This is obviously something that'll come across as one of those "heard it from Waterman's aunty" things and obviously no way to verify either the story or whether this influenced a single injury. Just a ooh interesting that's worth passing on but totally fine to file under 'rumour at best'.

So best mate works as an agronomist just out of Perth. Basically soil tests and tells people how to grow grass and lettuce and stuff. Doesn't follow footy much but I was complaining about our injuries and he piped up with this. Apparently there's a guy who came from South Africa but made a real niche doing fields in Victoria (as in he came in and specialised in the Victorian climate, would be the first choice if they had to returf the MCG for instance).

When West Coast set up their training base and all that (MCG sized oval etc) - they paid for 'the best' - which was this guy who came in and basically did what he would do in Victoria apparently without much knowledge of the differences in WA (eg laid it on the basis of Melbourne levels of rain/general soil composition). Mate reckoned this would be something that would be grinding on legs over time. And since ovals do take a while to properly settle even if laid perfectly we both kinda reckoned unlikely a club would do anything about it for a few years at least, especially if it was the WC board feeling confident they'd hired the same bloke Collingwood or Richmond did.

Freo apparently couldn't afford him (haha but jokes on us I guess) so went with a cheaper WA local who just did a standard WA job at Cockburn and left it at that and it's gone better. Very aware it's probably quite a WA thing to be defensive of our own people in the industry of course.

It's obviously hard to blame any of that for people landing on each other's ankles but might explain a little of the wear and tear on the legs for some of our guys/maybe a bit of why we're battling to recover as well. Also totally something I could see from our club - genuinely wanting to pay for the best but missing the mark

Avge Monthly rainfalls. Quite different patterns.

To be fair to them, you and many others on this board (me included) used to roast them for giving timeframes that ended up being completely wrong (for example when a player would be stranded on 2-3 weeks for a month).

Maybe this is their solution? Bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario for them. Return to play timeframes are difficult to predict so slapping a TBC on it when they are uncertain is probably how they are avoiding the backlash they used to get on the socials.

With all of these things it’s the lack of information that’s the biggest pisser-offer. If a player sits at 2-3 weeks for a while because he’s had a setback, or because the injury hasn’t responded, just say that. Don’t just keep listing him at 2-3 weeks and let us guess what’s going on.

If a player sits at 2-3 weeks for a while because he’s had a setback
Then they get roasted for having incompetent S&C who allow players to re-injure themselves

or because the injury hasn’t responded
Then they get roasted for having useless medical staff that can't diagnose injuries correctly.

My point is, people are always going to come for them no matter how they tackle the injury report. A guy going from 1-2 to 3-4 to 2-3 to 2-3 to test (which is what they have previously done) is probably the same thing as just putting him as TBC for that whole period.

Why is 30 too old?
Shuey, Gov and Yeo should all have years left of their career but they are being ruined by injuries.
Plenty of 29-32 year olds still playing good footy. Just look at Danger he's 33 had hammy issues in the past, is a crash and bash player with explosive speed and is still out running 20 year olds.

Looking at individuals you can always justify the circumstances but looked at as a group or pattern maybe we have an issue.
Maybe its in the recovery process after games as we seem to be getting training injuries atm as well. Or could be in the rehabbing of prior injuries or in the conditioning of the body to not break down, but in my personal opinion there are too many injuries over a short period of time for there not to be something wrong.
I don't think we can discount the impact that being a Perth based team and having to fly every second week has on the body. I think there's a reason we've only had the one 300 gamer.

Makes it all the more bizarre we decided to fly back this week

is your mate, the agronomist, knee deep in clunge?

Maybe better facilities for recuperation? Travelling teams would not get access to top rate facilities.

This should not be treated as a rumour.

IMO new surfaces at Optus and our training grounds has most definatelt contributed to non contact injuries.

Not enough top soil and the sand and gravel base is hard under a thin layer of grass and topsoil. The club and Optus owners have refuted this over and over but I call bullsh!t. Those are people with a conflict of interest who dont want to admit fault or beforced into an expensive repair.

People at the club refute it because the club agreed and appointed the 'experts' so dont want to lose face.

If the club does not address this we will spend moreyears with ridiculous injury lists of ankles! knees, lower back and groin issues. Good payers wont even consider tobe traded in with such a shocking recent injury history, why would they.

Wake up Eagles. Nisbett needs to go plus others and let some fresh faces and new eyes and ideas take over who arent hiding mistakes and failures.

How long have we been in the comp and flying every 2nd week? 30 years plus.

Why is flying causing so many injuries now and not in the first 27 years of playing?

What has changed?

Yeah I get that travel has an impact over time, especially on recovery but it doesn’t really explain the last 18 months of constant injuries when we’ve always had to travel every year. Same as the dockers.

Yeos injury is like Leccas injury he did in round 1 2011. Can heal as quickly as 2 weeks and upwards of 4 weeks.

Gov only got his surgery Friday last week from what i have heard.
How can they be the same an adductor strain from a tackling action on AO, surely the grass at Lathlain caused this.
On flying it is a shorter flight almost a commuter flight and there are positives and negatives.

Are there any other's that have a done a nizzy and floated around at WC for years?
I'm all for a clean out as well but only if there's real quality to take over.
Would be great to have a new set of eyes in there, I wonder if they look at successful NFL and EPL hierarchy?
Does the CEO really need to have a deep AFL knowledge/background?
I'm more than happy for Simmo to see out his contract.
Would love to have his successor there a yr before but understand that may be a difficult ask.
Thinking of the coaches going around at the mo id prefer we go new not to long out of the game rather than one of the old guys that get ♻️, lots of pros and cons with that no doubt.
