely you have the discussion.

After one round when there were a lot of guys down as well, is a premature and shocking call.

So is it a light ball or a mini footy?

Light ball in the foreground clearly filled with helium, mini ball in the background..which one is he using?

Stack barely got a touch in the reserves practice match, how could he possibly come into the AFL side?
Every account of the match I've heard suggested him and Sonsie were our best in a very poor showing. Wasn't there though, she you may be able to provide more insight?

Think it's perfectly valid to raise the issue after a poor showing in R1, otherwise you risk getting to round 4-5 and then it becomes he just needs another couple of weeks. Unfortunately as fans we're all guilty of giving too much leeway to certain players when they hit a bad patch of form, but are often too quick to call for the heads of others. IMO the best way to discuss the players is to call out any player who plays poorly regardless of their standing/reputation.

Which Riewoldt did you have in mind?
Ours is injured 🤕

Oh is he actually? That makes it easier then. Balta/Lynch with Soldo back in
Yep, broke his thumb in the first quarter. Played out the other three quarters because he's that kind of guy. That didn't stop some here retiring him tho lol (none of whom I believe we're unable to type due to their broken thumbs)

So who are the 3-4 inside mids that are banging on the door and going to replace him and the others who played inside that he was better than in Rnd 1 .
Yep he was like all well down on form.

Geez Louise.
I've often debated whether Pickett is best 22 or not, but clearly one of our best last Thursday and would send a terrible message to every player if he was demoted to sub when so many others were either poor or putrid.
