I guess, but I'm not a fan of big money superstar contracts. Said it before we signed Bud and I stand by it now. The group we'll have by the end of 2020, methinks there will be quite a few future stars in that lot. I could see all of Heeney, Aliir, Florent, Dawson, Blakey or Hewett being so good that we have to fork out big money for them (we already are with Heeney & Mills if the reports are anything to go by). None may be so dominant that they command a massive contract individually, but combining their value and then balancing it out over the next half a decade or so is going to be a challenge no doubt. Adding blokes on seven figure contracts doesn't help do that IMO.

Don’t necessarily disagree with that, just pointing out money would be available if we were wanting to do something like get Grundy.

Flipside of the increases on all those players is the reduction /future retirement of Grundy, McVeigh, Smith, Jack, Kennedy, Tippett and even Sinclair and Rampe. Plus salary cap increases.

You can be creative with the salary. 6 million over 6 years. 800k (2021), 1.3m (2022), 1.5m (2023), 800, 800, 800. 1m per season ave.
From 2023 we would see a salary cap reduction from the Buddy contract going by 800k. 2024 we would see a further deduction of 700k (freeing up 1.5m over the two years).. This is around the time most of your list will be at its peak.

Just saying. He is a gun, one would love to make it happen haha.

Yeah I guess if we thought a little outside the box we'd be able to fit him in with that list I mentioned. As long as he's included in that list, and not at the expense of that list, what a team we'd have.

I think he'd be even more dangerous if he was in our midfield than he is in Collingwood's. For all the hype about their midfield, they're not a strong clearance team. They're 13th in overall clearances (we are 14th), and 15th in centre clearances (we are 14th). For all of Grundy's ruck dominance, it's not showing in clearances, because their mids aren't excelling at this. Grundy leads Treloar and Pendlebury, and they are the only three Collingwood mids in the top 50 clearance players in the comp, with Beams the only other Magpie in the top 100.

We have three in the top 50 as well, in Parker, JPK & Hewett, but we also have Heeney, Jones and Florent in the top 100, all young mids coming through whose clearance numbers should only get bigger as they continue their careers. I'd say with some real confidence that we'd not only be able to close the gap on Collingwood's midfield but actually overtake them in this area if we had the ruckman they currently have.

It's all pipedream stuff anyway I think, but it is the hypotheticals thread for a reason!

Buntine from GWS dropped again. I’m not normally one for making drafting suggestions on here but this kid is seriously underrated at GWS. Sorry, underrated probably isn’t the word...unlucky? He’s behind in a very, very good back line and I think would be a tremendous asset at Sydney a la Craig Bolton maybe (off the top of my head).

Good call. Like him too. If he ends up half the player C Bolton was he'd be more than useful. Craig was the epitome of the smart, tough and rarely beaten Bloods' defender

He's also a restricted free agent. Wouldn't require a trade. I've felt him & Ellis should be 2 targets during the offseason.

The problem with RFA is the possibility of paying overs (not that it’s coming out of my pocket). If GWS match, we miss out, if they don’t then they lose him for nothing. If they trade, GWS at least get something in return.

I very much doubt Jordan is flying under the radar

You can overpay a player whether it be a RFA, trade or a resigning. Still I'd be keen on those 2, increases our defence and Lloyd, Mills & Ellis can all play midfield

Of course you can but history will probably show that RFA’s get overpaid. We’ve had a couple of them and it’s cost us big time!

Can anyone tell me about Cutler? Don't know anything about the kid

I rate him. I think he has the potential to be a Ricky Henderson type if he’s under the right system, seems to be able to run all day and has a massive boot. If we played him off the half back, he’s an instant improvement on Thurlow. If we played him in the middle, he’s an instant improvement on Clarke.

Unlucky, but he isn't the same player after his injury (ACL I'm pretty sure from memory)
