The problem for him is so far his best has just been ok, yet the bad is glaring.

Like you say that free was only 1 free kick, but it was a very bad free kick at an even worse time. What makes it worse for Setters is I don't think people were particularly surprised it was him getting pinged that way.
I reckon that's on his teammates for not communicating. Watch the replay. Saad is metres away but doesn't say anything.

Out : setters, newnes
In : cripps, Dow
Rotate cottrell, Cerra and walshy through the wings
Bring fish, Dow up on to the ball with speed.
Outside of the stoppage, get Dow to follow Brayshaw. Will keep him involved.
Would be a good week to trial at optus.

For a guy who gets hugged by another man for 2 straight hours every weekend, doesn't get as many legit frees as he should.
Not that I like to see it, but there's a reason he plays for frees out of frustration
on the flipside I reckon he gets some frees after little interference - I know when I'm surprised he gets a free, of course my protests are muted......

He was in the contest and knew who was around. Or at least he should've. Saad should've said something but Setters also should've known he wasn't exactly taking a Sunday stroll.

He does get some soft frees, he's certainly milked more than a few from the umpires. I think they've cottoned on now though.

That's the problem with exaggerating contact, once the umpires work out you do it then even with legitimate holds they're unsure if you're exaggerating or not and are less likely to give it.

shouldn't each situation be paid on its merit? that's why we have this "oh, if toby did that" stuff going on..........
It should, but if you're partially unsighted as an umpire and you see McKay throw his arms up and appear to have his movement ******ed somewhat but you're not entirely sure why instead of thinking "Well obviously he's been impeded by the defender" you might think "Look at Harry flopping around again..."

would a good, well trained, experienced, quality umpire think that? probably not - but if he/she was away sick that match we'd only have the others.......
I think they would at times. Not guessing as such but using their experience to feel what looks like a free kick and what doesn't. It gets tricky when someone is exaggerating contact and it messes with that umpires feel for the game, I think that's where the frees won't be given.

I don't get this, we must drop Kennedy because he had 71% game time, when Hewett only had 73%

Kennedy should be resting forward more, while we inject some pace through the middle

Kennedy is well ahead of Dow at this stage

Kennedy has also been more productive when Cripps is

This forum needed this sanity check

it would be an interesting exercise to stand out on the ground mid-match to just get a tiny idea of the speed, complexity and concussive aspects of a game of aussie rules footy and what it must be like adjudicating it - the majority of supporters have zero idea, myself included - but they want razor sharp, accurate decision making at all times...........

You asked for Razor sharp decision making - but no arms out next time...

I believe it is, by a significant margin, the hardest game to umpire in the world. It's why I've never agreed with booing umpires, it's tough as nails to umpire as it is plus add in the fact they've got to run upwards of 10km themselves a game, multiple times a weekend. I've got big sympathy for them, as much as we all have moments where we want to kick them up the backside.

Like in rd1 where Razor vomited on the field and was laughed at across the interwebs. It made me feel for how much running these guys do. If a player did that and kept playing they'd be lauded for their toughness, an ump does it and is laughed at.

I didn't like the addition of the 4th umpire at the time but I think I've come around to it now. Sometimes a the close umpire is blindsided and can't tell what's happening, a 4th umpire means there's at least 1 with a view of the contest at all times. Plus it should alleviate the KMs a bit. Maybe something they should re-consider.

Also they should be made full time already. It's a bit comical they're only part timers yet have such a responsibility.

Correct.

No one was calling for Kennedy to be dropped when he was having 30+ touches in his 70% game time he has had 2 games in a row where he was below his best but was still very serviceable and is a player that helps our mids bash and crash style of play.
Correct.
Kennedy was great in the weekend. Some serious contested clearance work And quick hands. Don't see what the problem is. If the base line is for every midfielder to have 30 touches a game or they get dropped then we will have a few issues over the course of the season.

This seems to be an Umpire thread topic. May I suggest it, and other similar comments be moved there so they don't get lost... Some worthy points for consideration...
