My uneducated thoughts.
We turned Neale (pick 54ish?) Into Hogan.
Lachie Weller (pick 16?) Into pick 2 (Brayshaw)
Chris Mayne compensation into BHill which could then turn into 2 × 1st round picks.
If we were player 'flippers' we would be investing super stars.
Having 3 x 1st round picks(replace Bennell, Kirsten and Ballas) plus what we get for Langdon is an absolute win as far as I can tell.
Players will always leave, its what you get back that is important.
Bhill leaves then it's time for Giro to step up. He's got the engine.

An ACL can destroy a players pace, look what it did to Palmer.

Shame if he truly is going, been a great part of the club for the last 3 years, will definitely miss him. Gotta use him to get Kelly yeah?

Lose Neale, then B. Hill with Stephen plus Langdon to top it off. Sorry but that happens, the club free-falls. Big big trouble. Can’t replace all that talent. Ross couldn’t possibly satisfy making the finals in 2020 if that happens.

We'll drop off for sure in ball movement but I refute that it is free-fall. Neale has already left and we improved on last year. Shilly never plays anyway so he doesn't count.

It's not ideal but meh, take what we can get for them and move on.

I think you need to counter that with who we've brought in.
Recruiting Hogan, Lobb, Wilson, Ryan. Recruiting Brayshaw some may say Cerra and Logue but I'm not sold on them yet.
Plus we need to consider later what we get from their trades.
Adelaide lost Tippett and Dangerfield.
Hawks have lost nearly all premiership players.
Brisbane had a huge exodus only a few years ago.
Bulldogs lost their captain then won a flag. The player that got in return was near BOG in a GF.
Players leave. It happens. It's rarely doom and gloom when they do.

D

I don’t have the faith in our drafting team you do and i’d back Gus to improve the if in the right position.

I’ve said repeatedly that 10ish for Hill is fair, to actually release him will require a lot more than “fair”

Your spot on imop....pointless talking down Angus other than he has maybe has a form lapse this year compared to last and more than likely carrying an injury and being played to nurse that somewhat, or other reason. The 2018 -21 Brownlow votes from 9 games can't be ignored as to the quality of the player. Jaeger O Meara has 19 across four out of 6 years.

If fit and okay in all areas he could pull a pick 5 in a single trade...but in a mutual trade of players such a s B Hill much of a muchness unless there are some body issues with Gus.

His lack of form is mostly from being played out of position this year.

The problem is draftees take 4 years of development.
Sharp and Stephens could easily play meaningfully next year. Both already playing league and doing well. Henry too in the forward half.

I'm not suggesting they can replace Billy and Ed, but that is really irrelevant because they are leaving whether we like it or not.

If he wants more money why not hand it over? He’s one of our top 5 players

I'd be comfortable signing him to an extension that boosts the cash, but I'd backend it so if he pulls the pin and wants to move back to Melbourne he doesn't get to pocket most of the money and then leave when the contract value gets less.

... like I suspect is happening now.

Back ending is a great idea.

Prevents poaching.

Too bad they didn’t do that with Neale instead of front loading.
