cheers for explanation.
Hi Bugs
Can you explain how we could drop to pick 5? could you elaborate on the Campbell situation? I am not across that and thought we were a lock for pick 4 unless we traded it.
I know its only 1 spot but keen for us to not drop down even one seeing we haven't had an early pick for so long.
Cheers

Looking at the teams with picks ahead of us they all have needs in the tall stocks:
Adelaide- need a replacement for Walker/ someone who can ruck well (Thil)
North- need another key forward to develop with Larkey (McDonald)
Sydney- need a mobile KPD/Athletic backmen (DGB)

In all likelihood those three will be gone in that order (I think North will bid on JUH, but will be incredibly happy to land Mcdonald/Thil if he's gone by then) which leaves us with our pick of the rest. After seeing the footage of Hollands getting into his running training just about ahead of schedule I think he's very easily our man.
I think our greatest risk of someone taking Hollands before we get the chance is Adelaide- both North and Sydney already have the core makings of a solid young midfield unit, with deeper needs in the KP stocks.

With next years draft being so full of midfield stock I actually think that we're better off grabbing a midfielder or two with our first few picks in this one- next year we're more likely to have our pick of the talls given our pick will fall 9+ (I'm predicting some nice improvement tbh)

ideally I'd love draft night to look:
pick 4: Hollands
Another first (somehow): Ford/Cox/Reid/Chapman
21: Ford/Chapman/Callow/Laurie/Perkins/Downie
Anything else: Downie

If we have a somewhat quiet trade period (finding a way to get another first) I would be frothing a draft night like this!

‘our MO involves a significant amount of life trading

I really reckon they’ll consider taking Phillips. If any club need to take the so called ‘sure thing / safe bet’ then it’s North. Unfortunately I don’t reckon they’ll bid on Campbell though.

North, for all the holes in their list, have a few young, talented mids coming through already: Simpkin, LDU, Scott and Thomas, to go with Anderson (26/27) and older big bodies in Cunnington and Ziebell (if he plays in the middle). It's almost certainly the part of the ground they are best covered for.

They'll take one of McDonald / Thilthorpe / DGB (and bid on JUH I suspect) with pick 2, and may double-down on another tall (not sure who) with pick 8. Next years draft crop at the top end is mostly midfielders by all accounts, so can see North going taller this year.

I know I'm repeating myself, but there are literally 2 key talls predicted to be in to the top 20 for 2021 at this stage....it's a draft year that will be packed with mids. This year, there's a lot of talls scattered throughout the top 15.

I don't think any club is taking a mid in the first 5 picks of 2020 unless all of McDonald, Thilthorpe and DGB are all gone.

I just don't want to take a player coming off a knee reco at pick 4.

It's somewhat of a risk, but remember Christian Petracca did his ACL in his first pre-season at the top level and missed his entire first season. You wouldn't know it looking at him now. I'm sure there are other stories also.

Two other speculative players taken at 4 were Bontempelli and Clayton Oliver.

Hollands talent at least isn't speculative.

Does anybody know how he ruptured his ACL?

Was innocuous apparently. Change of direction.

McDonald and Thilthorpe will be gone. DGB a chance to be there, but would you take him over Hollands if given the choice? I wouldn't. We're stacked in that part of the ground.

Stacked for key defenders? because that's what he is . Id take him because its rare to find good talls , mids will be there next year and they can come in and have immediate impact . If a tall is there id hope we take one get a year of development into them .

Is he a key defender? Or more of an interceptor? Hollands is a generational talent from all reports.

In fact, if we pass on Hollands for DGB, I'll be staggered.

Hes 195 cm but wouldn't even be 80 kgs skinny as rakes so 1v1 isn't his strength atm . I just feel he has the athletic attributes to be able to match it with the new generation of key forwards coming through like the kings .

I agree hollands looks fantastic and there are cases where guns have come back from early acl's like petracca and goddard but there's also alot who haven't recaptured form or unfortunately have done it again . I would be happy with either if that is who we were choosing from with just a slight preference for a kpp.

Yeah the J McGovern comparisons are compelling. To be fair, I think the Swans may take him at 3, with Campbell coming in the door.
Then we're left with Hollands, which is a no brainer.
A lot to play out yet. This is all assuming the top end picks aren't traded. And of course the Crouch compo is band 2.

With the Cats out of the picture with Cameron nominating them who is going to give Crouch a deal to secure band 1 compo. Port? Saints? Suns?

Cats were the team I was worried about.
