AFL Autopsy RND 5: Loss To Freo

Alot of people, dee fans included. Would've laughed at half the names in this dominating side 2 years ago.

You need a team to win any professional comp, even more so when the team involves 22 players on game day.

Buy in
Relentless Pressure
Relentless intensity for longer and harder
Hard Edge
Team 1%

go along way to success. Obviously weapons like Petracca, May, Gawn, Oliver help.

I doubt any good models had us top 8. Were super young. We beat no bodys last year on the run home and crawled into a final we had no right to participate in.

Missing a good chunk of our starting 22 and 2 best players doesnt help. The experience of Tippa, Langford, Stringer, Zerrett wouldve been handy. Even a 24 yr old Snelling.

WC showed more grit and fight than us with half a team full of WAFL players

We have 2 guns out in Stringer and Zac

And we fold like a wet deck of cards and take it straight up the rectum without a fight

That was against Norf

There 'AFL' side also showed less fight than there 'WAFL' side aswell then

If your speaking about the eagles win vs pies. Then tell me avg age and games vs us on the weekend

So after watching the 3rd qtr again there was a few things to note.

Martin centering the ball instead of shooting really changed the momentum. We should have been set up better but Redman did his best to cover and Laverde didn’t need to give away a free. After that there was a really shit run of luck with the umpires and Larvede giving away 2 more frees. In the space of ten minutes we went from 10pts behind to having lost the game. It’s pretty clear that Laverde shouldn’t be playing as the 2nd tall defender and needs help back there.

Draper was woeful at taking marks. He’s lucky he won’t be dropped.

Guelfi seemed to be only one running to create marking options through the wing. I think that was a bigger flaw than not slowing Fremantles transition. There was no one moving around and making Freo work. The one time we tried to switch out of defence we were already outnumbered and it was only Durham’s hard running that maintained possession.

The umpire dissent rule needs to change. Parish was heavily penalised for not being given a free for a good tackle. With the caveat that it’s unknown what Parish said, why would anyone want to become an umpire when you’re told to make contentious calls like that? Parish should be more professional anyway as why is he still in the centre square when the ball’s at the goal line?

He's not in the best form of his life but he's an elite ball winner. He has his issues defensively and isn't a great user by foot but he wins the ball.
What kind of parallel universe are you operating in chief? Care to quote these years for us?

Why do you keep perpetuating a clearly false narrative? What 'elite' ball winner wins 22 touches a game when they only play midfield? None, only dead average midfielders dish that up. He's not fit to scrape gum off the boots of guys like Oliver, Boak, Neale, Miller. Shiel's quick but that's about it.

There you go champ. I was mistaken about the Contested Possessions stuff, my apologies.

I appreciate your reply, but we will have to agree to disagree.

Club votes are just that - someone in the club providing feedback on a player's role for the game based on a task provided. You can rack up 100 votes in a season based on stiffling an attacking back as the "pressure forward". Hands in, bumps, jumper scragging etc. all to to put your guy off and stop him getting 30 for the game. Pats on the back to you. Much deserved for playing the role requested.

There are 1 of these in every side, so pretty stock standard. You can't have 22 as you'd never kick a winning score.

What his 3rd in the BnF doesn't do is make him a match winner for doing it. He is just doing his job. Put him in against Freo and we have shut down 1 guy that wasn't backed up by mids 'getting dirty' and exposing our B50 to pressureless delivery and their FF has a night out on us.

Snell is honest. I've seen 'honest' for many years at our club with gusy like Walsh. Peverill. Baguley. Slattery. Winton. Foulds. Flood. Bradbury. Kommer. Not out and out match winners, but do their job.

I don’t think you are giving Snelling and the role he plays and how important it is to the structure of the team enough credit.

How much grit did they show on the weekend ?

Not saying we where acceptable but the Eagles are not a good example.

What is it that he does that is different to any of the other 17 guys playing the same role in other teams?

TBH - if we had 18 players on the park playing their role... we wouldn't be in this mess.

1x negative plyer inside our F50 doesn't change any result to be any different from the first 5 rounds IMO.

It's a cumulative effect; Snelling out there playing his role individually helps the team, but does that also push a guy like Shiel to play his role for longer, or Parish to chase an extra step instead of choosing not to?

Every player out there who does play their role, puts pressure on the others to play theirs as well.

It should be lead from the top down, but it's not, so we rely on guys like Guelfi, Martin, Durham and Snelling to drive the standards on that front.

Even Langford is very structurally important as a hard-working HFF that provides a reliable marking target to help retain control of the ball.

We're missing top-line talent in the form of Merrett & Stringer, but the value of role players when it comes to setting up across the ground properly is massive. All those holes Fremantle find to kick through the zone start to dry up with each and every role player that we bring in.
