Sliding doors and all that but I wonder what the Swans would look like today if Danniher nominated us in 2012.

My guess is it is from Shiel's salary possibly.

Shiel is on good money yes ~800k a year, but we don't have a 1 mil + player on our list, a few on 700k - 800k (Hooker Hurley Stringer etc) but majority of the list is on much less.

I think you will find our cap issues are not what they are being made out here, think you'll find its a false sense of hope. If we wanted to throw Daniher 1 mil a season it would only be circa 300k more than what hes on now.

Though in saying that i assume the swans have a lot more coin the us if it came to a bidding war.

This bit is interesting.

"The Swans worked just as hard, and came very, very close. They flew Daniher to Sydney a few times, showed him around the facilities, took him to games and invited him to the best-and-fairest night. He went out for dinner with Adam Goodes, got to know the players and listened to John Longmire outline his plans for him. The coach-to-be would drop by when he was in Melbourne, and stick around for dinner.
As tightly as his family was tied to Essendon, Joe also had strong links to Sydney. His mother’s sister is married to Tony Morwood, the Swans’ Melbourne manager; and the club’s football and welfare managers Dean Moore and Dennis Carroll are good friends of his parents. Player personnel manager Kinnear Beatson and chief executive Andrew Ireland also played a big part in pushing the Swans’ case. The Swans have always been the Danihers’ second favourite club; they have friends there, and a dog named after Brett Kirk."

"The Swans had believed they were a huge chance, but lost a little hope after Hird signed on. The Bombers landed perhaps thekey part of their future, and Daniher was ready to get started."

So James Hird was the one that swung him to the Bombers. The poor guy must be pulling his hair out now.
He'll be a Swan, make no mistake. Too many positive connections & life's too short.
Welcome to the Bloods Joe!

no one can deny his connection to swans is massive, great club with great medical staff. Would be a huge loss if we lost a healthy JD.

going into 2020 with Brown and McKernan as our tall fwd options would be an absolute disaster...

Well you didn't have Daniher in 2019 and you still made the finals.

I had to go back to 2009 to find another team that limped into the finals with a percentage below 100. It was also Essendon that year too. Even we had a better percentage than Essendon this year...

by the skin of our teeth..........and with a percentage worse than 15th place....first team time in like 10 years to make finals with a % below 100.

not a very sustainable way to play!

To be honest I think you guys paid way overs for Shiel as even in his GWS days I never rated him that highly. Very good player when his team is on top but whenever GWS played poorly Shiel was no where to be seen. He never played well when his team was playing badly.

yep no doubt we did, although if he sorts out his kicking % he would be worth it. Absolute Gun but simply cannot kick.

Smith, Daniher, Zaharakis are big losses but when i look at your list Heppell, McGrath, Shiel, Merrett, Parish that is a pretty good midfield to build upon.

I really want Daniher to announce he wants to stay at Essendon. I don't want us anywhere near that trade.

So many red flags, not just with the player himself (200cm+ injury prone key forwards - name me one in the history of the league who was an asset in the second half of his career - Paul Salmon maybe at Hawthorn in the ruck?).

Essendon always hijack the trade period by dragging out every discussion to the last 30 minutes. And I don't have any faith in our football staff that they won't end up handing over a Chris Judd level trade bounty.

There are probably 30 players in the comp that I would be happy to hand pick 4 over for, and Daniher isn't one of them. But Essendon will ask for pick 4 and another 1st round pick. If Daniher ends up getting fit, so what?! - he isn't that good anyway.

In all likelihood, we will not be a contender next year. Yes, there is a chance if all things go well we could be a lot better but the 2 biggest mistakes that supporters make is a) overrating their young talent, and b) assuming everything that went wrong in the previous year won't go wrong again.

We have to deal with plenty of imbalances going the other way, but having access to Heeney, Mills, and Blakey (not to mention the two boys in next years draft) is a massive free kick that should set us up for success in the medium term - but I think the only thing that could ruin our prospects would be impatience.

As much as I love Heeney and Mills, Blakey is the guy that I think all our planning should be done around. Making sure our list is as strong as possible when he hits his prime in a few years time. People saying on here 'how good would it be if we had cripps or martin?' ... well I think we already have one of them, he is just 19.

Potentially losing Papley and Jones only strengthens my view that we may need to take another step back before moving forward.

Take pick 4 to the draft, and any other picks we may get for jones and papley. If we happen to struggle again next year, we could end up with another early pick before the academy kids, and end up with 3 picks inside 15. Then we would be starting to assemble a GWS level of young talent. If Daniher becomes available as a free agent, then we can look at it again next year.

Oh Tom how I agree with basically every point you have made here, particularly regarding Daniher. I've never really seen what all the fuss was about - a very, very good player yes, but a great???? My feet are so firmly planted in the "Let's wait for next year" camp I can hardly walk!

Agreed, they would have been far better to have thrown the kitchen sink at Coniglio or Kelly IMO.

yep

hence why a healthy daniher is so key to our success. we built or squad around him.

If he we lose to Swans will be a big hole.

I could be swayed if the trade doesn't include pick 4/5, or our first pick next year. But Essendon will want both of them and will keep demanding it right up until the end of the trade period. Just a hard pass for me.

Do the Bomber supporters really think they will get Parker or Heeney plus a 1st round pick for Daniher?

lol no.

IF he goes to Swans we would likely ask for 2 first rounds (in typical essendon fashion) which will turn into asking for Pick 4 + 2nd Round at the death.

Not the same situation but I remember a few years ago Ted Richards saying how he could not get a game at Essendon and as a result requested a trade to Sydney (Sydney had been in contact with him) and Essendon eventually agreed but then demanded a first round draft pick and Richards said at the time he was a bit annoyed as he couldn't get a game at Essendon and yet they were demanding a first rounder for him. Richards was quite worried the deal would not go through because of Essendon's high asking price.

Yes they do.

"It will be a very interesting trade discussion, particularly after the Sydney medical assessment supports Dodoro's request for Heeney and Blakey as not being unreasonable".

Or

I’d want 4 and 8 and Florent.

They are just tripping on the Hird juice.

Anyone interested in a Nick Smith replacement?

Perhaps losing Papley can get us Laird who I think is a gun.

A small defender (even of his ability) at that price (contract and trade currency)? No thanks. You can find players of his and Nick Smith's ilk in the rookie draft if you develop them right.

and he turned into a gun defender.

we knew he was worth it!
