He barracked for North as a kid, let alone his father's connection with the club.
If he leaves, I'm backing he will go to the Kangas. Good for them I'd say.

I think he is very gettable. I am rarely optimistic about landing a big name, but the worlds are aligning. My reasons are as follows:

-GWS can't fit everybody in. A big fish is leaving again, and they know it;
-Kelly is the likely piece. Out of contract, will cost a truckload in cap space to keep. I think their cap issues are being undersold on here, they simply don't have the cash. In what scenario do they possibly keep him and stay under the cap? Is he going to play for under $400K a year? Unless they plan on trading out Shiel or Cameron, or the AFL comes up with a new special GWS cap allowance, then he has to be gone. My understanding was that their cap was completely stuffed.
-If he is coming to Melbourne, who can afford him? Not many. North, Blues and us I would say. That is literally it. Nobody else has the money or picks to satisfy a trade.
-Of those 3, North are actually the worst prospect IMO. They are in terrible shape. Only just starting a rebuild now, they could be down the bottom for another 6-7 years. Blues are terrible now but have some good youngsters coming through. They will be far superior in 3 years to North. North is a straight up disaster waiting to happen. A decade of mid-table mediocrity is about to catch up to them.
-His best mate is Jack Steele.

Bottom line, I think we are in the front seat. I rate us a better than 50% chance of landing him. No inside knowledge, just gut feel. The timing is absolutely spot on. We are the only scenario (outside of the Blues) that makes any logical sense. This is the first time I have ever been confident in landing a big name in my entire life. If we go hard enough, we will get him. Pick up Rockcliff as well (also gettable), and 1 of Acres, Steele, Gresham takes a big step up next year and/or Armo returns to form then I think our midfield would be as good as any in the league. Steven, Ross, Kelly, Rockcliff, Acres, Steele, Montagna, Gresham.

We could legitimately contend for a flag with Kelly and Rockcliff added to our current side. With Roo and Joey still playing, our window could be wide open next year.

god damnit makin me log in.

Roberton has gone from averaging 19 touches last year, to 25 this year. Webster averaged 15 last year, 20 this year.

Because they don't have to go third man up, they can wait at the drop and run it out.

Brown and Carlisle have been great.

Or those guys have to get hold of the ball because the two key backs just stop their man and not much else?

What would happen if Kelly went in to the draft ala Luke Ball??? If he was picked with the #1 pick would he have to go? and be paid a draftees salary????

I think GWS accepted slight 'unders' for Steele but were happy to complete the trade because of the professional way the two clubs negotiated with each other.

St Kilda never publicly made their desire to trade for Steele, and Steele never declared his interest in St Kilda, until after GWS completed their season. I think that is very important.

A new franchise like GWS craves respect from their football peers. They know they will lose some elite talent, the smart clubs will deal courteously and confidentially.

GWS doesn't like a club like North leaking to the media that they intend to recruit one of their best young players on a huge long term contract during the season. I'd be ropable if another club did that to us. It is disrespectful and intended to destabilise.

If Kelly wants to return to Melbourne to play his football there is one less club that can win his services.

If Kelly nominates North he will get to North irrespective of what GWS says. Look at what they said about Tom Boyd the days after the Bulldog offer.

Very little, if anything, can done once he nominates.

No Ball nominated his price so he'd just say he's not moving for under $1 million a year and not attend medicals for the clubs he doesn't want to go to. Ball got away with it and the AFL obviously saw nothing wrong there.

Yeah they all say that but it always gets done. He's really just freaking out because every time a club comes in and offers huge money to guys who aren't in their best 5 players it's another huge chunk of their cap gone for the next one.

Yep, precedent has been set. Nothing you can do about it.

Once a player nominates a club and they're out of contract, it's pretty much a done deal.

If we have any chance of getting Kelly we must get him. Even if we have to pay him 10 mill over a decade. Be brave & don't **** it up.

I don't want to pay him that kind of money but agree we need to do everything to get him, he's a much better player than Whitfield.

I've never been so confident in a player becoming absolute top shelf elite. He's even a chance to win the Brownlow this year, he's clearly been GWS's best player with Toby Greene second imo.

Also, I read somewhere that with the new CBA coming in the average salary will see an increase of about 70k pa. By my estimates paying Kelly 1 mill a year is like paying closer to 800-850 pa on the current agreement. We could also front load the **** out of his contract & pay him 1.5 a year for the first three years or so. Depends if we have any other players/FA's in our sight.

Not sure where to type this, but I wouldn't mind seeing Billings play Montagna's role in defence when Joey hangs the boots. He doesn't have to be offensive weapon forward of centre, he could still be one the back half. I just don't think he is a pressure act kind of guy, which you need in the forward half. I think he would do well playing the Hodge role for the hawks.

I've been saying this for over 12 months. We need to get Jack away from congestion not towards it. This way we can utilise his weapons - kicking & decision making skills.

Agree but we don't want to find a heap of our kids come on but we need to push them out like Sydney did to get Buddy and Tippet. There is a heap of pressure coming from getting a contract of that size. Boyd has probably scared a few off taking the big contract, if he comes he will justify it as wanting to get back to Melbourne so offering him plenty but just over what the Giants would pay and a performance based extras while selling him a bayside dream might just get it done.

he's not awful I'm overstating it but he doesn't offer what we need IMO. They way we played last year was much more mobile and attacking from deep guys like Roberton are needed to move the ball out for the two lump backs who are really just stoppers who neutralise the talks but the way footy is played now so much of the scoring comes from the smaller players in the forward line. He has very good passages but it's not really giving us anything better than we had. We need to defend from the midfield still and require all our forwards to double back to sure up the defence still so I don't get what they add other than height.

Brown & Carlisle in the team is why Roberton has played as well as he has.

Couldn't disagree any more. Brown has been fantastic & the backline has improved every week. The midfield on the other hand...

He won't be able to defend at all.
Rather him forward of centre if not in the middle
