I was thinking last week that Geelong the bastards were going to luck out again and be able to bring in Crouch on great deal given his recent incident. Loving the fact that Gags and Satan have jumped in and snagged him on that cheaper deal. Advantageous move that instantly upgrades our midfield, keeps attention away from our young guns in the middle while not breaking the bank. Brilliant stuff.

I was thinking of a situation like that or is that considered draft tampering. I don't know

Its only draft tampering if they know about it. Hope we haven't spilled the beans.
GET OUT OF HERE GIL , THIS IS THE ST KILDA BOARD.

This is what happens when you attract and accumulate good people.

Gallagher (Macquarie Bank), Lethlean (gun AFL adminstrator), Finnis (ex-AFLPA CEO), Gubby Allan, Jarryd Roughead, Brett Ratten.

Anyway why would Crouch be a deterrent to Caldwell. A) They play opposite roles and B) Crouch makes us a better team, so if Caldwell wants to be successful then we’ve just become a lot more attractive.

Bytel 1st emergency but geez I want him in the team if we can find a way...

Absolutely wrapped with the Crouch news. Apart from a couple of posters throwing the toys out of the cot, it looks like pretty much everyone can see the obvious logic - and genuine improvement he brings to our greatest area of need.

I think all the main points around the qualities B.Crouch bring have been well covered in the last 15 pages (so I wont repeat them). But there are 2 additional points I wanted to make that haven't been bought up:

1. For those worried about his kicking, this is Brad Crouch. Not Matt Crouch. Massive difference. Not saying it is elite. But some people are reacting like we just gave 5 years to Matt. Brad is a vastly superior player and user of the ball.

2. Yes he got caught with some Columbian Marching Powder (I know nobody expects this type of behaviour from a guy in his 20s with lots of disposable income, but apparently it happens. Who knew). But that 2 week suspension also probably saved us a s**tload of coin. And in his defence, WTF else is there to do in Adelaide.

Overall it is yet another good day here Sainters. Yes it will be sad to see players like Dunstan, Ross, Lonie & Sincs join the Acres, Newnes, Bruce, Hickey crew. But at the end of the day, this move simply makes us a better team.

Excited for 2021

Just having a look at his 2019 highlight reel & for a bloke that evidently can’t kick, he does ok for me, especially his kick on his left at the 40 second moment on the reel.

Impressive. It felt bloody uncomfortable being on the same side as Tex for a few minutes though.

He's mostly been playing half forward for every game so far.

Only small stints in the middle.

thats absolutely perfect. so we could have gresham take lonies role. caldwell plays kents. billings HFF. hanners to the wing. crouch inside. steele resting fwd.

No Ryder?

The more mids we get, the less we see of guys like Lonie, Kent and Hind.

No offence to those guys, who have filled roles for us. But they are all seriously one dimensional. None of them can really go through the middle with any impact and heavily rely on others to get the ball forward for them to have any impact.

If their positions are filled by a rotation of Gresh, Billings, Steele, Hill, Hanners etc etc we're an infinitely better side

To be fair though he hasn't exactly set the world on fire in that role and looks much more comfortable when they actually do throw him on the ball.

With expected improvement though he should be able to have more of an impact across half forward as well as spend more time on ball.

Not a fan at all. Overpay anther B grader and keeps our centre square mids with decent foot skills at 1.

There are 2 kinds of clearances:

1. Clearances you get from just happening to be in a spot where the ball goes- it's not quite 100% dumb luck, (because good players position themselves well to increase their chances of getting lucky)- but most of the reason you get this clearance is because of random chance- ie the ball just finds its way to you.

2. Clearances where the ball is in a 50/50 dispute and if you don't win it, your opponent will.

If you are butchering the ball after getting clearance type 1, that isn't ideal- because pretty much anyone with a pulse could have got that clearance... so it's a bit of a waste to just hack kick it fwd.

Clearance type 2 is different though- it's not just the gain in territory you get, it's also the stopping of the opposition getting it fwd too.
If Brad Crouch wins 10 of those type 2 clearances a game, and half of them go straight down the oppositions throat- we are still way ahead.

Because we've had 5 good clearances we wouldn't likely have got without him AND he stopped the opposition from winning 5 50/50 contest clearances.
Our backline will love him doing that- even if he kicks it 40m out of the middle straight to the opposition.

That's waaay better than what happened this year when teams waltzed out of the middle and i50 over and again. (tigers game anyone?)

We haven't had a player capable of winning large numbers of clearance type 2 since Jack Steven started eating dimsims- I'm very excited we are getting our very own ballpig again.

You can't win flags without guys who regularly beat the opposition to the ball and get it going towards your goal.

sounds a bit like steele when we first started with us. he was played forward and really didnt make much impact. then he got his tackle game going and he found more and more time in the middle.

Forgotten Butler mate. Going to be much more competition for spots. Good position to be in.

Clearances get you ground position and allow you to set up the structures. Considering how efficient we were when we went forward, the more we can go forward the better!

IMO opinion, it is still too soon for most of that.

For me this is an upgrade on quality on the inside. Crouch takes Ross's center square role and rides shotgun with Steele feeding Gesh, Z.Jones, Hill, Billings etc. Ross moves into the Sincs role. Sincs out

If we want to move Billings to a permanent wing / HFF and Gresh to a more 50 / 50 split, (and even play Steele more forward) we are still AT LEAST one mid short.

For me, that is either Clark (and we find a replacement HBF), Bytel or Caldwell. Open to any of the above.

But even with Crouch, IMO we are still AT LEAST one mid short. Probably 2
