Is there a stat for where he takes wickets in an innings? Not simply the number bat, but what the average number of balls bowled in the innings when he takes his wickets?
Not sure. I'm going off the sources referenced.
Do you mean at what stages in an innings ie 7th over, 20th over etc?
Holding commented earlier that he'd be happy if the first 5 balls of his over went for 20 runs, with a wicket on the 6th ball. He explained: that = 1/20 which might become 5/100, which he said he'd have taken every game.
Some posters in here would whinge that batsmen scored too many boundaries off him! :D

Day 4 will be set up for Mitchell Starc. One of the most valuable things he brings to the table is his ability to rip through a tail and get wickets in quick succession. If the Aussies want to win this test match, Starc will need to skittle them quickly, doesn't matter about how many runs he gives up. On the day 5 pitch, it will hopefully be Nathan Lyon's time to regain some form and take 4 or 5 wickets - similar to what he did in Edgbaston. Bowlers, like Starc must go hammer and tong and leave nothing out there, because this is our best chance to win the ashes in England in some time (As Ponting said)

They really need to be starting early to make up the overs and I dont see anything in the playing conditions that says they have to make up the overs at the end in England. Its illogical to go off for bad light and think you'll have the ability to make up the overs at the end in future days.
I get their reasoning because of the late sunsets in the UK, but if you plan to make up half an hour in the morning and it's raining then you get a second crack at making up the time in the evening. Now, you just get one chance.

To be honest I think the ICC needs to look at changing the provisions and adding an extra hours play to make up lost time, rather than just half an hour.

All bowlers should learn from Hazelwood look how he got all his wickets just outside off or hitting the stumps its not rocket science just bowl in good areas, no need for an entire over of short stuff that should be used as a suprise 1 ball every 4 overs or so
What percentage of Starc's deliveries would be hitting the top half of the stumps?

I'd wager it's close to 0.0%

We must have them out midway through the second session at worst for us to win I reckon.

If the Poms bat that long you'd give them another 100-120 runs say, which leaves us 180-200 in front.

We then absolutely go as hard as possible, don't enforce the follow-on if it's there, until about 320 in front or 10 overs to go for the end of the day - whichever comes last. More runs is clearly better.

Depending on how we go in the first 30 mins I'd definitely give Starc as much of a bowl as we can afford to - just to give Gaz some rough to bowl into.

Agree, but currently the hosts decide when lost overs/time are recovered in tests. I do recall prior to Sky Sports having the broadcast rights we did play early in some Ashes tests in Eng. Accordingly I suspect late sunshine is only part of the reason for not starting early...?

On Mitchell starc, I'll put my hand up and say I would have picked him in this test, but not with any great confidence and was expecting a bit more pace in the deck, which would've suited him.

I would've still placed Pattinson above Starc but with Patto's body the way it is, he was only gonna play one test and that for mine would have been the oval, which I think the selectors will go with.

There's also a line of thinking that a win here secures the series so just go with your best three bowlers and make a call on patto's body for the fifth test should we not get a win in Manchester. That's a perfectly justifiable position to take as well.

It goes without saying starc bowled poorly yesterday. You know you'll get a bit of loose stuff from him, but there was far too much yesterday from him and the threatening wicket balls didn't come near enough. He was probably lucky to bowl half a dozen balls which could have taken a wicket - not near enough for a strike bowler, and obviously none of those did get a breakthrough.

Nevertheless it's another day and there is still up to 15 English wickets for him to get amongst. I'll reserve judgement on him till after the test because I've played too much cricket and learnt too much to just flat out write off a guy with 200 test wickets to his name - doing so will make you look silly often enough. But I have no doubt he's playing for his short term career over the next two days.

Going to be interesting how we respond when stokes attacks us, for all of bigfootys whinging about Lyon the fact remains he should have had stokes out 6 times in his two series changing tons, he worried stokes our quicks have been clueless vs stokes all series.

We bowled without luck but with great control until stokes and Bairstow attacked that second new ball and it was our quicks that lost their nerve and lost their minds they do that again this game will be out of reach.

If he did I'm sure he could easily push past Harris & Wade's Test averages. They're only a handful of runs ahead of him.

This is a new low, finally can't defend his bowling so now we're talking up his batting.

There come a point where we have to accept a bowler just doesn't suit a format. It's easy to stamp the papers of Bailey, Finch etc. but for some reason Starc gets endless opportunities.

We have better options available, now is the time to move him on and let him focus on t20/ODIs.

I'll back Starc to wreak havoc at some point, getting Stokes early would help...

Skittle early, let Warner loose [ tell him it's a T20] Then wipe the floor with em.

I didn't last long enough last night to see how we went, but it seems like a concern as The Oval is the one venue I would probably have had him playing. And maybe Old Trafford as well, but only after seeing the pitch.
He was spraying them everywhere, it was infuriating to watch.

But today's another day and you never know what he's going to dish up so here's to hoping.
