GWS still have a 10% COLA I believe, PLUS, a much bigger salary cap than all the other clubs, as part of their start-up concessions. On top of COLA, they have an extra 1 million $ in their salary cap this year, an extra $880K next year, $760K in 2016, $640 in 2017 and an extra $520K in 2018, which would be why they haven't lost too many from their list so far and have so many signed up until the end of 2015, in spite of the fact many of them could be playing more if they were at other clubs right now. They can just keep on paying them huge piles of money for quite a while to come.

That may be so, but when you effectively have all that talent, something will have to give. Of course some won't turn out much chop, but every other team has a bunch of players paid at the lower end of the scale.

Their sheer weight of numbers mean that quite a few talented players will either have to accept not getting a game and paid less, or leaving so they can get more of both. Add to it the likelihood of another top 3 pick this year.

The AFL are trying to do the equivalent of feeding chickens steroids in order to make them grow bigger, quickly.

I am in the "trade for a key forward camp", specifically in the trade with GWS for a key forward camp. None of this years talls are standing out to me as heir to the Riewoldt crown, Wright sounds to me like a Ruck Forward, not sold on guys that tall becoming elite permanent key forwards, McCartin sounds like he has a dodgy goal kicking action and that is a recipe for heartbreak. Goddard more CHB than CHF and Durdin I don't really know much about.
However given all the GWS talls are in contract till 2015 there is no point in trading this year and getting screwed, trading only works if a player is out of contract, wants to leave and selects us. So we should delay the trade till next year and go to the draft and select the best available this year. If that is Wright, McCartin, Goddard or Durdin so be it I will trust in trout to make the right call, we will need more than 1 top end KPP if we are going to win a flag anyway.

I fear for the poor kid who we end up selecting as the expectation that he will be the next Riewoldt will be hard to bare and almost impossible to live up to.

Are we looking for the next Riewoldt or are we after a Brown or Cloke type power forward?

I went over to Dandy on Saturday and watched the Stingrays V Jets game. Tom Lamb from the Stingrays looked very impressive, more in the Riewoldt mould than the power forward mould. He appeared to play a combination of ruck-rover, CHF and a little bit at full forward. He is about 193cm but he is only 17yo (18 in October) so he might still be growing. He isn't skinny by any means but he isn't solidly built either. What was most impressive was his athleticism and his agility for such a tall player and his massive leap. He had a nice kick on him, too. Apparently he was BOG for the AIS team over in Europe which adds to the appeal.

If we could trade in a Boyd or Patton type in the next year or two and compliment a power forward such as that with a Riewoldt type like Lamb, then we could have the best of both worlds.

Ultimately it will require a two of very good players to replace the Riewoldt/ Kosi combo in the long run.

We've talked about him.

Brian hates him coz he was expelled from Hailebury (i'd do almsot anything to get out of there too!) General consensus was that he was a knob...bit harsh IMO.

Sean McLaren says hello. Plays that role well, positions smartly in the ruck also. Nice size and has agility + ability below the knees.
Good bit of aggro too...

I'd love to pick up Durdin with the 1st rounder, McLaren with the 2nd and then some silly pace.

Don't think Brian is of that opinion anymore. I definitely am. A knob who doesn't work hard enough going the other way, especially for a bloke with good endurance. Roo runs bloody hard both ways, sets a great example that way. Tom Lamb undoubted talent, just lacks intangible values.

What's your top 10 looking like now, Rahul?

LIKELY early draft pick Sam Durdin will make his return from injury to play for West Adelaide in the Foxtel Cup on Tuesday night.

Durdin has not played a game yet this season after undergoing surgery on a broken thumb in February, but he is set to line up for his senior SANFL side when it opens this year's Foxtel Cup competition.

The 17-year-old is seen as a possible top-five draft pick given his ability to play key position at both ends of the ground, and he is likely to settle into a defensive post on Tuesday.

i think the first side to find that type of player will have a massive advantage. allows you go in with 3 genuine fwds and not compromise your fwd line with a semi ruck semi fwd

The chaplain for Westies is a former student of mine. I'll ask him what he thinks of Durdin's character. It seems that's what our recruiters value most.

Draft top 10 or rankings top 10? Rankings will change this Thursday, but is currently looking like this -
Wright
McCartin
Petracca (huge concerns regarding his early birthday and body)
Lever (could change)
Brayshaw
Durdin (injured, should rise)
Smith
Goddard
Waterman
Dawson
Of those not in the top 10, Lachie Weller the one most likely to rise a lot. I love what little I have seen of him, in fact that little bit would rate him ahead of many in the 10, but unfortunately I haven't watched him enough, should move ahead at Champs. He's so smooth and seems confident, love a player that backs himself in.

i would not be opposed to taking an elite CHB in Lever (say at 5 or 6 if we ended up there)
Natural leader, hard at ball & man. 193cm, will play at 90ish kg eventually.

Lever & Dunstan would make an exceptional Captain/Vice combination!

I was after your personal ranking and opinion seeing as it's very early on on the piece and no one knows for sure how the clubs are ranking the prospects.

Geez, it's jam-packed of talls. Wright, McCartin, Durdin, Lever and Goddard all tall enough to hold a key post. How do you rate the top talls this year compared to the last few drafts (Daniher, Hogan, Patton, Cameron, Boyd etc)?

This from him:

He seems like a good guy. Trouble with most of the real young ones who get talked up is it goes to their heads pretty quickly.

Note, he's not saying that this is what's happened to Durdin, just that he's at risk of that happening, given the talking up he's getting.

Not a chance of getting a good return for Gilbo if we decide to trade him after the latest injury news, imo.

It's a shame because we already have little to work with in regards to trade stock. I don't think we'll see much movement from us at the end of the year. Maybe some pick upgrades if we can manage them.

But his grandpa was a premiership player for us wasn't he? That means he can be a huge dick and still be welcome to me.

Nick Davis says hi. Didn't seem to be a real thing when they had that guy running around.
