Ha ha ......... raised him several levels on my likability gauge.

Then the fact that on his return to WAFL, that he snotted an opposition agitator, further enhanced my like for him.

I have NEVER been a fan of teams that consist solely of choir boys, I much prefer a team to have one and preferably two players, that played on the edge with a bit of James Hunt about the way they went about things.

Paging Beau Watters.....you are wanted at reception.
Really surprising to hear that!

I recall you winning the Watsonia Meat Spread award for taking out Wally Sidebottom’s brother who was a pretty big unit. I think you might be in trouble nowadays. Leaving the ground, eye on the man, not a natural football act (actually it was in the 80’s) on we go ....

Actually it was Wally Sidebottom that I KO ed with a perfectly delivered shirt front.

No report, no altercation with his team mates after the event, sure in todays game I would be in trouble as my feet did indeed leave the ground.
Wally had been throwing his weight around all first quarter ( he was a big bastard and agro too ) early in the second quarter the opportunity arose and I picked him off as he was chasing down one of my teammates who had the ball, I was just looking after my mate.

After the game Wally and I shared a beer together in the Club Rooms together. :beercheers:
Neither the bump or sharing a beer would be allowed now with the new bump rules and the concussion protocol.

Different era ATG and an era that IMO was better to play in.
After every game the players of both teams and the umpires, all caught up in the home teams Members Bar to have a post game drink drink together.
It lead to good camaraderie and respect between all the players AND the umpires, a tradition thats now long gone and the game is IMO lesser for it.

Played the game hard, sledged hard but then shook hands at the end of the game and had a beer together.

You have a good memory ATG, like I said a very different era and it was a long time ago, when you were just a tall skinny **** playing Colts with the Club.

Improving on last year isnt a high bar.

A big improvement on last season is winning 6 to 8 games.
5 areas that will show major improvement

1. The win/loss tally
2. Percentage closer to 100%
3. No. of Eagles playing WAFL/Shortness of injury list
4. Playing a minimum number of youngsters and giving them a run of games in preferred positions
5. Competitive WAFL team playing a similar brand as the AFL counterparts

I would call the season a success even if the win/loss ratio doesn't jump that high if we nail some of the other parts.

Surprised that Wally's dad and a couple of the bros didn't jump the fence and have a crack at you. As I recall they were inclined to get over excited.

6. Not playing guys who were called up on a Thursday, met their teammates on a Friday and played Saturday.

The 2022 draft will be a fun one to revisit in 5 years time. The evenness from Essendons pick (5) through to our second pick (13) meant that changing that pick 5 to Bailey had it been traded to Melbourne would have created a ripple effect for a very different looking draft

Ginbey drafted very much on what he’s projected to become moreso than what he’s shown in comparison to those selected around him

Seeing him at training, there’s two things that have stood out to me
1) His frame. He’s going to be a monster when he fills out and he looks capable of having a motor to match
2) He’s a good trainer. Watching him do a fitness drill with the other draftees (a series of run throughs focusing on lateral movement) he made sure to run it through right to the end whereas the others sort of half-assed it the last 5 metres. It’s not much in the grand scheme of things but it shows a willingness to do things properly- it was also noticeable that the others were finishing off better the longer the drill went

So maybe not the most talented but he may well be the best fit for what we needed
You don't use a first rounder pick on an honest trier

Were you wearing an onion on your belt? I've heard it was the style at the time.

Did we all see, Alec Waterman joins the Beagles next year.

Bloody hope we dont pick him if theres a LTI
Its a nice story and all but if we're looking to the future and have a spot to fill I'd much rather go for someone younger that we can develop

Anybody playing footy knows that if you go in half hearted you have a greater chance of getting hurt.
It’s becoming very obvious that after 2018 we got gunshy.
Our poor little “family “ club didn’t fancy leaving “family “ behind for hubs and didn’t fancy doing the hard yards that go with being the hunted not the hunter.
We are now starting the climb again and the talent we are assembling is beginning to take on a 2018 feel.
Simmo now needs to totally overhaul his thinking.Take a leaf out of Geelongs veteran management. Rest players, use NN exclusively as a FF occasionally. We are not going to Win a premiership this year but we will surprise a lot of people. This is experiment time. We have nothing to lose!
The biggest thing Simmo MUST do on his coaching future is ditch the “ credits in the bank “ policy

Culley won’t ever leave us. A kid dragged out of the chicken shop straight into playing AFL? His training now shows how keen he is! A s**t year tends to make people forget how big WCE are on the AFL stage.

Culley seems to have a lot of friends at the club and is going on Bali trips with the boys already, I’d be pretty surprised if by mid season he hasn’t extended for at least 2 more years, assuming he looks decent on the field

Agree and I was always keen to get him onto our list, because with his athleticism and amazing marking power, he has good positional versatility.

I thought that even if he was no more that a solid back up ruck then, at the very least he has all the tools to be a dangerous KPP the fact that he in previous times played as a CHB just reinforced this notion for me.
He has an athletic profile, that is going to be fascinating to watch, morph into a quality AFL player.

The ceiling on just how good he could become with that athleticism, if he develops his ruck craft is both enticing and encouraging.

If so then the succession plan for quality rucks, that we have drafted and developed has the bat-ton handed on to the next carrier.

Gardiner to Cox
Cox to NN
NN to Barnett

Bring it on. 👍😃
Agreed he has all the tools to be something out of the box and is my favourite pick of ours thus draft💫

The only ingredient missing is the strength and mongrel to compete like his life depends on it. Kind of rules out playing KPF as he has a good leap and overhead ability when he gets a run at it but lacks when bodied up.

Watching him all year I was surprised at his hit out numbers. Very favourable- yet from the eye test was regularly beaten or negated to a nil all draw. Nic nat can teach him a few Cox tips for that im sure😍

🤞we just don't end up with a Tim English clone (with wheels) whose afraid of body contact and instead have the next dominant ruck. Its only natural.

Gaff was carrying a foot injury in the back half of last year and is noticeably slimmer returning this off-season. Whilst I agree with you about him not being suited to the coalface I do expect him straight back into the team whilst also hoping that he can reinvent himself somewhat on the wing for a faster paced gameplan.

Wait a second... this isn't a meme or a WCE boardism!

Stay in your lane campaigner, or I'll hurt you bad with hard shots to the body 👊👊✊

Yep. Big enough to play at Adelaide Oval during Gather Round. ;)

Well it's good that we didn't then
I can't see how Ginbey can be a bust (early call could be the kiss of death), his athletic profile, endurance, burst speed and has a frame that will not be out of place at AFL level. Sounds like a good kid with a first rate work ethic. I haven't seen him play other than the highlights but his upward trajectory from having not played WA rep footy to being MVP is quite an achievement. If he had a lazer of a boot on him he would not have lasted until 9 so there will always be some kind of a knock on the kid.
Having said that I think that Hewitt is the pick of the two firs rounders that I am looking forward to see next year, just a natural footballer.
Bloody great to have some young talent to look forward to developing in the next 2 - 3 years.

Club focusing heavily on running speed, which is great, but still seriously lacking elite foot skills and kicking
Hewett, Burgiel and Long are all described as good ball users, the latter two especially
