    MCG World Cup Furore

Thanks heavens for this little bit of BigFooty away from that S**t fight that is happening about this subject in another part of this forum. I am sure that many of us Australian Rules/Association Football fans this sort of debates are disconcerting to say the least. I think that the AFL...

AFL seeks compensation for World Cup disruption

I have to respond on the argument that winter is a bad time for the FIFA world cup. Soccer is primarily a winter sport all over the world. Fans in Europe are used to watch the game in the open with temperatures below 0. A Melbourne winter is nothing in comparison. It is recognised (and it...

Should we take a stand against soccer?

No. I love Association Football (aka 'soccer') but I know that Australian Rules Football will remain the main code in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. There is no reason to 'take a stand' against soccer. The interest will grow but not at the...

What British Soccer Heads think of AFL

Pfff...remember when Sam Newman came on the Footy Show dressed as a 'Socceroo Fan' but all burned and torn (because of course soccer fans riot). Well the same sort of thing in reverse. Neither the British skit or Sam were funny.

Card for seriously injured Carlton fan

I am writing this post in case some Carlton fans may help me with some information. On January 6, a friend of mine was body surfing an Inverloch. It was not heavy surf, but unfortunately he caught a freak wave that dumped him on his head. He was unconscious, but fortunately as he was swimming...

Will Soccer ever take over AFL?

I am a bit wary of comparing us with the USA. My understanding (and I am happy to be corrected) is that Americans are a bit more insular than Australians. And they can be as the most powerful western nation on earth. I mean, how can they name a domestic baseball competition (OK Canada as...

Will Soccer ever take over AFL?

Where's Pauline when you need her? Maybe we need a 'Pacific solution' for those pesky soccer people.

Will Soccer ever take over AFL?

One thing that comes up again and again in these 'sokkah vs. football' debates that regularly come up in these forums is the messianic beliefs of some of the mono-codal supporters of each code. It is really like religion. Both sides believe strongly that their code is so superior that if only...

Will Soccer ever take over AFL?

Another thing about A-League crowds. A decrease was always on the cards. I was astounded at the number of people attending in season 2 when I went to Telstra Dome to watch Melbourne Victory and I told myself 'this won't last'. I think Danny Allsop hit the nail on the head when he said that...

Will Soccer ever take over AFL?

Yes but 40 years ago there was more of an assimilationist culture which encouraged more NESB (Non English Speaking Background) young people to get into Australian Football (Cazaly, Jesaulenko, Silvagni, etc.) As I said before I believe that many of those under 40 people who go to AFL matches...

Will Soccer ever take over AFL?

Gee, another 'soccer vs football' thread, especially in an 'Australian Football forum'. These throw up always new points of views that we have never heard before! Sorry for being a bit sarcastic. OK my opinion (as a big soccer fan) is this. In football states (Victoria, South Australia...

Should we have a separate 'A-League expansion board'?

Apologies if this has been raised somewhere else, but I didn't see it. This forum has an 'AFL expansion board' but with two new teams next season and others bidding to be part of the A-League should an 'A-League expansion board' be set up as well?

Expansion Gold Coast name down to 5.

Just as an aside, has anyone read this article in Crikey? (I could not see it linked or posted anywhere else). http://www.crikey.com.au/Media-Arts-and-Sports/20080619-AFL-punt-may-fall-short-on-the-Gold-Coast.html

Expansion Newcastle: lets kill two birds with one stone

I usually stay away from these threads because inevitably they all become the same trolling stuff amongst supporters of different codes. What I want to say here though is that I was struck by Denmark AFL reasoning. When I was reading that post what came most strongly for me was the desire to...

Two very good Argentinan football ads

I am pretty sure no one has posted these here before, but someone in the Melbourne Victory forum has posted these two Argentinian commercials and they are so good (IMHO) that I would like to share them here. The first one is for the 2006 Word Cup. The caption at the end means: "Do it for all...

Expansion Lovers of English Football codes on Big Footy

I hate troll too. From whatever sports they come from. However Bigfooty has an excellent soccer section, and I would invite any Bigfooty forumites who like Association Football to go over there and debate without disturbing anyone or being disturbed.

Expansion West Sydney A-League team in 2010

You are the words of reason auspicious. There are lots of 'bi-codal' people here. That doesn't mean that watching fundamentalists from each code (ie jackmack for AFL and Vinnie and Frederick for soccer) slashing it out is not entertaining.

Expansion Aussie Rules Footy - Atmosphere at its best

No other code will threaten the dominance of football in Melbourne. Any match with traditional big team like Carlton, Richmond, Essendon etc. will always draw big crowds. I also think that this is the same in Adelaide and Perth. However when we are talking of new frontiers like in Western...

Expansion Can't all the codes just get along??

From today's article from Caroline Wilson: Can someone explain this simile? Does he means like competition between greengrocer shops? Or the type of mafia wars in the Melbourne fruit markets in the 60's? Or a fight where everyone throws fruit and vegies at each other? Or he likened AFL to...

Expansion Can't all the codes just get along??

I think what some of what Les Murray says is true. The popularity of the A-League has increased but not at the expense of the AFL in Melbourne (which has had a bumper year last season I think) Why? Because a substantial number of people who attend A-League also attend AFL. So the A-League is...

    Is Geelong interested in soccer?

Interesting article by Roy Hay (grandson of James ‘Dun’ Hay, captain of Celtic, Newcastle United and Scotland before the First World War and joint-editor of The World Game Downunder. He is currently writing a social history of Australian soccer with Bill Murray. He is a researcher at Deakin and...

As a soccer supporter (and football as well, of course) I don't think the FFA predicts that soccer wil be number one sport. Of course some 'overenthusiastic' soccer supporters (maybe with a bit of a chip on their shoulders ;)) go for this 'soccer uber alles' theme. But I don't believe so...

Expansion World Cup 2018 a windfall for Aussie Rules

A couple of points I agree that if they play their cards right Australian Rules football can benefit from the exposure of a World Cup. I know that people here (especially on the football only forums) believe that a World Cup in Australia would be disasterous for the AFL. We had a great World...

    Is Geelong interested in soccer?

I am bumping this thread because of this article that was in the Advertiser in Geelong today. Mmmmm.....still not convinced. The Central Coast Mariners come from an area which had no major teams, unlike Geelong which has a very successful and popular AFL team.
