McGovern was mostly rated on potential. His ceiling is enormous. He just wasn't able to put it all together for us.

Having said that, our win-loss record with him in, and out, of the side is stark.

Can we really read too much into the McGovern win loss record?

In the past two years we are 19 wins, 1 draw and 7 losses (70%) with Andy Otten in the side. We went 10W, 10L (50%) with him out of the side.

No one has been suggesting we are a much better side with Andy Otten in it

I'm not super bullish on our 2019 chances yet. I think we bounce back into finals but as of right now we haven't tangibly improved our team via trade week. Whereas most of our competitors have with a big recruit or making the most of a bad hand.

Richmond have added one of the most promising KPFs in the league.
Collingwood brought back a favourite son in a very similar move to us with Gibbs.
Melbourne whilst losing Hogan, have added May who will fill the Talia role for them allowing Lever to just do what he does best. Along with KK who is a handy best 22 piece.
Essendon gained Shiel and they were the best team outside of the 8 this year, not us.

Despite that I still think we can easily jump the likes of Port, North, Hawthorn (despite their massive list changes), Geelong and Sydney.

I know big name recruits wasn't the focus of our year this season, but I am worried the end result is going to be us left in the dust in terms of the pointy end of the competition.
Think you'll find that a fit Smith, Crouch, Sloane and even Walker make a bigger difference to us than bringing in an overpaid recruit...

Brad Crouch is a hobbled husk, Matt Crouch is a solid workman along with Seedsman and Luke Brown, I like Jenkins and what he does but he's not a super forward, Walker has been far too hot and cold for far too many seasons, Smith is demonstrably important to the side and I'd have him pretty close behind McGovern depending on how the knee holds up, Doedee has played one season as a loose third defender, Jacobs was a top 5 ruckman in the league once upon a time but these days not so much.
No idea... what an I’ll informed pile of dribble...

True, but theres a caveat.

Every year we have someone pop up and play completely above a level they have previously. This year it was Doedee and Milera.

All it takes is for a young midfielder to do the same, or a young forward.

For sure. And I expect both Doedee and Milera to step up again. Maybe the thing that is missing from my imagination is actually Milera going into the midfield and having an AA year. But we need a midfield that can at least break even with the best in the AFL. The thing that worries me is look at a club like Collingwood. Look at their midfield. Even a club like Brisbane will have gone past us unless those players I mentioned turn back the clock. There are just so many teams with really strong midfields now. I just don't think there is any room for chinks in our armour. Very confident and happy with our back line. I am either completely depressed, or exhilarated at our forward line, depending on which Tex Walker turns up next year.

Then our midfield. We have shown just a year ago that we have a group of guys that on paper can match it with the best. But we just didn't see even a hint of that all the way through the last 12 months. Even right up until the end. I kept waiting and waiting. Thinking this week its all going to click and we are in with a chance again. But I saw nothing to be optimistic for next season. Brad Crouch will be a huge in and hopefully, like you say, a new player can come from nowhere and take us to that level.

Why wouldn't you want to go on a working holiday to the gold coast with your mates for a couple of years, before you come home and get to the real business.

True. I just hope that he can be developed properly. On the positive side, he will get plenty of AFL games. But on the negative side, he will spend the next 2 years training and playing with a really poor group of players. Would have been great for him had May stayed for one more year. He could have learned a lot from a player like that. Hopefully Dew and Francou get the best out of him. It could be worse, he could be going to a team coached by Bolton.

Whilst there is an element of troll in this tweet, theres no doubt we will have a crack.

I still think we would be negligent to give away our 3 firsts this year for 2 or 3, perhaps we can do 2 and next years first.

Suns are more likely to want to do something along those lines

Good on Kane. Doesn’t actually mean anything.

Doesn’t mean the Gold Coast have any intention of accepting any offer we have made. That’s assuming we have even made an offer.
We will do.

Way too positive about going to the Gold Coast and going with a fellow SA draftee.

If they pick him I'm predicting homesickness by the end of next year. Straight swap for our 2020 first rounder.

Why would they tell Kane Cornes?

So Port can go "All In" - 5,10,15 and a future first for 2 and 3.

Then we throw in 21 as well.

Despite them having slightly better picks, we have more to give away.

It’s like those tweets saying we walked in with the Saints.

Whoop - dee - bloody do.
Yeah I dont tend to believe the tweets as such, but that doesn't mean the premise of them is wrong.

Weve spoken about these kids all year, weve met with them and we were also at the forefront of the inclusion of pick trading.

Whether we can get a deal done is another thing, but we will definitely be enquiring.

If I were Gold Coast I wouldn't trade any top 7 pick for any combination of picks 8+.

Their list has plenty of B-C graders but desperately needs top end talent. Desperately.

They really don't need to take a ton of later high picks. Nailing 2, 3 and 6 will set them up and begin their rebuild. They don't need to and can't take a bunch of later first round picks in their current position
