Back to reality gents where Nick Riewoldt is our only real forward option.
If you're looking for reality you've come to the wrong thread. ;) This is a fantasy land where we come to forget about how awful our team is ATM!

...where Stanley is worth a top 10 pick!
...where we can trade Gwilt and a 3rd rounder for a late 1st rounder!!

Knightmare 's analysis of the talls from the last few drafts which includes this years tall draftees:

I like the ones from the past few years a touch more but mostly because I have less questions about them but there is not much at all in it with all projecting as very high level key forwards who all will hold down key forward posts to a high level.

Wright with his back issues, McCartin with diabetes it complicates the evaluation somewhat. Same can be said with Jesse Hogan and his back but I'm trusting they all are healthy.

To rate them purely on talent and there is so little between the group I'd go with of those you listed:
1. Boyd
2. Patton
3. Wright
4. Daniher
5. Hogan
6. McCartin
7. Durdin
8. Goddard

*I favour those with the extra height. I feel they've got the greater upside and scope to develop when the level of talent at such a young age is so similar.

Boyd and Patton are the physical forces as your Cloke/Hawkins variety forwards but I'm seeing both having greater success than the pair with both stronger contested marks then Hawkins but more accurate with their set shot goalkicking than Cloke.

Wright and Daniher are 3/4 on the condition they both are played as key forwards where both in my mind are clearly best suited. Wright I has extra height again on Boyd and Patton and he can kick as well as both if not even better again but with the slight back questions (not overly concerned) and the potential that he plays ruck instead of key forward I'd say Boyd/Patton both have the stronger careers. Then Daniher I rate slightly lower because he's got a slighter frame and struggles with his set shot conversion but the edge he has over all others is his ground level work.

Hogan and McCartin are those next two. Hogan is more a centre half forward and a really natural one. With his injuries this year there is some concern but I expect he'll be fine from next year and build from there. I lean towards the others mostly due to the extra height and with Hogan physically so advanced for his age I feel while he'll be Melbourne's franchise key forward and a great player in his own right I see slightly less upside to his game. McCartin similar story where where he's so physically developed and dominant already that I expect his upside to be slightly lower. He's more the deep forward which is the major difference to Hogan so he's not finding as much of the footy but both are very imposing and will be at AFL level also.

Durdin and Goddard I have questions about best position. Are they key forwards or key defenders? Are they number one options? They're both guys I can say with confidence will find a role forward or back and both be excellent key position players in their own right but I'm not seeing either as being quite as dominant.

Defacto don't worry mate, this year's crop is very talented, the two big boys at the front have been dominating for months and put on a show last year. Wright is prone to some less stunning moments, but has superstar potential, while Paddy is a force. I'm sure this time next year we'll be saying a lot of good things about Brayshaw, Weller, Waterman, Dawson, Miller and Petracca. There may not be a Tom Boyd or Jon Patton, but there are some elite big men on offer.

PSD gaff would be funny to watch unfold. Bigfooty would be a interesting time.

Hell yeah. I think he's copping unnecessary criticism. He could play a key role in our midfield. We really lack a midfielder that can find space and create a running option. Skills are good too.

I'd go after Gaff in a heartbeat....of course i'd prefer to bend WCE for him while we are at it.

Would give up that much needed outside run, until Webster etc build up their tanks

What have you seen from Ross that suggests he can replace Armitage?

From what I can see, despite a surprise performance early in the season and some sustained effort, Jones is now expendable as Curren and Weller can do his primary role (tagging) better than he can. His forward pressure has been excellent, but that's something based on tank and mentality; both of which a player with better skills and faster wheels can provide. Curren tags better and Josh Saunders or Eli Templeton for example can do the forward work whilst providing more spark.

Armitage on the other hand is the solid-body crasher. There isn't someone like that in our team right now; Lenny does the clearance work and Dunstan is doing well, but we can't have it all fall on him next year in the hard middle work.

Lenny Hayes is my favourite player, perhaps always will be. He gives us loads at the stoppages. But he has become a liability at times around the park, as he just cannot run with his man and can't give decent pressure when playing forward. If we were better as a team then maybe he'd be able to squeeze another year whilst playing in a forward pocket, but he's always been the high-intensity find-space-where-there-isn't-any sort, not the flash sprint into space sort.

I had hoped this year Jarryn Geary would cement a place in the midfield, Ray would play well there and Newnes take the next step.
Geary played mostly down back. Ray has predominantly played as a loose man at the back, rotating with Dempster. Newnes has played well off half-back but not done so well playing midfield.
These are still useful players to the club of course, but their experiences this season don't help the midfield depth problem at all. In preseason many posters were commenting that our wealth of depth made it difficult to list everyone. In reality we're maybe only one more injury away from having to play someone in the position through necessity rather than choice.

We can't therefore let Armo, Ray or Geary go, until a replacement is ready. So far I think only Jones is covered.

Great post.
I love Lenny but you are spot on. He is getting exposed and against the Pies he was brushed off too easily.
We got S.M.A.S.H.E.D. in the midfield against the Pies and the only bloke missing was Armo. Bring on trade time for a midfielder.

I haven't paid particularly close attention to him to be able to comment on how soft or otherwise he may be, but we could desperately do with someone who plays the sort of game Gaff does, with the ability to just run from end to end all game long and be able to hit target after target. Hopefully Eli will be able to do that eventually though, for one.

potentially shane savage 2.0 or could be a useful link player in a midfeild if all goes well

I don't believe Savage has anywhere near the endurance Gaff possesses.
more a comparison in saying he could be a a bust of a pickup or a gun, he wouldnt be considered a safe/conservative pickup
