Then grab this bloke as a mature aged rookie:

And go with Laverde & Shirley
Shirley, you can't be serious?

Jack Steele looks the goods. We could have had him took McKenzie 2 picks ahead of him.. Similar type player.. Too early to judge dmac but Steele looks bloody good from that draft.
GWS academy boy so they probably would have matched the bid mate

We should target Weitering and McDonald as key backs. Start working on them now. In the meantime , we should stop drafting half backs and forward pockets and look at getting in another tall forward and a couple of tall gun midfielders.

Jacobs dad did play for the Saints, there's a fun fact most of us didn't know.

Anyone just see Kelly hit Scully going inside 50? Would kill to see delivery like that into our forward 50

I agree entirely.
One might use a different game plan when playing kids because they are prone to making errors.
The strict adherence part implies that the squad selected is expected to be pretty reliable (as error free as can be expected of AFL players) and to my mind indicates the next step in the evolution of our team. It implies that we are not just getting games into kids any more - that we are playing to a game plan in which every player is expected to perform up to the highest standard. It probably means that fewer kids will "get a run" - instead they must learn what the expectations are and perform to those in the lower levels before being promoted - they truly have to earn their spot.
I watch GWS and Melbourne and see two teams laden with young talent and I fear we are nowhere near them yet.
We need to trade for top 15 picks this year, make a hard decision and load up with some more elite over the next two years. Who we trade I have no idea, but it needs to happen.

Who do you propose we trade?

Well if you want a top 15 pick I cant think of anyone who would get that apart from guys we would be mad losing. Even a Hickey or Longer would struggle to get a pick like that. We just have the wrong age group to get that pick.

there is no way we are going to match either of the teams with top end tallent unless we bottom out for the next 2-3 years. We have goddard, mcartin , billings, dunstan, freeman, acres, Gresham and longer who were all young players top 21 in the draft. Thats 8 players who will make up a fair amount of our future team. I think we have a strong core group of players now that we can build a team on without ripping players out for the sake of a couple of position in the draft.

I don't think we have much trade with to do that, and I do hope we keep whatever top 10 pick we do end up with as you are right we do seem to be behind those other bottom clubs in regards to young talent

Looking on the bright side BS, you could be underestimating the ability of those two teams AND Gold Coast to somehow still manage to **** it up.

Team of champions vs Champion team and all that.

Couldn't agree more

For the last few seasons the dees have been loading up on top end mids... Weve been loading up on top end talls. We picked up a few top end mids too along the way but no where near the likes of the dees or pies.
IMO we'll be better off in a few years for it but right now, while our talls take time to develop those other teams will see more quality through the middle.

my fear is our rebuild is similar to richmonds. full of soldiers but not enough elite players, lacking size and grunt in the midfield. compared to melbourne and GWS that are a geelong/hawthorn rebuild

I guess we'll just have to make do with Billings, McCartin, Bruce, Goddard, Carlisle, Gresham, Lonie, Dunstan, Acres, Freeman, Longer, Ross, Sinclair, Newnes, MacKenzie, Webster, Membrey, White, Rice, Templeton, O'Kearney, Pierce and co. until we get in some actual 24yo and under talent- to compliment the older guys for the time being and then the likes of Steven, Armitage, Roberton and Savage.

Gee that's some green grass over there!
