RICHMOND star forward Brett Deledio is resigned to the fact his name will be linked to ongoing trade rumours. Deledio, 29, whose season ended abruptly after an innocuous calf injury in Round 17, dismissed speculation he had met with North Melbourne officials as “hearsay and rumour”. “It’s something that I don’t need to really stress about too much,” Deledio said. “I’ll get away from the city for a little while and we got plenty of weddings coming up to keep me distracted. “I think (trade speculation) is all part and parcel of the game really.”
Deledio told manager Anthony McConville on Wednesday he had not “caught up with anyone” without his knowledge. “Look it (North Melbourne link) was news to me, but all hearsay and rumour I think at this stage,” Deledio told RSN.
Former Essendon champion Tim Watson last month said Richmond should follow St Kilda’s rebuild blueprint and trade Deledio. The Saints offloaded stars including Nick Dal Santo, Brendon Goddard and Ben McEvoy to secure early picks in the draft. “They’re going to have to make some really tough decisions and I think one of the decisions that they should look at is (Brett) Deledio,” Watson told SEN.
“And I think that can be a win-win for the club.” Deledio managed just 11 games this year after a quadriceps injury stalled his start to the season. He struck form midway through the season but his campaign ended last month.
“I don’t think I’m injury prone,” Deledio said. “I’ve just had a bad year and I feel that I’m on top of my calf strength and Achilles strength.” Richmond has modified Deledio’s training program to reduce the risk of further injuries.
