Does anyone think we will regret the swap of pick 5 for carlisle and pick 18? Parish just looks exectly what we seem to be lacking at the moment with outside run etc.
Could just be me forgetting how good carlisle actually is
We wouldn't have been able to get Parish even if we had kept pick 5. Also after seeing the struggle Chips had against a monster forward Carlisle is EXACTLY what we need!!!

Edit : sorry to be repetitive. Just saw the other posts re Parish.

Anyone know what the opposition side was like in the vfl practice match yesterday? 15marks 25 disposals and 7 goals for paddy.

any one else worried that we seem to have a thing for drafting flankers and trying to turn them into midfielders?

"Very smooth natural forward player with very good-uncanny goal sense and play reading ability - can play in a pocket as a 3rd tall marking target or in a ball winning, roaming high HFF roaming role. Has some flair/X-factor about him."

Say hi to a skinny young 2009 prospect called Nat Fyfe.

So... Not really, no.

do we think freo were planning for fyfe to be a midfielder or did it just turn out that way?

(Most) ruckmen aside, I don't think anyone's pigeonholed to a set position anymore in modern footy.

I was certainly no AFL talent, but even I went from a skinny rover, to a nuggety (fat) back pocket, to a nuggety (less fat) back flanker, to a rugged centreman*, to a skinny wingman as I grew, matured and changed shape.

And that was years ago.

*or inside mid, these days...

Now you are just a fat plonker

Like who?

Ross, Acres and Dunstan were all midfielders when we drafted them. Billings played mostly up forward but I have no doubt he'll become a midfielder. Gresham is a midfielder.

All other guys that we drafted as flankers I expect to stay as flankers predominately e.g. McKenzie, White, Rice, Newnes etc. (McKenzie was a midfielder and may end up spending time in there but I think he's best suited to a HBF.)

Some of those guys might spend time in the midfield but I expect our midfield to be Steven, Armo, Billings, Dunstan, Ross, Acres, Gresham and whoever we can draft/trade in the next couple of years.

Pretty happy with our pure mids atm especially if we continue to get 60 clearances a game.

Flankers are essentially mids anyway. I'd hope we continue to target flankers as long as they can run all day & have a natural forward game.

ross was a genuine inside mid

but acres and dunstan certainly were not. acres played across half back and half fwd flank in the champs where as dunstan was a half back flanker. acres at colts level spent time in the center against very inferior opposition, which is not a good indicator of if he is a midfielder

i'll let barrels speak for gresh

armitage and ross are probably the genuine mids that came through (outside of gresh) where as the other seemed to be partial entities that we are trying to push into the role. my worry is this is different to say a cripps, brayshaw, oliver, wines, viney etc. that were genuine midfielders

its a fair point, i'm just starting to sense a trend where the genuine mid-fielders are the ones that are progressing and dominating early on. looks to be a return back to how football was before with the harveys, buckley, voss's of the world. so my worry is our midfield in 2 years time wont be as potent as some of the other sides coming up around the same time

Dunno mate, seems like just about whenever Acres plays in the centre for Sandy he has a day out.
