Beatson interview on Swan's App regarding trade period.
He mentioned not a strong draft but plenty midfielders & running half backs.
Of intetest I noted he said that we may trade our top picks if the right player became available. Interesting that he mentioned Sam Wicks had to play more midfield but he is a small forward preferably but did well as a midfielder. Not many KP players or 200cm plus ruckmen in the draft.

I get the feeling that we may very well be prepared to utilise a Jones & Papley move if it got us another big name other than Daniher to fill a need.
It's out there but I've thought all year that the one player we would make a bold move on would be Grundy as we value that ruck role so much.

The Daniher thing just may be a bonus.
Reports are that Grundy is after a 7 year deal. To me that says a team has offered him such a long term contract. He still hasn't put pen to paper even though tne Pies have an offer on tne table so he is gettable IMO.
We also know that we've done a lot of reshuffling/ preparation with our cap & list over the last few years with the Hanners & Tippo scenario & now we have the retirements of Macca, Jack, Smooch & Reg who may have been on 400K each. So at least $1.6M there. Tippo's money off the books & Hanners off from last season freed up space to cover an increase for Bud & others.
Throw in a potential trading out of Jones, that suggests to me we may have freed up some $2.4M.

So this leads me to Papley. Why would we consider moving Papley back home when he is a contracted leader of the club that had his best year?

My guess is to get something better that we need & that will elevate us instantly back into p'ship contention whilst we have the greatest forward of the modern era still with us.

So I'm really strongly feeling that Daniher to Swans may just be the side show to something bigger. We have clear a massive amount of cap space for some reason & my hope is that we are into Grundy.

Just out of curiosity what is a fair trade between Sydney and Carlton for Papley. I know he’s just recently met a clause to re-sign till 2023 but does he have to honour it. Sydney have always been very good trading players. Mitchell for 14. Pick 13 for two seconds last year to help Carlton with McGovern. Surely we’d do this deal easily if he wants to come back to Vic and Carlton.

I think 8 for papley and a late second would be fair. Or maybe you would prefer next year’s first for papley.
8 alone would get it done.

unsure where you get the info we have salary cap issues?.........can you share? There is literally zero chat about this in our folds and its not something reported on.

there's another swans poster who has been doing it on the main trade thread who refuses to provide where he got his source. Are you just repeating what they are saying?
My guess is it is from Shiel's salary possibly.

Perhaps Sydney view Menzel as Papley' s perfect replacement along with Ronke.

Factor in Hayward coming in too, he missed half of this year. Then the likes of Wicks and Hirst in the reserves. There is definitely a bunch of options from whom you could realistically expect improvement in the forward line.

I want Tom to stay, but I can certainly justify to myself that we can improve the team if he does want to go. What we would need to do would be to convert him in to an A Grade midfielder, either directly through a player swap, or bringing in a high draft pick that gets on-traded to another club for a player or allows us to use Pick 4 in a trade while keeping a presence in the first round of the draft.

Right. So I’m very drunk right now. I want us to pull a spectacular never saw it coming draft move. Fracking  those.

Get us the ruck we so desperately need. Get us a Key defender and mids that are hard arsed mofos! And I’ll take Daniher as well

Come on Swans. Make me happy!:grinning:

I've mentioned these two before but Rhys Mathison and Louis Taylor were better than anything we had out there in the reserves prelim IMO They can't get a game in Brisbane's firsts. Mathison finds the ball and draws plenty of frees. Taylor is fast and very difficult to stop his runs. They are not world beaters but tick a couple of Swans needs in a mid and pacey wing. Get them for nothing and if nothing else might win a reserves grand final. Think both are out of contract. Whilst we need the big players also need to try turn a few players on the fringe not getting games at other clubs which we have been able to do in the past for no real cost.

Please Ted tell me your a clairvoyant by profession?
Not only would this scenario make every Swans fan salivate, imagine the reaction from EVERYONE south of the border :tearsofjoy: :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:
We'd get our salary cap halved for the next ten years and the acadamy closed down- and it would almost be worth it just for the up yours value!

Let's not forget we are in the hypothetical thread so I hope you guys don't crucify me as always, for just throwing some of my thoughts out there.

In reality, we won't even get Daniher but we'll lose Jones & Papley, such is the difficulty in keeping our own & attracting other club's players without being bent over. There are my more realistic thoughts.

As I said above Jewely, just throwing out some thoughts for some discussion to liven up a boring patch while we wait.
Not intending to upset anyone.

He does seem confident that his issues are behind him, talking about being keen to head in to pre-season. Johnson was positive too. Looks like he will be on the list another year.
Very good, I know some others will disagree but I’m really looking forward to seeing him play for us next year!

AFL newsroom on Facebook says Daniher will announce he wants to be a Swan today.
Is that not one of those shitty fan pages?

EDIT: LMAO, their two rumours before that is Chris Scott getting sacked and Goldstein to the Cats (he just re-signed with the Roos)

Throw it in the trash.

EDIT2: They also announced that Worsford was getting sacked. He's since had assurances that he'll stay at Essendon next year. I'm assuming this means that he'll resign with Essendon (Daniher) at the end of today.

I really want Daniher to announce he wants to stay at Essendon. I don't want us anywhere near that trade.

So many red flags, not just with the player himself (200cm+ injury prone key forwards - name me one in the history of the league who was an asset in the second half of his career - Paul Salmon maybe at Hawthorn in the ruck?).

Essendon always hijack the trade period by dragging out every discussion to the last 30 minutes. And I don't have any faith in our football staff that they won't end up handing over a Chris Judd level trade bounty.

There are probably 30 players in the comp that I would be happy to hand pick 4 over for, and Daniher isn't one of them. But Essendon will ask for pick 4 and another 1st round pick. If Daniher ends up getting fit, so what?! - he isn't that good anyway.

In all likelihood, we will not be a contender next year. Yes, there is a chance if all things go well we could be a lot better but the 2 biggest mistakes that supporters make are a) overrating their young talent, and b) assuming everything that went wrong in the previous year won't go wrong again.

We have to deal with plenty of imbalances going the other way, but having access to Heeney, Mills, and Blakey (not to mention the two boys in next years draft) is a massive free kick that should set us up for success in the medium term - but I think the only thing that could ruin our prospects would be impatience.

As much as I love Heeney and Mills, Blakey is the guy that I think all our planning should be done around. Making sure our list is as strong as possible when he hits his prime in a few years time. People saying on here 'how good would it be if we had cripps or martin?' ... well I think we already have one of them, he is just 19.

Potentially losing Papley and Jones only strengthens my view that we may need to take another step back before moving forward.

Take pick 4 to the draft, and any other picks we may get for jones and papley. If we happen to struggle again next year, we could end up with another early pick before the academy kids, and end up with 3 picks inside 15. Then we would be starting to assemble a GWS level of young talent. If Daniher becomes available as a free agent, then we can look at it again next year.
