I'm hoping it's this. But hoping he is coming to the Saints still.

my take on it is, fyfe is down on form and maybe has concerns his form isnt going to get back to the heights of 2015, especially with the side he has around him and how the eagles basically tagged him out of the game on the weekend

i think his west australian management is pulling the same tricks they did with lachie neale i.e. leak to the media he was going to melbourne

blame it on the saints. the reality is the saints board would not know who we are after. the only ones who would know of any potential offer would be peter summers (the pres), the ceo, the football boss, the senior coach, ameet (contracts/tpp), fyfes management and trout (list mgmt). that stuff is not discussed at a board level

plus we've never leaked stuff before. freo have (mccarthy/JJ/mcgovern). we havent.

freo want to sign him ASAP, i think if they (his mgmt) leak he has a 1.5m offer from the saints, they'll come in soon and and be like for 1.3m he stays. paying massive overs for what he's actually worth. probably 200k-300k too much

tactically it makes sense for us to shut our mouths, especially if we want to acquire other players/re-sign others

makes no sense for freo to leak it

makes sense for his mgmt to leak it if he wants to stay at freo

Pretty obvious we got a little contract happy last year. Some of those blokes were putting in effort but just are not AFL standard. We whinge that in hindsight we couldn't carry Robert Eddy, Fiora, Clint Jones etc. those average players, well if we're being serious we can't carry Wright or Holmes. Skills will just kill us. The American experiment was fun but it's over. And Lewis Pierce would want to show more. He's 22 now going on 23 and was drafted in 2012. None of that "ruckmen take time" argument anymore, if he's not showing a decent amount of promise before the year is out he has to either be traded for peanuts to a ruck deprived club or delisted. It's the pointy end of list management now, no time for more than 1 or 2 project players.

You don't recall for months the speculation and figures bandied about for those players? The Adelaide fans had signs put up asking Danger to stay when the rumours intensified and journos where running similar articles to fyfe.

1.5 is about 1.2 in today's money pre-eba. I think contract length can be the riskier bit ie the North Kelly offer

As I said. This rumour came about a month earlier then I anticipated.

But it can only be good for us as it means freo need to confirm it or re-sign Fyfe. We will get an answer one way or the other.

Dont know how many times I have to say it on this board..

1. Minchington and Wright performed to a standard that deserved a 2 year contract extension and ensured their safe position in our squad in the future. Recognition needs to be provided where its due.

2. If it comes down to it, a player will be moved to the rookie list (if it still exists) to make enough room on our list come the end of the year with drafting and trading. We have done this in the past and we will do it again, just as other clubs have.

This strategy is widely used in the industry and is far more equitable and appropriate than paying someone out. We did it with Saunders and Schneider and we will do it again if necessary.

No hoohaa regarding the extension of those boys contracts and it won't hamper our pursuit of talent come the end of the year.

I agree with it all mate but I will say that the board does get notified depending on the enormity of the situation. All nods of captaincy at the Saints are ratified by the board and although we haven't had a massive signing like this in quite a while, I'd assume if Fyfe had a contract laid out to him by the Saints it would not just be a playing contract type of offer but an all encompassing media/life after footy deal (godfather offer) that I think would need to be ratified by the board at some stage. He'd become one of the main faces of our football club.

Like I've said all along I highly doubt he will move but things change in footy and if this has any credence to it then I think it's worth having a discussion about.

The question I have is it FA or draft picks. Thinking at 1.5m it will be as FA which means we have up to three draft picks to use this year. It fits with what Stavro said ages ago. I'm an optimist so I think it's legit.

I wonder if we can still afford Kelly/Whitfield shelling out all that cash for Fyfe?

Saw a rumour from BS that we are trading our Hawks pick this year for Brisbane's first pick next year. The only reason we would do that is to spread the age profile of our list and assuming Brisbane will be bottom six next year.
