No way , no how is paplet worth more than daniher.

Both are good players but the major consideration is list fit. The hypothetical trade banter suggests we won't get Daniher without giving up Paps, IMO it's too high a price to pay. We haven't had a decent small forward since McGlynn and apart from Paps the only candidate for speed and cunning is Ronke, and unfortunately for him we don't play the Hawks weekly. Daniher is of more value to Essendon. We have plenty of tall and medium forwards. We need balance. And look how it turned out the last time we bet the bank on twin towers, both on and off the field. Two years after hanging up the boots Tippet is still getting your membership dollars like a grey Hollywood star collecting residuals from a blockbuster film they frankly weren't very good in.

I don’t know. They’ll have to off load some players and may get a pick we find palatable.

Most likely we’ll send him off for our usual packet of BBQ chips.
They'll get a pick for their bloke going to Geelong (who are getting 1 or 2 picks for Kelly).
We will end up with one of those picks.
He is coming into his prime - a nailed on best 18 midfield player for them.
First rounder in low teens is fair.

I like Paps and want him to stay but if we got pick 8 (or 10?) for him we should take that and run. The club won't be planning on staying down the bottom for long. Along with our pick 5/6, that's either two top 10 picks to use in the draft in the one year we're down here, or two top 10 picks to use to land an Angus Brayshaw or Brad Crouch. Win/win scenario.
Why? The best case scenario (with I'd guess a 10% chance of occurring) is getting a player who in two years will be as good as Papley with pick 8 (10).
I'd want at least double that pick (two top ten picks) to even consider that risk. And then considering our list I'd STILL reject that deal too if he is happy to stay here.
Our team doesn't get any better swapping Papley for Brayshaw, it gets worse IMO. I wouldn't mind seeing either of Crouch or Brayshaw in - but only for at the expense of a draft pick without losing one of our best.

Ling was a huge reach at the time and already looks like a bust. Why on earth did they go for him when their mantra has always been to take the "best available"?
A(n over) reaction to our poor kicking skills I guess. Looking for a McV replacement must have been the thinking.
Just another example of why you wouldn't give ups someone like Papley for one draft pick that might well end out like this one.
Hope Ling can turn in around and at least get on the park next year. If only to see if he's got trade value at the end of it.

Why do we so quickly adopt such a glass empty position on certain players?

The glimpses I've had of Ling suggest he's something special. Not unlike Malceski in his early career when he kept suffering knee injuries.

He is the perfect player we want to keep on the list. Speedy, can cover multiple positions, put in, seems a good guy.
Ideal clubman able to come in when needed or maybe nail down a permanent spot.
Agreed. The salary cap means that no team will be full of champions (well, unless you’re the Hawks or Tigers of course) and every team will need these “lesser lights” who can play a variety of roles on an ‘as needs’ basis.

I am astounded that WC Eagles can afford Tim Kelly with all the other players they have.

Disagree. I’d take a Brayshaw over Papley. Our inside game in the midfield is tripe.

It would seem that some clubs are just great at managing their caps. That or as was so often stated with the Hawks they’ve got a long line of players just desperate to sacrifice some of their salary to help retain their teammates!

There is another option but you generally don't find out until years later.

I'd love us to go for Sam Frost. He's right in the peak of his powers and is getting better each year and we'd finally have a FB to plug in and relieve Rampe of playing on gorillas.

Despite an ACL in his second year, Mal debuted in his 3rd and was best 22 from his 4th in grand final teams

Lings played half a dozen reserves games...

Except not so much anymore I feel.

We could have Fyfe and Oliver but without a ruckman they'd be chasing guys just like Parker and Hewett are IMO.
Papley kicks goals and does heaps of other stuff too. We couldn't replace that with anyone else on our list (or available) IMO.

Two years of no games is hardly "so quickly" but in any case the "over reaction" part was in regards to him being a reach at that pick. Every single analyst was surprised and most had him at least ten picks later.
Honestly hope he comes good of course, speed and good kicking are welcome.

What were our needs at the time?
