As I said their supporters deserve better so for their sake I hope he stays. However unless they show some serious improvement in the next two seasons he may very well leave, I don't think Roos has improved them that much. For as many good wins as they had last year there was some awful performances, I mean we beat them twice. If he hasn't re-signed by the start of the 2017 season they'll be getting very nervous. Hopefully for the fans sake they'll start playing finals footy in the next couple of years, no one should have to watch their team be so crap for so long in this modern era.Don't you think they've copped enough for tanking though? That happened quite a long time ago now and they finally look to be heading in the right direction. One quick look over at the Melbourne board and you see how much the guy means to them... I would hate to see him leave.
I reckon Melbourne have possibly the best crop of young "inside mids" in the comp (4 of them taken in the top 4 of their respective drafts and Viney bid on with pick 7) and when you add in Jones and Vince for the time being (plus Vandenberg, who you didn't mention), if they lose a clearance or a contested possession count in the next 10 years they are doing something very wrong! They have recruited very midfield centric and bought in a mass of other teams rejects. They have some very good development prospects especially in Brayshaw and Petracca. I like Clayton Oliver and Dom Tyson should be a good get as he gets older. Salem looks pretty likely but then right now Brayshaw and Viney are the only two kids that look like definite players. We have Dunstan and Ross and possibly Acres with similar potential and guys like Newnes who may end up in the middle. I'm not to concerned with the Dees even having the better long term mids as we don't really know where either will end up yet. We also have Armo, Joey and steven as top flight seniors who are probably better than Jones and Bernie Vince.
That Roos game plan won't work as well for the Dees as it did for the Swans as the MCG has far more space than the SCG & it's far harder to shit things down & make it a slog. IMHO they just won't win the same number of games each year as the Swans did at home, because that game style is not suited to the wide expanses of the G. They'll need to tweak it & add more offensive flairI reckon Melbourne have possibly the best crop of young "inside mids" in the comp (4 of them taken in the top 4 of their respective drafts and Viney bid on with pick 7) and when you add in Jones and Vince (plus Vandenberg, who you didn't mention), if they lose a clearance or a contested possession count in the next 10 years they are doing something very wrong.
Will probably play a very Sydney-under-Roos style of game going forward, where they try to make it stoppage after stoppage and look to beat teams with their superior inside abilities and Hogan up forward (if he stays), with Weiderman.
...and despite having a red hot ruckman in Gawn, Melbourne may be restricted in emulating Sydney's gameplan because of the new out of bounds rule. Sydney relied heavily on maintaining possession. They would pass it around, trying to create a break in the opposition defence then hit up a forward target. Melbourne could do that, but Sydney's option B was always put it out of bounds. They relied heavily on a dominant ruck and quality inside mids to gain clear possession and start the whole boring slow progress forward again. Without option B (putting it out of bounds) that game plan is much more volatile. That Roos game plan won't work as well for the Dees as it did for the Swans as the MCG has far more space than the SCG & it's far harder to shit things down & make it a slog. Any interest in Brisbane's Sam Mayes?
22 soon, 188cm 86kg, been played as a small defender and small forward at times but is a natural ball-winning wingman.
Has put off contract talks with the Brions, and is most likely to go back to his native Adelaide, but a former first rounder; worth a shot?
Excellent player Sam , unfortunately think he is going home .
I know the saints really liked him in his draft year, but think the Crows will get him.
So clubs are pissed we can bank the money saved from the players being outside the salary cap? Shouldn't have voted against us getting a top-up player then
Doesn't make sense P66. 1.5 million isn't 5% of the SC.
If we are using 95%. Is about 500 to the100% mark.
The article we can take the 250 off the 95% and use it next year.
So instead of being 105% of the SC next season, we will effectively be about 107%
This is what the other clubs are railing about.
Firstly I think with the Carlisle ruling we we will be under 95%. Secondly we aren't using promotional money outside the cap because we struggled to 95% and thirdly we aren't using the veterans list outside the cap. I reckon that equates to close to 1.5 million. Then there is fisher retiring and maybe another older well paid player and even further a couple of well played players are front ended like our best paid player jack Steven. I don't think it helps us at all. I doubt we are ready to use more than 100% of our cap. I reckon that is madness if you only won about 6 games the previous season. Yes I know we could hugely front load but it's a risk I hope we don't take yet. Leave it for those close to winning the gf

What it can allow us to do is rejig some contracts and bring some money forward from say 2017/2018 to get us up to 95% this year. Can only help us when we are challenging.
Or like Sammy Hamil where they can't play out their contract termYeah you can just rewrite contracts. We could tear up Jack Billings contract and replace it with a $5 million over 5 year with $3 million in his first year for example. It just allows you to have extra space, it can back fire like it did with Ball who was used to getting big money and didn't want to take a cut but it can't be a bad thing.
I think Hurley has always wanted to play up forward too. Could be a way to entice him to the Saints like Richo telling Carlisle he will play him in defence. The only thing is the prospect of having to deal with Dildoro again!!!! Or is Hurley going to be a free agent?Just watched highlights of Michael Hurley - he would be so perfect for us.
The prospect of Bruce, Hurley and McCartin should be enough to bring a smile to any Saints supporter.
Hope Bains & Co are working overtime on this one.
