Well that was a frustrating watch. Mixed feelings on it, happy to get the win against a side who brought the heat & went after us but we were definitely our own worst enemy at times.

The Good:

  • Winning, even though it was ugly we found a way. Take the points & move on.
  • Rankine caused damage with his touches, high impact.
  • Fogarty stealing the match, solid match without being dominant.
  • Tex brought his kicking boots, if he didn't we lose.
  • Soligo was on early, great way to bounce back but did fade a bit. Not sure I loved his bomb into the forward 50 late in the match with such a slender lead.
  • Sloane had a couple blunders but was pretty huge overall. Don't think too many of us saw him winding back the clock in the midfield but he's been pretty damn handy in there in recent weeks. Long as we don't go back to him starting midfield I'm good.
  • Rachele could have torn them apart in the first half, unfortunately he needs better vision rather than always thinking of the goals be it to score himself or just bomb it deep. Some better vision he could have exposed them & helped pile on score board pressure. Faded a lot but set up an important goal late.
  • Laird battled all day, not dominant though couldn't get the time & space.
  • Pedlar started off really well, faded a bit but showed more of what he can do & some of his desperate efforts late in the match whilst didn't cause heroics you love to see the effort late when everyone is tired.
  • Sholl was fairly solid, not amazing but not many were today.
  • Murphy was pretty solid & kept cracking in.

The Bad:

  • Jones struggled to get into it today, a shame after his recent run of form. Hopefully bounces back quick.
  • Our ball movement was very patchy today. Surprised we actually got back & pinched it late.

The Ugly:

  • Fumbles (inviting pressure & turnover)
  • Dropped marks (inviting pressure & turnover)
  • Jamming the ball down Hawthorn defenders throats all match. The worst inside 50 performance we've had this year.

The interesting thing today I guess is I don't know I feel a heap of players all played bad, nor were many outstanding. I think the things in the ugly column were far bigger issues for us than players not having a crack.

I'll be interested to see what pressure rating Hawks had for the match & what ours was. Did our pressure seem off or was it just that they really set themselves for us there? I know at one point we were 226(huge) but they were 250+(off scale)

Going to learn a lot more over the next month about where we are actually at. Regardless I'll take the 4-2 start to the year.

It's obvious we drank too much of our own bathwater after the Carlton game.

Just take the win and never speak of the game again.

We fumbled everything early and missed multiple uncontested marks under no pressure.

We clearly came out expecting it to work for us, and were given a reality check by the pressure of Hawthorn. Once it was clear we weren't going to win easily (and this was clear within 1-2 minutes) our mindset was stuffed and we proceeded to make heaps of terrible unforced errors throughout the match

A lot of players that were really good last week had absolute stinkers including Dawson who fumbled it nearly every time he touched the ball, even under zero pressure.

The only reason we stayed in it was due to Hawthorn's abysmal skills and lack of a forward line. That level of pressure on us and our skill errors would have sunk us against many other teams as early as quarter time

I really don't think that's the case the Hawks dragged us down to that level with their unbelievable pressure and tackling and willingness to scrap.

Take a Hawks win in Tassie everyday of the week and their pressure was top notch. Again, missed ( relatively easy) shots was the area of concern.
The Good - The 4 points
The Bad - Letting Jiath run amok
The Ugly - a huge whack of “ fringe “ players completely underwhelming.

Will need to watch again thought Murphy was below average

I felt like he was pretty solid & worked his ass off providing good pressure & won some key contests. Definitely not as much as the previous weeks though but not many where today to be fair. Maybe if I rewatch I'll feel differently, sometimes a look without the emotion attached you feel differently.

Not playing well every week does not mean you are expecting it to be easy. Our mindset was so stuffed we led at every break and came back when we all thought the game was done. Incredible

If you can't see the value in a win like this you are beyond help (or new to sport).

Mouthbreathers
in the comments potting our bottom 7 or 8 guys when our top 10 guys stunk it up.
I liked the start of your post until the above, without which remarks your posting would be so much better.
What's the point of making disparaging remarks about fellow supporters?

The Crows did not play well compared to the last 3 weeks --- Hawks' pressure was manic --- but, yes, the win has terrific value especially looking ahead to our next 4 games.

Good The performance of some of the kids. Soligo, Rash(1st half) Sholl,
Bad. Dawsons poorest game for us although he had a lot of possession. Also, our forward play.
Ugly. Clam complaining about all our players. ;)

we had PB tackle count by 15 for season, we won constested possessions by 11 and we beat them in clearances very well and they lead comp in differential

anyone thinking it was an intensity issue either didn't watch the game or is completely clueless about football

it was an execution problem all day and an inability to deal with the biggest heat we've been under all year, forget the ladder position

its clear we have to get better re execution under that kind of heat as it will come again next week against a gun side...and then geelong etc

Good:
Credit to Fog for calmly slotting that last goal - obviously we lose if he misses that, and the decision to go with a drop punt seemed unbelievable as he was trotting in, but the guy just backed in his bread and butter skills and it paid off. It would probably be appropriate to point out that he botched a much easier chance a few minutes prior to that though, so let’s not get carried away about the “clutch” factor.

Tex had a great game overall. Set shots looked infinitely more steady.

Sloane’s last quarter was pretty epic. *Edit - you know what, it was more than just his last qtr. Sloaney was definitely in our top 3 performers overall. Didn’t think we’d ever see him crack the 30 disposals again tbh. Huge effort.

Rankine’s goal near the end and also that piece of play in the 2nd qtr where he kept the ball in on the wing which directly led to a vital goal for us was huge too.

Soligo - despite the odd error, was very good overall today, which was great to see after his disappearing act last week.

Bad:
Josh Rachele. Honestly, he hasn’t flushed a field kick in a month, and what was considered a strength (his kicking) has become a glaring weakness. He also had 0 possessions in the all important 3rd qtr. I have no idea what’s happening with his kicking, but he needs to sort it out, fast. Confidence looks shot when kicking. *Edit: not to mention his 2 shots at goal, which were both absolute shanks that didn’t get close despite not being difficult chances at all. He also had a 3rd which was arguably a shot at goal which hit a hawk on the chest at the top of the square. Not good.

Wayne Milera - the intensity of a sloth. Pathetic excuses for tackling attempts that led directly to Hawks goals. Another game like that next week (if he survives the coaches reviewing the tape in the next 48 hours and confirming that he was taking the piss) and he’s getting dropped.

Riley Thilthorpe - no impact on the game whatsoever. If we’re dropping one player from the 22 who started today, it might just be him, as unpopular as that decision would be. Has a real opportunity today against an opponent that seemingly had no matchup for him, and severely botched it.

Jordan Dawson - an utterly shithouse game from the captain. From the moment he slotted our opening goal onwards, basically everything he touched turned to shit. Fumbles, terrible handballs, just wow. Regroup, stop thinking you’re the next Bont and play like a leader next week.

O’Brien - terrible game from ROB, absolutely no influence whatsoever. If he even took one mark all day I don’t remember it (*checks stats - he didn’t). 0 marks on a 21 degree day with no clouds in the sky and not a breath of wind, against the bottom side. Yeah, that’s not remotely good enough, especially when your ruck work is clumsy at best.

Ned McHenry - plays 40 mins, for 2 touches and 2 frees against. Bye Ned, enjoy your SANFL career.

Tom Doedee - Mr Go-to-ground was back with a vengeance today. No influence at all. Rolling around like a panic merchant. Terrible game.

Chayce Jones - here’s an idea Chayce, how about you steer clear of the media pumping you up after you strung together 9 good quarters for the first time in your shithouse career leading up to this game, and actually focus on getting the job done. Awful, yet predictable performance from a blatant downhill skier.

**Edit: I forgot to include Keays in the “bad”. Absolutely shizen game from Benny.

Ugly:
Late injuries to Laird and Hinge. Hopefully nothing too severe. Schoenberg, as much as his AFL career appears to be heading down the toilet, looks the only logical replacement for Laird, while if Hinge misses, I would expect Nankervis to debut.
